Physicochemical properties of native and acid-modified Job's tears (Coix lachryma-jobi L.) starches were investigated. Starch extracted from Job's tears was treated with 2.2 N hydrochloric acid for different length of time (3, 6, 12, and 18 hr). The hydrolysis pattern of starches with the acid proceeded rapidly up to 12 hr and then the approached constant values. The swelling power of acid-modified starches measured at all temperatures was lower than that of its native counterparts and the water solubility index increased as temperature and hydrolysis time increased. Rapid visco analyzer viscograms of acid-modified starches demonstrated a very low viscosity as compared with that of native starch. However, Xray diffraction did not show any significant alteration in the crystallinity after acid-modification.

Sodium cellulose carbonate (CC-Na) dissolved in $8.5\;wt\%$ NaOH/ZnO (100/2-3, w/w) aqueous solution was spun into some acidic coagulant systems. Diameter of regenerated cellulose fibers obtained was in the range of $15-50\;{\mu}m$. Serrated or circular cross sectional views were obtained by controlling salt concentration or acidity in the acid/salt/water coagulant systems. Velocity ratio of take-up to spinning was controlled up to 4/1 with increasing spinning velocity from 5 to 40 m/min. Skin structure of was developed at lower acidity or higher concentration of coagulants. Fineness, tenacity and elongation of the regenerated cellulose fibers were in the range of 1.5-27 denier, 1.2-2.2 g/d, and $8-11.3\;\%$, respectively. All of CC-Na and cellulose fibers spun from CC-Na exhibited cellulose II crystalline structure. Crystallinity index was increased with increasing take-up speed.
Benzodithiophene based organic semiconducting polymer was designed and synthesized by stille coupling reaction. The structure of polymer was confirmed by NMR and IR. The weight average molecular weight ($M_w$) of polymer was 8,400 using GPC with polydispersity index of 1.4. The thermal, optical and electrochemical properties of polymer were characterized by TGA and DSC, UV-vis absorption and cyclic voltammetry. OTFT device using PBDT-10 exhibited the mobility of $7.2{\times}10^{-5}\;cm^2\;V^{-1}\;s^{-1}$ and $I_{on}/I_{off}$ of $2.41{\times}10^3$. The film morphology and crystallinity of PBDT-10, was studied using AFM and XRD.
Novel ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/zirconia composites were previously prepared by the in situ polymerization of ethylene using a Ti-based Ziegler-Natta catalyst supported on to the surface of zirconia, as a bearing material for artificial joints. Tribological tests revealed that a uniform dispersion of zirconia in UHMWPE markedly increased the wear resistance. The effects of zirconia content on the oxidation behavior of the ${\gamma}$-ray-treated UHMWPE/zirconia composite surfaces were examined. The oxidation index that estimates the oxidation degree as the content of total carbonyl compounds was monitored using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance. The changes in the surface composition due to the oxidation were confirmed by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. The extent of oxidation decreased with increasing zirconia content, which was attributed to the increased crystallinity as well as the decreased polymer portion of the UHMWPE/zirconia composites.
Physicochemical properties of waxy maize flours prepared by hydrothermal and enzymatic treatments were evaluated. Waxy maize flours were hydrothermally treated using heat-moisture treatment (HMT) and annealing (ANN) and enzymatically treated using commercial enzymes (cellulase, proteinase, and pectinase). The HMT-modified waxy maize flours had low water absorption index (WAI), melting enthalpy, viscosity, and crystallinity. However, ANN-modified and enzymatically modified waxy maize flours had high WAI, melting enthalpy, and viscosity. X-ray diffraction analysis of ANN-modified and enzymatically modified waxy maize flours revealed a typical A-type pattern and displayed sharper crystalline peaks than those observed for the control groups (native waxy maize flours). In contrast, the crystallinity of HMT-modified waxy maize flours were decreased by hydrothermal treatment.
We have investigated the combined pretreatment of electron beam irradiation (EBI) and water steam as a kenaf core pretreatment process. After each sample was exposed to electron beam dose ranging from 50 to 1,000 kGy, the irradiated sample was treated by water steam using an autoclave for 5-h at $120^{\circ}C$. The pretreated samples were characterized using FTIR-ATR and XRD. FTIR spectra and XRD analysis of nonpretreated and pretreated samples confirm that crystallinity changes were observed before and after the pretreatment. The crystallinity index (CrI) was increased from 50.6% for nonpretreated sample 55.0% for 500 kGy exposed sample. And then, we analyzed sugar yield that is the amount of produced mono-saccharides in pretreated sample by enzymatic hydrolysis; an enzyme activity rate was 70 FPU/mL and 40 CBU/mL, and the loading time was 24, 48 and 72-h. The highest sugar yield was 83.9% at 500 kGy after 72-h for enzymatic hydrolysis. The sugar yield of enzymatic hydrolysis for pretreatment samples was increased as doses are subsequently changed to 100, 200 and 300 kGy, allowing to give 50.8%, 58.6% and 67.9%, respectively.

