In modern society, with the changing lifestyle, demand for complex cultural spaces is rising and various cultural spaces are emerging. However, user-centered cultural space research has not yet been shown. In order to find out whether various cultural experience functions and user experience types of complex cultural spaces are being delivered properly, this study compared and analyzed the representative cultural spaces of Korea, 'Starfield Library' and 'ARC.N.BOOK'. User experience analysis tools and individual in-depth interviews were used as research methods. As a result, both spaces responded that commercial space and brand library were out of harmony and that the use of services in complex cultural spaces was inconvenient. This is interpreted as the result of the need for improvement measures in the value and usability of experience provided by the current complex cultural space and is expected to help develop the complex cultural space in the future.
In order to make an effective use of spatial resources in the city, detailed environmental plan strategies based on 'culture' are needed. An integral part of city spaces-'underground space' serves as one of the spatial resources with much effective usage potentials. Hence, 'underground space' needs cultural vitality. The purpose of this study is to propose an thorough indoor environmental plan guideline for the cultural vitality of 'underground space'. The methods used to conduct research include precedent study reviews and survey. Through this research, following conclusions are drawn. First, to promote cultural vitality at the 'underground space', it must be transformed into the cultural public place to be utilized for cultural activities by residents. Second, the 'underground space' requires 'concept of eco-friendly space for clean environment'. Third, 'safe environment' concept must be installed in the 'underground space' to promote the cultural vitality. Fourth, the 'underground space' requires 'complex/block level network plans between cultural spaces in addition to horizontal/vertical walking network between cultural environments in ground level and underground spaces. Fifth, the 'underground space' requires underground public cultural space plan through 'reasonable underground development with considerations of the facilities related to education, culture and history'. Sixth, 'public cultural space plan for various cultural spaces' and 'supply of space for cultural activities for residents and design plan for mutual culture exchange' are necessary.
This study aims to analyze the design of public libraries which act as anchors in culture-led urban regeneration. They have been built as city's symbols as well as catalysts to revitalize city centers and urban spaces since the 1990s. This study finds that the public libraries play roles in the urban development as cultural icons, multi-functional spaces, and public domain. This study examines the five examples of the libraries and finds their important design qualities as follow. First, public libraries are planned to symbolize local culture and history as cultural icons. The shapes of public libraries are expressed with sculptured cultural icons, while their facades are designed to signify cities' identities and images. Second, public libraries in culture-led urban regeneration have multi-functional spaces which provide diverse activities and experiences to visitors. The libraries often have galleries and theaters for cultural life, cafes and shops for daily uses, educational facilities, as well as public services, parking, and transport systems that connect to urban infrastructure. Third, the public libraries become the anchors of surrounding public spaces and cultural buildings. The libraries have the sequences of approach from entry plazas, transitional zones, and entrances to lobbies. Especially the transitional zones between the libraries and the cities that are covered with giant cantilevers expand the libraries' space and establish attractive urban spaces. Forth, the libraries employ nature and cityscapes in their design. The surfaces and openings of the libraries are adjusted to allow many attractive views to visitors. Fifth, the libraries have big lobby spaces which are the centers of the buildings as well as the public domain. The lobby spaces are designed as in-door spaces like out-doors with vertical and horizontal openness that allow the natural flows of light from ceilings, glass walls and vertical voids.
This comparative study between Korean and German housings aims at understanding different structural systems in the indoor and outdoor spaces, depending upon the user′s perception of the socio-cultural attributes. The analysis starts with four alternative contrary assumptions, that appear in morphological forms of dwelling; 1) linear distribution vs. areal distribution of residential districts, 2) mirror system vs. comb system in the layout of plot plans 3) organization of front vs. back outdoor spaces and 4) opening vs. closing in the indoor spaces. A clear difference is found between Korean and German samples in view of public and private relationships between indoor and outdoor spaces as well as the intermediate space. In the korean housing there always exists a symbolic and psychological territory of a certain sphere. On the other hand, outdoor space passes through various phases only to form a certain hierarchy even in a private space and, thereby, sets a boundary between private and public areas. In the case of Germany, the building itself draws a clear line between private and public outdoor spaces, and therefore the outdoor space has a "front" and "back". Thus, Germany′s private space may face a genuine public space and street, which is rare in the Korean housing. Although the layout of indoor space in the korean housing tends to be open, such an openness may be outstanding in living and dining spaces, kitchen and various accesses to rooms. In the case of Germany, such indoor spaces are usually closed to each other. Thus corridors act to separate these spaces. Such differences are analysed to be due to the different perceptions of interpersonal and socio-cultural attributes as intra-family and inter-neighbor relationships or communications.
