  • The adsorption kinetics of ${\beta}$-casein on a hydrophobic surface has been studied by means of the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). The self assembled monolayer of 1-octadecanethiol on a gold coated quartz crystal was used as a hydrophobic surface for adsorption. The adsorption kinetics was monitored in different solution conditions. Formation of monolayer is observed in most cases. At high concentration of protein, micelle formation which is interrupted by high ionic strength of solution is observed. Casein binding cations such as $Ca^{2+},\;Ba^{2+}\;and\;Al^{3+}$ increase the hydrophobicity of the protein and the multiple layer adsorption occurs. The strong and weak points of the QCM method in the study of protein adsorption are discussed.

  • Carbon nanotilaments (CNFs) could be synthesized on nickel catalyst layer-deposited silicon oxide substrate using $C_2H_2$ and$H_2$ as source gases under thermal chemical vapor deposition system. By the incorporation of $SF_6$ as a cyclic modulation manner, the geometries of carbon coils-related materials, such as nano-sized coil and wave-like nano-sized coil could be observed on the substrate. The characteristics (formation density and morphology) of as-grown CNFs with or without $SF_6$ incorporation were investigated. Diameter size reduction for the individual CNFs-related shape and the enhancement of the formation density of CNFs-related material could be achieved by the incorporation of $SF_6$ as a cyclic modulation manner. The cause for these results was discussed in association with the slightly increased etching ability by $SF_6$ addition and the sulfur role in SF 6 for the geometry change.

  • MgFe2O4 formation, grain growth in Fe2O3, Fe solid-solution limit in MgO for MgO-Fe2O3 mixture were studied by means of investigating the distribution of phases and compositions in reaction area between MgO and Fe2O3. The reaction area at equlibrium was composed with MgO-FexO matrix and MgFe2O4 precipitation, MgFe2O4 was formed by precipitating from MgO-FexO matrix dependent on oxygen partial pressure. Fe contents was exponentially decreased with diffusion distance in MgO single crystal, and thus Fe solid-solution limitation in MgO was about 4mol%. The grain growth rate in Fe2O3 base was increased with Mg contents diffused from MgO single crystal.

  • Directional solidification experiments were carried out at $1-300\;{\mu}m/sec$ solidification rates in the single crystal superalloy, CMSX 10. The solid/liquid interface morphology changed from planar to dendritic, and the dendrite spacing became finer as the solidification rate increased. The pool size of the ${\gamma}/{\gamma}'$ eutectic, formed between dendrites, reduced as the solidification rate increased. The phase formation temperatures, such as the solidus, liquidus and eutectic, were estimated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis. The morphology of the ${\gamma}/{\gamma}'$ phase, known to be eutectic, showed ${\gamma}'$ cells with a $\gamma$ intercellular network, and this ${\gamma}/{\gamma}'$ was composed of coarse and fine ${\gamma}/{\gamma}'$ regions. In this study, it is suggested that the ${\gamma}/{\gamma}'$ phase was a coupled peritectic. The solidification procedure of the ${\gamma}/{\gamma}'$ between dendrites is also discussed.

  • 6H-SiC bulk crystals were grown by sublimation method with different conditions in term of gaseous pressures ad source temperatures. In order to optimize the growth rate, pressure at growth period and source and substrate temperatures were investigated as experimental variables. the results were compared with each other and finally the optimum growth conditions were discussed. Furthermore the relation of the growth steps and defects formation was evaluates in the point of reducing the micropipes. Subsequently the growth steps and defects formation was evaluated in the point of reducing the micropipes. Subsequently the growth steps were observed leading to the lower step height with the lower growth rate.

  • In a 200 mm Cz-Si crystal, a macroscopic fluctuation in pulling rate was intentionally introduced then the variations of the pulling rate and the formation behaviors of grow-in defects were compared. The diameters of the OSF-ring and the FPD area were affected by the fluctuation in the region above 1100℃. The COP density depended on the diameter of the OSF-ring. ΔOi and BMD were affected by the fluctuation in the region near 1000Δ. As the result, when a macroscopic fluctuation in pulling rate is introduced, the quality of crystal in the region of 150 mm from the growth interface should be reviewed carefully because it can be affected by the fluctuation.

  • This paper described the study of a sphene-pink pigment based on $Cr_2O_3-SnO_2-CaO-SiO_2$ system exhibits stable pink-red color at high temperature. This study is focused on the optimization of the synthesis parameter such as temperature and holding time for the formation the Malayaite crystal. Malayaite crystal is sensitively influenced by the synthesizing temperature, maintaining time and contents of substituting chromium. The crystal phases formed at different temperatures exhibits various color. The optimum temperature is suggested at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 2 h and substituting contents of Cr for Sn is 0.01 mole. The maximum substituting contents is 0.02 mole based on analysis results by XRD, FT-IR, SEM and UV-vis.

  • Oleogels may be defined as lipophilic liquid and solid mixtures. The solid lipid materials (oleogelators) with less than 10 wt.% can entrap bulk liquid oil by ways of the formation of network of oleogelators in the bulk oil. The oelogelators can be grouped into two: self-assembly system and crystal particles system. This article reviewed recent work on the formation of oleogels using various types of oleogelators. The fundamental aspects of the formation of lipid network are discussed with a special emphasis on crystal particle based oleogels. The potential applications of oleogels for cosmetics are also described.

  • We investigated the effect of hydrogen ion beam on the formation of DLC thin film, which is deposited on the Si substrate with negative carbon ion by $Cs^+$ ion sputtering and positive hydrogen ion by Kauffmann type ion source. The amount of hydrogen in the DLC films increased as increasing hydrogen gas flow rate from 0 sccm to 12 sccm. As increasing hydrogen flow rate, $sp^2$bonding structure increased. The reason is that the hydrogen ions have relatively high energy, although total amount of hydrogen is very small compared with that of CVD process. These results suggest that the physical energy transfer plays a dominant role on the formation of DLC film.

  • In this study, the effects of thermodynamic hydrate inhibitors on hydrate formation and dissociation behaviors were identified. The nucleation and growth of CP hydrate in the presence of methanol were monitored by optical microscope. Cyclopentane was used to demonstrate the oil phase in the pipeline in this study. Hydrate morphology, required time for hydrate formation, hydrate dissociation temperature were also identified by experiments. With the addition of methanol in water solution, the hydrate nucleation as well as hydrate growth were delayed. Moreover, hydrate morphology was also varied with the addition of methanol. Hydrate formation and dissociation temperature also decrease as the concentration of methanol increases.