CaF2 single crystal has a large band gap (12 eV), and it is used for optical windows, prisms, and lenses due to its excellent transmittance in a wide wavelength range and low refractive index. Moreover, it is expected to be one of the materials for ultraviolet transmissive laser optical components. CaF2 belongs to the fluoride compounds and has a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure with three sub-lattices. The representative method for CaF2 single crystal growth is Czochralski, which method has the advantages of high production efficiency and the ability to make large crystals. In this study, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray rocking curves (XRC) measurement, and chemical etching were performed to analyze the crystallinity and defect density of the CaF2 single crystals, grown by the Czochralski method. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy systems were used to investigate the optical properties of the CaF2 crystal. The provability of various applications, including UV application, was systematically investigated with various analysis results.

The CaF2 single crystal has notable characteristics such as a large band gap (12 eV), excellent transparency over a wide wavelength range, low refractive index and dispersion. Due to these outstanding properties, CaF2 single crystal has considered as a promising material for short-wavelength light sources in recent lithography processes. However, there is an inherent birefringence of the material at 157 nm and the resulting aberration can be compensated for through the combination of the (100) plane and the (111) plane. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the characteristics according to the plane. In this study, we analyzed crystallinity, optical properties of commercial CaF2 single crystal wafers grown by the Czochralski method. In particular, through chemical etching under various conditions, it was confirmed that the shape of etch pits appears differently depending on the plane and the shape and array of specific etch pits affected by dislocations and defects were examined.
Regenerated composite fibers are prepared from solution(styela clava tunics /poly vinyl alchol) using N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide(NMMO)/water(87/13)(wt/wt) as a solvent by dry-wet spinning. The chemical cellulose (94%, ${\alpha}$-cellulose content) used for this study is extracted from styela clava tunics (SCT, Midduck), which are treated in chemical process and mechanical grinding. The structure and physical properties of regenerated composite fibers were investigated through IR-spetra, DSC, TGA and SEM. The optimal blend ratio of SCT/PVA for spinning solution was 70/30 and the total weight was 4% concentrations in NMMO/water solvent system. The fiber density, moisture contents and the degree of swelling were $1.5(g/cm^3)$ 10.2(%) and 365(%), respectively. The crystallinity index of composite fibers are decreased as the PVA contents increased. Thermal decomposition of composite fibers took place in two stages at around $250^{\circ}C$ and $550^{\circ}C$. The best thermal stability was obtained with 30% PVA contents.
To investigate the properties of PET films, PET films were extruded at various temperature above $T_m$ and quenched at $18^{\circ}C$ for amorphous sheet, and stretched along a direction defined as the machine direction (MD) with a transverse direction (TD) above $T_g$ at various stretching ratios and then annealed at various temperatures produced by SKC PET line. Thermal shrinkage of MD and TD increased with decreasing annealing temperature and extruding temperature, and increasing stretching ratio. The degree of crystallinity, density, heat of fusion (${\Delta}H$) and pre-melting point ($T_m'$) increased with increasing annealing temperature and extruding temperature. Number average molecular weight ($M_n$) and intrinsic viscosity decreased with increasing extruding temperature. Tensile strength and modulus increased with increasing stretching ratio, however decreased with increasing annealing temperature. Reflective index of both stretching and thickness direction increased with increasing stretching ratio and annealing temperature.
