Purpose: South Korea is rapidly changing into a multicultural society; the nursing discipline faces the need to educate its students in cultural competence to meet the health care needs of an ethnically diverse population. However, there is little evidence suggesting that nursing programs provide this education. The purpose of this study was to measure nursing students' cultural awareness in a nursing education program. Methods: Four hundred thirty-three nursing students at 4 universities in Daejeon participated in this cross-sectional descriptive study, which was held from August to September 2012. Data collection was conducted via questionnaires based on the Cultural Awareness Scale(CAS), and demographics included general and cultural characteristics. Results: The mean cultural awareness score was 4.54, which was relatively low compared to studies completed in other countries. The highest rating was in the cognitive awareness subscale, and the lowest was in the general education experiences subscale in CAS. The level of cultural awareness was significantly different in those who had experienced overseas travel. Those students also perceived a greater need for cultural education. Conclusion: The study's finding suggest the need for a transcultural nursing education program designed to enhance the level of cultural awareness in Korea's nursing students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influencing factors associated to students nurses' cultural awareness toward immigrants for marriage and foreign workers. Methods: The participants were 107 nursing students in C city in Chungnam province. The data were collected with structured questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The mean score of cultural awareness was 3.67. The degree of cultural awareness was different according to educational experience related multiculture and age. The variables predicting cultural awareness were social distance of foreign workers, emotions of immigrants for marriage and age. These factors accounted for 26% of the variance of cultural awareness in nursing students. Conclusion: The results indicate education related multiculture should be provided to nursing students to reduce the social distance between students and foreign workers and enhance positive emotions for immigrants.
This study investigated the effects of critical thinking and empathy on the cultural competence of dental hygienists and students. A total of 529 dental hygiene students were randomly sampled and included as subjects. PASW Statistics for Windows ver. 18.0 was used to obtain the following results. Among the critical thinking sub-domains, cognitive integration was the highest and the lowest. Empathic ability had the highest acceptance factor among the sub-domains. Cultural competence was the highest among the sub-domains, while cultural knowledge was the lowest. According to their general characteristics, subject age, grade, religion, and economic level influenced the cultural capacity. Cultural awareness and sensitivity were high when there were foreign visiting experiences. Cultural awareness, sensitivity, skills, and knowledge were high when subjects had experienced multicultural education (p<0.05). Cultural awareness, sensitivity, skill, experience, and knowledge were correlated with critical thinking and cultural competence, among which cultural sensitivity showed the highest correlation (p<0.001). There was a correlation between cultural awareness and sensitivity, skill, and experience among the empathy and cultural competency sub-domains (p<0.001). The factors influencing cultural awareness included intellectual integration, openness, prudence, and perspective-taking (p<0.001). The factors influencing cultural sensitivity included intellectual integration, openness, and empathic concern (p<0.001). The factors influencing cultural skill included intellectual integration, creativity, and conductivity (p<0.001). The factors influencing cultural experience included prudence, objectivity, perspective-taking, and personal distress (p<0.001). Finally, the factors influencing cultural knowledge included creativity and conductivity (p<0.001). The results indicate that dental hygiene students should be equipped with cultural competence to enhance critical thinking and empathy required by the modern society and optimized dental hygiene courses should be provided for multicultural subjects.
This study examined the aspects in elementary school students' career interest and career awareness by gender, age, and multi-cultural families/general families. The subjects were 341 elementary school students from multi-cultural families and general families. The results were as follows. First, there were significant differences in investigative, artistic, and social interests by gender. The children from multi-cultural families and general families showed no significant differences in career interest. Second, the children from general families had higher scores than those from multi-cultural families in self-awareness, occupational exploration, career attitude, and career awareness. And the girls had higher scores than boys in self-awareness, occupational exploration, and career awareness. Third, there were meaningful differences in career interest and career awareness by age. The younger children had higher scores in career interest and lower scores in career awareness. Fourth, the career interests had significant correlations with career awareness in both groups. And there were stronger correlations in general children. Fifth, the regression analyses showed that career interests had significant effects on career awareness in both groups, and there were higher effects in general children. The artistic interests in multi-cultural children and the social interest in general children had significant effects on career awareness. And the effect of multi-cultural families/general families was noticeable in occupational exploration, career attitude, and career awareness. The implication for multi-cultural career education and counseling practice are discussed based on the result of the present study.