Most of these cultural spaces are Western architecture which is completely unrelated to our traditional style. In Japan's colonial rule of Korea these Western formation flowed in and passed on by them. Therefore before the understanding of modem cultural space built in Japan's colonial rule of Korea, it's essential to study about the background of the western period in that time, architecture and trend of interior. Due to Great Depression and other reasons the economical modernism of architecture raised in this period. In this thesis, based on such background of period, cultural space has been divided into assembly, theatre and exhibition spaces. Those spaces were studied according to its expressional characteristics and brought to following conclusion from the analysis. The cultural spaces were created around 1930 due to an increase of demand when the modernism started to establish. Like other buildings cultural space expressed modernized elevation and space formation with ferroconcrete building. However until Japan's colonial period the cultural areas were not used for public but for Japanese authority class's social gatherings only. Consequently, unlike other buildings the classical elements that could express these characters were more used in cultural spaces especially in theater and exhibition areas. This distinctiveness didn't appear separately but according to type of rooms in one space. Once more, place like assembly space was expressed with modernism, special or recreation rooms where people pursue a comfort were expressed with decorative style. Also a special theater which was used for only one person was generally expressed with western style to represent the stem character such as power.

Ihis landscape design was proposed for the Remodeling for the National Theater of Korea Competition. Today, the National Theater of Korea, located in Jangchoongfong, Joong-gu, Seoul, asks plans for renovation. The landscape design for the remodeling of the theater is conducted as part of comprehensive programs for its renovation. The Government sought design proposals through a design competition in April, 2002. The authors proposed a landscape design for remodeling the National Theater of Korea and won first place in the competition. The landscape design covers the following a survey of the present status, a site analysis, a schematic design, and design, development. In the authors'design, heavens, humans, earth and nature are symbolically expressed within the site. The outdoor spaces of the National Theater of Korea are organically composed of the following low spaces : 1) a field of creation; 2) a field of recreation; 3) a field of meeting; and 4) a field of contemplation. The field of creation consists of a main entrance, spaces for public performance and plays, spaces with symbolic water features, and resting areas. The field of recreation is composed of various exhibition spaces. The field of meeting consists of traditional Korean-style gardens and an outdoor cafeteria. The field of contemplation features lawns, grasses and trees, and provides an area for pedestrian strolling. The outdoor spaces of the National Theater of Korea would produce an atmosphere suited to a cultural and artistic place. In the spaces, people would perceive a unique sense of place through various types of fountains, pergolas, columns, walls, light poles and bollards. An example of the true meaning of a cultural space and a resting place is provided in these spaces. The renovated National Theater of Korea would be a new type of theater with regional context, cultural meaning, spatial identity, various amenities with symbolic images, function and beauty.

In Modern Cities, The 'Cultural spaces or facilities' are the core of the urban activity. And it is the field of urban life which can improve the quality of life and change the human's life style. Also in Contemporary society, Cultural spaces are required to express the social and psychological activity of the city life and the diversity and function of human beings. But most of them are located in the Metropolitan area. In these days, the needs of cultural spaces and facilities in 'Medium sized-cities' are growing. And many development plans are working in practice in that cities to accede to these requirements of social, human and current of the times. They include the exhibition spaces which perform function of the field of art and culture, that have powerful and infinite potentiality of the social development. At this Point, this study suggest that 'Optimum level' of exhibition spaces as Museum and Art-gallery in Medium sized-cities. To achieve this study, two phases are proceeded as follows. First, Check the social needs of it based on theoretical inquiry of Exhibition space. Second, Focused on Medium sized-cities, through a comparison between 12 Domestic cities and 4 Japan's cities. A population of their cities is from 500,000 to 1,000,000. We can get a data for Optimum level of Exhibition space. And last, Suggest the strategies of the location and planning of Exhibition space based on Second phase.
