  • Cu matrix composites reinforced with chopped carbon fiber (CF), which is cost effective and can be well dispersed, are fabricated using electroless plating and hot pressing, and the effects of content and alignment of CF on the thermal properties of CF/Cu composites are studied. Thermal conductivity of CF/Cu composite increases with CF content in the in-plane direction, but it decreases above 10% CF; this is due to reduction of thermal diffusivity related with phonon scattering by agglomeration of CF. The coefficient of thermal expansion decreases in the in-plane direction and increases in the through-plane direction as the CF content increases. This is because the coefficient of thermal expansion of the long axis of CF is smaller than that of the Cu matrix, and the coefficient of thermal expansion of its short axis is larger than that of the Cu matrix. The thermal conductivity is greatly influenced by the agglomeration of CF in the CF/Cu composite, whereas the coefficient of thermal expansion is more influenced by the alignment of CF than the aggregation of CF.

  • Bulk metallic glass (BMG) composites combining a $Cu_{54}Ni_6Zr_{22}Ti_{18}$ matrix with brass powders or $Zr_{62}A_{l8}Ni_{13}Cu_{17}$ metallic glass powders were fabricated by spark plasma sintering. The brass powders and Zr-based metallic glass powders added for the enhancement of plasticity are well distributed homogeneously in the Cu-based metallic glass matrix after consolidation. The BMG composites show macroscopic plasticity after yielding, and the plastic strain increased to around 2% without a decrease in strength for the composite material containing 20 vol% Zr-based amorphous powders. The proper combination of strength and plasticity in the BMG composites was obtained by introducing a second phase in the metallic glass matrix.

  • The effect of solidification condition and vibration on structure refinement was investigatedfor unidirectionally solidified $AI-CuAI_{2}$ eutectic composites. Eutectic composites were unidirectionally solidifiedunder vibration with variation of growth rates (R) and thermal gradient((G), $32^{\circ}C$/cm, and 35$^{\circ}C$/cm. The lamellar structure was varied according to growth condition(G/R ratio). For the structure refinementthe effect of G/R was found out to be greater rather than that of vibration. The interlamellarspacing(l) in this materials was varied with the growth rates(R) by "$\lambda^{2}R$=Constant" relationshipquot; relationship

  • The reduction behavior of $Al_{2}O_3/CuO$ powder mixtures, prepared from $Al_{2}O_3/CuO$ or $Al_{2}O_3/Cu-nitrate$, was investigated by using thermogravimetry and hygrometry. The powder characteristics were examined by BET, XRD and TEM. Also, the influence of powder characteristics on the microstructure and properties of hot-pressed composites was analyzed. The formation mechanism of nano-sized Cu dispersions was explained based on the powder characteristics and reduction kinetics of oxide powders. In addition, the dependence of the microstructure and mechanical properties of hot-pressed composites on powder characteristics is discussed in terms of the initial size and distribution of Cu particles. The practical implication of these results is that an optimum processing condition for the design of homogeneous microstructure and required properties can be established.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been the subject of intensive studies for applications in the fields of nano technologies in recent years due to their superior mechanical, electric, optical and electronic properties. Because of their exceptionally small diameters (${\appros}\;several\;nm$) as well as their high Young's modulus (${\appros}1\;TPa$), tensile strength (${\appros}\;200\;GPa$) and high elongation (10-30%) in addition to a high chemical stability, CNTs are attractive reinforcement materials for light weight and high strength metal matrix composites. Although extensive researches have been performed on the electrical, mechanical and functional properties of CNTs, there are not many successful results on the mechanical properties of CNT dispersed nanocomposites. In this paper, we applied equal channel angular pressing for consolidation of CNT/Cu powder mixtures. We also investigated the hardness and microstructures of CNT/Cu nanocomposites used experimental for metal matrix composites.

  • The wear behavior and the mechanical property of Cu-$TiB_2$ composites were examined. Cu-$TiB_2$ composites were fabricated by hot extrusion and cold drawing with $TiB_2$ contents(1$\∼$5vol.$\%$) and the size of $TiB_2$ particles(10$\mu$m and 20$\mu$m). The pin-an-disk wear test was carried out under dry sliding wear conditions which loads varied with from 20N to 100N. At the time, counterpart wear material used SM45C. The experimental results showed that the friction coefficient and wear rate decreased with increasing the $TiB_2$ contents and decreasing the size of $TiB_2$ particle. Also, the depth of plastically deformed zone decreased with increasing the $TiB_2$ contents and decreasing the size of $TiB_2$ particle.

  • Effects of liquid phase and reinforcing particle morphology on the sintering of Al-6 wt%Cu-10 vol% $Al_2O_3$ or SiC particles were studied in regards to densification, structure and transverse rupture properties. The Al-Cu liquid phase penetrated the boundaries between the aluminum matrix powders and the interfaces with reinforcing particles as well, indicating a good wettability to the powders. This enhanced the densification during sintering and the resulting strength and ductility. Since most of the copper added, however, was dissolved in the liquid phase and formed a brittle $CuAl_2$ phase upon cooling rather than alloyed with the aluminum matrix, the strengthening effect by the copper was not fully realized. Reinforcing particles of agglomerate type were found less suitable for the liquid phase sintering than solid type particles. $Al_2O_3$ and SiC particles protluced little difference on the sintering behavior but their size had a large effect. Repressing of the sintered composites increased density and bending properties but caused debonding at the matrix-particle interfaces and also fracturing of the particles.

  • Composites comprising various volume fractions of crystalline nickel and bulk amorphous (BA) were produced by means of electroless coating of nickel on BA powder of $Cu_{54}Ni_6Zr_{22}Ti_{18}$ and subsequent spark plasma sintering (SPS) of coated BA powder. The flow curves of composites at various temperatures in the supercooled liquid region were determined by the uniaxial compression test with various strain rates. During compression at $450^{\circ}C$ with $\dot{\varepsilon}=2\times10^{-3}$, the monolithic BA sample and crystalline-BA composites displayed the superplastic deformation with $\varepsilon>1.4$. At temperatures above $460^{\circ}C$, the stress-strain curve of the monolithic BA sample depicted a sharp peak stress and a fellowing stress drop due to cracking, while those of the crystalline-BA composites displayed work-hardening up to the imposed strain. FEM analysis indicated that a fairly homogeneous strain state prevailed throughout the composite, while a higher level of stress was obtained in a harder BA.

  • In this study, microstructure and mechanical properties and electrical conductivities of in situ Cu-Fe-Xi(Xi=Ag, Cr or Co) alloy wires obtained by cold drawing combined with intermediate heat treatments have investigated. During cold working the primary and secondary dendrite arms are aligned along the drawing direction and elongated into filaments after deformation processing. The addition of Ag was found to be more effective in reducing the microstructural scale at the given draw ratio than that of Co or Cr throughout the drawing processing. The ultimate tensile strength and the conductivity of the Cu-Fe based composites containing Ag were higher than those of Cu-Fe composites containing Co or Cr. The good mechanical and electrical properties of Cu-Fe-Ag wires may be associated with the more uniform distribution of the finer filaments in the wires containing silver. The strength of Cu-Fe-Xi composites is dependent on the spacing of the Fe filaments in accord with a Hall-Petch relationship. The fracture surfaces of all the specimens showed ductile-type fracture and iron filaments occasionally observed on the fracture surfaces.
