  • It is reported that the spectral loss of photonic crystal fiber (PCF) having a large hole-to-hole distance (~ 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) is sensitive to micro- and macrobending when compared with the conventional single-mode fiber. In this paper, we will present the measurement result of the macro- and microbending characteristics of fabricated PCF with large hole-to-hole distance (> 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) . For the macrobending experiment, the fiber was simply wound around a circular structure with variable diameter that could be reduced to a few centimeters. For the microbending case, regularly spaced silica rods were attached on a slide glass and pressed against the fiber by loading a stack of metal plates of known weight on the glass. The transmission loss spectrum shows a rather flat response to the to microbending, and this makes the PCF a good candidate for a wideband variable optical attenuator.

  • The $(LaS)_xCrS_2(x \approx 1.20$) of the incommensurate misfit layer was systhesized from reactant mixture of$La_S_3$,Cr and S at 1273K. Powder X-ray diffration of $(LaS)_xCrS_2(x \approx 1.20$) was indexed as a complex structure consisted with a monoclinic LaS-sublattice, a triclinic $CrS_{2}$-sublattice and their superlattice. The temperature dependence of sublattice dimension was investigated by the X-ray diffraction analysis at low temperature. The magnetic susceptibility of $(LaS)_xCrS_2(x \approx 1.20$) was measured between 77K and room temperature using a Faraday balance method. $(LaS)_xCrS_2(x \approx 1.20$) was paramagnetic on a $\sigma$-H plot at room temperature. The observed effective magnetic moment( p dr) was in fair agreement with the value calculated by spin-only contribution for $Cr^{3+}$ and spin and orbital contribution for $La^{3+}$.

  • A stoichiometric mixture of evaporating materials for $CuAlSe_{2}$ single crystal thin films was prepared from horizontal electric furnace. To obtain the single crystal thin films, $CuAlSe_{2}$ mixed crystal was deposited on thoroughly etched semi-insulating GaAs(100) substrate by the hot wall epitaxy (HWE) system. The source and substrate temperatures were $680^{\circ}C$ and $410^{\circ}C$, respectively. The crystalline structure of the single crystal thin films was investigated by the photoluminescence and double crystal X-ray diffraction (DCXD). The carrier density and mobility of $CuAlSe_{2}$ single crystal thin films measured with Hall effect by van der Pauw method are $9.24{\times}10^{16}cm^{-3}$ and $295cm^{2}/V{\codt}s$ at 293 K, respectively. The temperature dependence of the energy band gap of the $CuAlSe_{2}$ obtained from the absorption spectra was well described by the Varshni's relation, $E_{g}(T)$ = 2.8382 eV - ($8.68{\circ}10^{-4}$ eV/K)$T^{2}$/(T + 155 K). The crystal field and the spin-orbit splitting energies for the valence band of the $CuAlSe_{2}$ have been estimated to be 0.2026 eV and 0.2165 eV at 10 K, respectively, by means of the photocurrent spectra and the Hopfield quasicubic model. These results indicate that the splitting of the ${\Delta}so$ definitely exists in the ${\Gamma}_{5}$ states of the valence band of the $CuAlSe_{2}$. The three photocurrent peaks observed at 10 K are ascribed to the $A_{1-}$, $B_{1-}$, and $C_{1-}$ exciton peaks for n = 1.

  • The evaporating materials for $MgGa_2Se_4$ single crystal thin films was prepared from horizontal electric furnace. To obtain the single crystal thin films, $MgGa_2Se_4$ compounded polycrystal powder was deposited on thoroughly etched semi-insulated GaAs(100) substrate by the hot wall epitaxy (HWE) method system. The source and substrate temperatures of optimized growth conditions, were $610^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$, respectively. The source and substrate temperatures were $610^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$, respectively. The crystalline structure of the single crystal thin films was investigated by double crystal X-ray diffraction (DCXD). The temperature dependence of the energy band gap of the $MgGa_2Se_4$ obtained from the absorption spectra was well described by the Varshni's relation, $E_g(T)=2.34\;eV-(8.81{\times}10^{-4}\;eV/K)T^2/(T+251\;K)$. After the as-grown $MgGa_2Se_4$ single crystal thin films was annealed in Mg-, Se-, and Ga-atmospheres, the origin of point defects of $MgGa_2Se_4$ single crystal thin films has been investigated by the photoluminescence (PL) at 10 K. The native defects of $V_{Mg}$, $V_{Se}$ obtained by PL measurements were classified as a donors or acceptors type. And we concluded that the heat-treatment in the Se-atmosphere converted $MgGa_2Se_4$ single crystal thin films to an optical n-type. Also, we confirmed that Ga in $MgGa_2Se_4$/GaAs did not form the native defects because Ga in $MgGa_2Se_4$ single crystal thin films existed in the form of stable bonds.

  • A stoichiometric mixture of evaporating materials for $MgGa_2Se_4$ single crystal thin films was prepared from horizontal electric furnace. The crystal structure of these compounds has a rhombohedral structure with lattice constants $a_0=3.953\;{\AA}$, $c_0=38.890\;{\AA}$. To obtain the single crystal thin films, $MgGa_2Se_4$ mixed crystal was deposited on thoroughly etched semi-insulating GaAs(100) substrate by the Hot Wall Epitaxy (HWE) system. The source and substrate temperatures were $610^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$, respectively. The crystalline structure of the single crystal thin films was investigated by the double crystal X-ray rocking curve and X-ray diffraction ${\omega}-2{\theta}$ scans. The carrier density and mobility of $MgGa_2Se_4$ single crystal thin films measured from Hall effect by van der Pauw method were $6.21{\times}10^{18}\;cm^{-3}$ and 248 $cm^2/v{\cdot}s$ at 293 K, respectively. The optical absorption of $MgGa_2Se_4$ single crystal thin films was investigated in the temperature range from 10 K to 293 K. The temperature dependence of the optical energy gap of the $MgGa_2Se_4$ obtained from the absorption spectra was well described by the Varshni's equation, $E_g(T)=E_g(0)-({\alpha}T^2/T+{\beta})$. The constants of Varshni's equation had the values of $E_g(0)=2.34\;eV$, ${\alpha}=8.81{\times}10^{-4}\;eV/K$ and ${\beta}=251\;K$, respectively.

  • This study investigated the crystal growth, crystalline structure and the basic optical properties of $SnSe/BaF_2$ epilayers. The SnSe epilayer was grown on $BaF_2$(111) insulating substrates using a hot wall epitaxy(HWE) technique. It was found from the analysis of X-ray diffraction patterns that $SnSe/BaF_2$ epilayer was growing to single crystal with orthorhombic structure oriented [111] along the growth direction. Using Rutherford back scattering(RBS), the atomic ratios of the SnSe was found to be stoichiometric, almost 50 : 50. The best values for the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the DCXRD was 163 arcsec for SnSe epilarer. The epilayer-thickness dependence of the FWHM of the DCXRD shows that the quality of the $SnSe/BaF_2$ is as expected. The dielectric function ${\varepsilon}$(E) of a semiconductor is closely related to its electronic energy band structure and such relation can be drawn from features around the critical points in the optical spectra. The real and imaginary parts(${\varepsilon}_1$ and ${\varepsilon}_2$) of the dielectric function ${\varepsilon}$ of SnSe were measured. These data are analyzed using a theoretical model known as the model dielectric function(MDF). The optical constants related to dielectric function such as the complex refractive index(n*-n+ik), absorption coefficient (${\alpha}$) and normal- incidence reflectivity (R) are also presented for $SnSe/BaF_2$.