Recently, alleys, villages and traditional market spaces have been recreated as complex cultural spaces due to urban renewal or village community policies. However, previous studies only refer to buildings such as museums and libraries in dealing with complex cultural spaces. The purpose of this study is to suggest the recreated complex cultural space as a natural convergence type and analyze its characteristics. Therefore, this study aims to reestablish the concept and type of the newly created complex cultural space. For this study, Busan Bosu-dong Bookstores Alley, Daegu Kim Gwangseok-street, Andong Traditional Market and Andong Shin-sedong Mural Village were selected as research examples. As a result of the study, the natural convergence space reflects the locality of the contents constituting the space, and the various values are convergenced. And this type of space is being reborn as an advanced case of urban regeneration and serves as a representative tourist destination in the region. As a next study of this study, we proposed social studies such as quantitative research and qualitative research.
The purposes of this study were to examine the characteristics of elements composing the cultural identity of Chinese architectural and spatial design, and to analyze the expression characteristics and influencing factors of contemporary restaurant design. With these purposes, first, this study reviewed related literature in order to find the characteristics of tangible elements observed in intangible elements and space expression characteristics forming the cultural identity of China. Second, this study conducted a case study in order to understand the expression characteristics of the design of Chinese restaurants in Shanghai and to find factors influencing the design. In order to sample the subjects of the case study, the researcher selected 18 restaurants that were recommended repeatedly in books on Chinese restaurants and tourism and major Internet sites or highly evaluated by visitors, and then choose 15 of them that were found to be fit for the purpose of the survey. According to the result of the survey, the restaurants were largely grouped by type into 10 cases of fine dining, 3 of middle-class casual dining, 1 of fast food, and 1 of luxury tea house serving traditional tea and snacks. Of these restaurants, 46.7% (7 cases) were of CM-CM-CM type, namely, using contemporary simple elements in all of external spaces, indoor spaces, and decorations, 20% (3 cases) were of CM-CM-CT type, using contemporary and simple external and indoor spaces, and traditional furniture or articles, 20% (3 cases) were of CT-CM-CT type, using traditional external spaces such as traditional buildings, contemporary simple finishing of indoor spaces, and traditional articles such as palace lanterns and traditional doors and windows, and 13.3% (2 cases) were of CT-CT-CT type, using traditional elements in their original forms in general. Through this research and survey, cultural identity showing Chinese traditions observed in the expression characteristics of restaurant spatial designs was confirmed, and it was also found that the identity was underlain by ideologies, values, lifestyles, etc. that had long accumulated through the long history of the country and exerted a great influence.
Purpose: This study suggests the multi-purposed emotional space that is one of the alternatives to reuse idle spaces in the city. Because human who is living in modern society begins pursue new contents and leisurely life all the time and live toward the period of high emotion with personal characteristics, architectural industry also need to change its planning and design to satisfy contemporary man and to adjust rapid social mobility. Method: For this study, the buildings where are located near Asia Cultural Complex (ACC) and leaved as idle spaces now that is used for important facilities are used to apply the multi-purposed emotional Space. Essential methodology and terminology were examined to estimate and construct the multi-purposed emotional space. Result: The multi-purposed emotional space provides that people aggressively request subjects to satisfy their emotional attractiveness as well as comforts and pleasures beyond the functional basic requirements in space. On the other words, it can be regarded as limited context to physical space responsive to social and environmental changes for the surrounding, and may maximize user experiences. Since emotions tend to be abstract and subjective while architectural space has pretty physical properties, this study attempts to integrate contrastive properties between emotional and architectural spaces to make a real object.
