  • Cryogenic machining uses liquid nitrogen (LN2) as a coolant. This machining process can reduce the cutting temperature and increase tool life. Titanium alloys have been widely used in the aerospace and automobile industries because of their high strength-to-weight ratio. However, they are difficult to machine because of their poor thermal properties, which reduce tool life. In this study, we applied cryogenic machining to titanium alloys. Orthogonal cutting experiments were performed at a low cutting speed (1.2 - 2.1 m/min) in three cooling conditions: dry, cryogenic, and cryogenic plus heat. Cutting force and friction coefficients were observed to evaluate the machining characteristics for each cooling condition. For the cryogenic condition, cutting force and friction coefficients increased, but decreased for the cryogenic plus heat condition.

  • In this research paper, we investigated the cryogenic line chill down characteristics of liquefied natural gas (LNG). A numerical analysis model was established and verified so that it can calculate the precise cooling characteristics of cryogenic fluid for the stable and safe utilization especially such as LNG and liquid hydrogen. The numerical modeling was programmed by C++ as an one-dimensional homogeneous model. The thermohydraulic cooling process was simulated using mass, momentum, energy conservation equations and appropriate heat transfer correlations. In this process, the relevant heat transfer correlations for nuclear boiling, transition boiling, film boiling, and single-phase heat transfer that can predict the experimental results were implemented. To verify the numerical modeling, several cryogenic line chill down experiments using LNG were conducted at the Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM) LNG and Cryogenic Technology Center.

  • For developing the cryogenic air separation unit, it requires some technology such as basic process design. equipment design and manufacturing based on the cryogenic physical properties and separation theory. In this study, we developed a process and equipment for producing high purity nitrogen which has the production capacity of 1600N㎥/h under 1 ppm $O_2$ and $H_2O$. Also we found that the number of theoretical plate(NTP) of distillation column was 44 and maximum nitrogen recovery ration of this process was 42% from the process simulation. The performance test was also carried out for the nitrogen recovery ratio and equipment efficiency. The results showed that the optimum nitrogen recovery was 41% and the maximum equipment efficiency was attained.

  • This study describes the development of a 1-inch cryogenic glove valve for an LNG pumping system and localization development achieved through the performance test. The cryogenic valve used in the LNG pumping system plays an important role in maintaining a flow rate by LNG transportation. This trial manufactured goods, which was achieved through reverse engineering and developing the assembly process. The result of the leak test satisfied the internal pressure condition using the 78-bar normal temperature test and maintained the anti-leakage condition. Also, the result of the cryogenic leak test (BS 6364: low temperature test procedure) maintained anti-leakage at -196 and 52 bar, which satisfied the test standards.

  • As the size of semiconductor devices decreases, the etching pattern becomes very narrow and a deep high aspect ratio process becomes important. The cryogenic etching process enables high aspect ratio etching by suppressing the chemical reaction of reactive ions on the sidewall while maintaining the process temperature of -100℃. ESC is an important part for temperature control in cryogenic etching equipment. Through the cooling path inside the ESC, liquid nitrogen is used as cooling water to create a cryogenic environment. And since the ESC directly contacts the wafer, it affects the temperature uniformity of the wafer. The temperature uniformity of the wafer is closely related to the yield. In this study, the cooling path was designed and analyzed so that the wafer could have a uniform temperature distribution. The optimal cooling path conditions were obtained through the analysis of the shape of the cooling path and the change in the speed of the coolant. Through this study, by designing ESC with optimal temperature uniformity, it can be expected to maximize wafer yield in mass production and further contribute to miniaturization and high performance of semiconductor devices.

  • ISO 21029 cryogenic vessel is used to transport cryogenic fluids. High-manganese steel (High-Mn steel) is widely regarded as suitable for use at cryogenic temperatures. The conventional way of manufacturing an ellipsoidal vessel head involves incremental stretching, followed by a spinning process. In this study, an alternative method for forming an ellipsoidal vessel head was proposed. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to theoretically examine the strain evolution during a multi-stage forming process, which involved progressive stretching, deep drawing, and spinning of High-Mn steel. The distribution of effective strain and strain components were analyzed at different regions of the formed part. The FEA results revealed that only normal strains were evident in the dished region of the vessel head due to the stretching process. However, the flange region experienced complex strain evolution during the subsequent deep drawing and spinning process.

  • Heat leakage is an important parameter to reflect heat insulated performance of cryogenic vessel. According to the current standard requirements, it needs to measure the daily evaporation rate to indicate heat leakage. The test needs-over 24h after cryogenic vessel in heat equilibrium as standard required, therefore test efficiency is poor and new efficient method is required to cut test time. First of all, the volume of instantaneous evaporated gas and heat leakage are calculated by the current standard corresponding to the maximum allowable daily evaporation rate of cryogenic vessel. Depending on the relationship between real daily evaporation rate and maximum allowable daily evaporation rate of cryogenic vessel, we designed a new test method based on the pressure changes over time in cryogenic vessel to determine whether its heat insulated performance meets requirements or not. Secondly, the heat transfer process was analyzed in measurement of cryogenic vessel, and the heat transfer equations of whole system were established. Finally, the test was completed in four hours; meanwhile the heat leakage and daily evaporation rate of cryogenic vessel are calculated basing on test data.

  • Recently, titanium alloys have been widely used in aerospace, biomedical engineering, and military industries due to their high strength to weight ratio and corrosion resistance. However, it is well known that titanium alloys are difficult-to-cut materials because of a poor machinability characteristic caused by low thermal conductivity, chemical reactivity with all tool materials at high temperature, and high hardness. To improve the machinability of titanium alloys, cryogenic cooling with LN2 (Liquid Nitrogen) and nanofluid MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubrication) technologies have been studied while turning a Ti-6Al-4V alloy. For the analysis of turning process characteristics, the cutting force, the coefficient of friction, and the surface roughness are measured and analyzed according to varying lubrication and cooling conditions. The experimental results show that combined cryogenic cooling and nanofluid MQL significantly reduces the cutting forces, coefficients of friction and surface roughness when compared to wet condition during the turning process of Ti-6Al-4V.