This study examines the effect of national identity and threat awareness on the multi-cultural acceptability and whether contact theory actually work. For the analysis, this study used '2013 Korea General Social Survey' data and compared two groups divided according to whether or not they live in ethnic places using structural equation modeling. The empirical analysis shows that national identity does not have a direct effect on multi-cultural acceptability, and threat awareness has a full mediating effect between national identity and multi-cultural acceptability. In addition, the negative effect of the threat awareness on multi-cultural acceptability was greater in groups living in ethnic places. The findings suggest that multi-cultural awareness education is necessary to reduce the threat awareness toward foreigners, and that community-level programs are needed to prevent and coordinate conflicts arising from contact between foreigners and Koreans.
Although the demand and awareness of public regarding social-cultural functions of agriculture and rural areas would increase recently, the sustainability of them has continuously decreased. To derive policy directions for improvements of social-cultural functions of agriculture and rural areas, This study analyzed willingness to pay for social-cultural functions of agriculture and rural areas and its determinants by uisng contigent valuation method. The results show that the willingness to pay for social-cultural functions of agriculture and rural areas is positively affected by awareness of the importance of agriculture, interest in problems regarding agriculture in Korea, awareness of social functions of agriculture, and experience in rural life. These results would imply that policies for the improvement of public awareness and experiences increase the value of social-cultural functions of agriculture and rural areas. In addition, the results imply that more diverse education programs and activities are required in order to change awareness of future generations in response to decreases in population having experiences in agriculture and rural life due to urbanization. Lastly, the results show that the average willingness to pay for social-cultural functions of agriculture and rural areas is about 35,600 won, and total willingness to pay for social-cultural functions of agriculture and rural areas is about 998.3 billion won. This is much larger than the government budget on enhancement of social-cultural functions of agriculture and rural areas in 2019. This difference between government budget and the total willingness to pay implies that Korean government would be required more positive policies to maintain and enhance social-cultural functions of agriculture and rural areas.

This study was a descriptive research that attempted to provide the basis for improving cultural competence by identifying the effect of multicultural awareness and cultural empathy on the cultural competence of nursing students. The subjects were nursing students from grades 1 to 4 who were enrolled in two nursing colleges in Gwangju and Chonnam. The data were collected from September to December 2018. The 201 data collected were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis with SPSS 25.0 for windows. Multicultural awareness(r=.451, p<.01) and cultural empathy(r=.582, p<.01) had high positive correlations with cultural competence. The factors that affected the cultural competence were cultural empathy(β=.422, p<.001) and multicultural awareness(β=.222, p<.001) order. The explanatory power of these factors was 40.5%. These findings suggest that in order to promote the cultural competence of nursing students, strategies to promote multicultural awareness and cultural empathy should be developed, and these strategies should focus more on cultural empathy than on multicultural awareness.
The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of self-efficacy moderated by social support in the influence of local children's center cultural program commitment on career awareness and development of children and adolescents using Local Children Centers' Services. For this purpose, the questionnaires of local children's center cultural program commitment, career awareness and development, social support, and self-efficacy was conducted to 190 elementary school students in the 3rd grade and middle and high school in 22 children's centers in N city. The statistical packages were SPSS PC+ 25.0 and SPSS MACRO. The main results are as follows: First, cultural program commitment had positive correlation with self-efficacy, social support, career awareness and career development. Also, self-efficacy had a positive correlation with social support, career awareness and career development, and social support had a positive correlation with career awareness and career development. Second, the hypothesis model was supported that cultural program commitment positively affects career awareness mediated by self-efficacy moderated by social support. In other words, the more they participated and commited in cultural programs, the more self-efficacy increased leading to more career awareness. Also, the more social support was felt, the more the positive influence of cultural program commitment on self-efficacy increased. The hypothesis model was supported that cultural program commitment positively affects career development mediated by self-efficacy moderated by social support. To resolve the problem that multicultural people in Korea suffer from difficulties especially with prejudice and discrimination, it is necessary to raise the cultural diversity in communities in Korea through cultivating multicultural awareness among non-multicultural people. In this vein, public libraries, as cultural exchange institutes, can affect multicultural awareness of the people. This study investigated how characteristics of public libraries and their local communities are related to the users' multicultural awareness. The study found that multicultural awareness of library users was significantly influenced by the characteristics of public libraries but not by the characteristics of communities. It is suggested that public libraries should consider cultural diversity on overall library services for their general users to support their multicultural awareness.

The purpose of this study is to compare the working memory and the phonological awareness between Children with multi-cultural families and general families. The research subjects were 15 multi-cultural and 15 general primary school students who were attending 1st-3rd grade in D city. Working memory tested K-TTFC-2 by standardized tool. Phonological awareness abilities was considering the age of the subjects, tested phoneme awareness. Data process was conducted by t -test and frequency test in SPSS program. The results were as follows. First, working memory comparison of both groups showed significant differences. Especially had significant difference in chapter 1, chapter 4. Second, comparison of phonological awareness between both groups showed significant statistic differences. Third, the Phonological awareness comparison of both groups showed that there are differences in sound matching(word medial coda), substituting middle sound in monosyllabic words, phoneme switching. This research result is considered that can be used as the fundamental data for the development of the therapy data considering the working memory and the phonological awareness of children with multi-cultural families.
