  • The purpose of this study was to design a development frame for multicultural science program and develop a corresponding program using the frame. This study organized a development frame to design a multicultural science education program based on the culturally responsive teaching theory. This development frame consisted of the elements of purpose, teaching examples, teaching and learning methods, and assessment. This program consisted of the guideline for class teaching courses, reading materials, student worksheet, and teachers' reference materials. Based on this development frame, a multicultural science education program was developed, which was comprised of seven activities for elementary and middle school students. Each activity of the program included the concept and inquiry related to science education. In particular, by connecting the concept of science with the cultural characteristics of various countries, the activity made students aware of cultural diversity and the commonness of science principles. Compared to other subjects, the science education field has not actively undertaken studies on multicultural education. In term of dealing with universal principles, science education is suitable for making students aware of commonness. Accordingly, this gives rise to the need to draw cultural characteristics based on basic studies such as the analysis of science textbooks in various countries and develop culturally responsive programs utilizing the outcomes.

  • Purpose: South Korea is rapidly changing into a multicultural society; the nursing discipline faces the need to educate its students in cultural competence to meet the health care needs of an ethnically diverse population. However, there is little evidence suggesting that nursing programs provide this education. The purpose of this study was to measure nursing students' cultural awareness in a nursing education program. Methods: Four hundred thirty-three nursing students at 4 universities in Daejeon participated in this cross-sectional descriptive study, which was held from August to September 2012. Data collection was conducted via questionnaires based on the Cultural Awareness Scale(CAS), and demographics included general and cultural characteristics. Results: The mean cultural awareness score was 4.54, which was relatively low compared to studies completed in other countries. The highest rating was in the cognitive awareness subscale, and the lowest was in the general education experiences subscale in CAS. The level of cultural awareness was significantly different in those who had experienced overseas travel. Those students also perceived a greater need for cultural education. Conclusion: The study's finding suggest the need for a transcultural nursing education program designed to enhance the level of cultural awareness in Korea's nursing students.

The primary objective of this study was to offer a suitable education program and evaluation criteria for the program; the research has been done through person-to person interviews with 53 subjects using a series of questionnaires composed of 8 five-point Likert-Scaled items. As for the process of the interview, the subjects were asked about their satisfaction with each program item twice in order to comparetheir impressions before and after program participation. The satisfaction scores were analyzed using frequency distribution. In addition, the program effects were also evaluated by coordinators and developers from their subjective comments through periodical evaluation meetings. From the results, it is observed that art education programs are beneficial for improving female immigrants' emotionaland cultural integration. In addition, experts determined that the programs were helpful for improving their human relationship and acculturization in Korea. South Korean society faces various difficulties since it has not prepared for the stable settlement of families. Therefore, it is necessary to initiate marital education for the settlement of multi-cultural families in a healthy and democratic way. This researcher has developed a marital education program for multi-cultural families. To reflect the special characteristics, this work required the investigation of multi-cultural families in Gyeongsangbuk-do. The purpose of this work is to improve conjugal relations among multi-cultural families in a formative period of family relations to help those families to settle down early. The program consisted of four steps and 12 sessions. It featured an increase in application flexibility to an actual site by session, and includes a worksheet applicable to an actual site to understand the absence of communication and cultural differences in multi-cultural families during a formative period of family relations. In so doing, it was designed to easily perform nonverbal education. This work is expected to contribute to an improvement in conjugal relations of multi-cultural families in a formative period of family relations and help those families to settle down in a stable way.

  • Recently there are growing needs and demand to enhance 'Unity of knowledge' as the concept of "Creating new value through integration and convergence" is developing rapidly in many different areas in the society. This also has significant implication to education. Especially, it requires paradigm shift in terms of required capabilities and qualifications for the students with science major. To accommodate this trend, Natural Sciences and Engineering's College has been increasing convergence education which focus on cultivating creative and cooperative learning capabilities as well as acquiring fundamental knowledge of individual majors. However, convergence education developed and implemented by Sciences college or liberal education so far has been mechanical combination of knowledge from different academic fields - not effectively integrated and interdisciplinary education. Given this situation, this research is to develop and propose a "convergence education program based on the development of scientific and cultural contents" as an education tool to enhance capabilities to apply and re-create integrated knowledge as well as acquire and learn existing knowledge. Education program developed in this research aims to achieve two different and sequential capabilities. First is to understand 'Science and Technology' and 'Cultural Archetype' which would be essential and useful to create cultural contents. Second is to develop capabilities to convert this understanding into cultural contents - a storytelling capability. This education program is differentiated in that it defines cultural contents as a medium to converge and integrate science and technology and humanities. By leveraging the concept of cultural content and storytelling, this education program would be able to overcome restrictions of existing interdisciplinary approach. Also, this program would encourage students to try in-depth research and new applications, and develop logical and creative thinking.

Results: After receiving the multicultural education program, the levels of cultural competence and self-efficacy in the experimental group were higher than in the control group. The level of empathy increased slightly in the experimental group while it decreased in the control group. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that multicultural education is effective in raising the level of cultural competence and self-efficacy in nursing students. Thus, there is a need for continuous effort to integrate multicultural education programs in the nursing curriculum. Repeated study to test effects of these multicultural education programs should be also necessary.

  • In modern society, cultural heritage has played a role in constituting national identity. The Cultural Heritage Education Project started in the 2000s by the Cultural Heritage Administration was also aware of the issue of sustainable development and cultural diversity as major cultural issues at the time. However, the main purpose of previous cultural heritage education was to foster national identity. The Cultural Heritage Administration has executed cultural heritage education programs since 2006. The education program of the cultural heritage teacher visiting the school, the project to designate a cultural heritage school, and an education program to experience cultural heritage at an archaeological site were carried out. In the 2010s, the theme of cultural rights and enjoyment of cultural heritage in life was raised as an important issue. Cultural heritage education had to accept the 'new meaning of cultural heritage', 'cultural rights', and 'learnercentered education'. In this context, the local cultural heritage education project started. The region is a space where various identities are reconstructed. However, local cultural heritage education itself cannot realize cultural heritage enjoyment in life. Therefore, it is necessary to seek cultural heritage in life through the various efforts of local cultural heritage education.
