  • In this paper, the important novelty and the defining a physical phenomenon of the resent research is the development of nonlocal stress and strain parameters on the porous sandwich beam with functionally graded materials in the top and bottom face sheets. Also, various beam models including Euler-Bernoulli, Reddy and the generalized formulation of two-variable beam theories are obtained in this research. According to a nonlocal strain elasticity theory, the strain at a reference point in the body is dependent not only on the stress state at that point, but also on the stress state at all of the points throughout the body. Thus, the nonlocal stress-strain elasticity theory is defined that can be actual at micro/nano scales. It can be seen that the critical buckling load and transverse deflection of sandwich beam by considering both nonlocal stress-strain parameters is higher than the nonlocal stress parameter. On the other hands, it is noted that by considering the nonlocal stress-strain parameters simultaneously becomes the actual case.

  • This study presents the correlations between quantified particle shape parameters and internal friction angles for nine sand specimens including six natural sands and three crushed sands. Specimens are subjected to 3D X-ray computed tomographic imaging and their particles are segmented through the aid of image processing techniques. Shapes of segmented particles are then quantified through two shape parameters such as sphericity and elongation. The direct shear apparatus enables us to measure peak and critical state friction angles of sand specimens of distinct relative densities. The gathered data show that decreasing sphericity and increasing elongation cause increases in peak and critical state friction angle with similar gradients.

  • Coarse-grained soils are typical engineering materials commonly used in many civil engineering applications such as structural fills, subgrade and drainage fills for dam, railway and bridge. Various researches have been performed with related to constitutive laws for numerical analysis of such structures. This paper presents a parametric study for a constitutive model for coarse grained materials. The model is a kind of the bounding surface models based on critical state theory. A distinct feature of the model is to capture the response of coarse-grained materials with different void ratios and confining pressures using a single set of model parameters. The model behavior is defined with a set of elastic parameters, critical state parameters, and model-specific parameters. The parametric study was performed for the model-specific parameters. The result of parametric study shows that the model is capable to capture stress-dilatancy behavior and kinematic-hardening under non-associative plastic flow.

  • The polycrystalline superconductor $SmBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{x}$ is fabricated, and intergranular magnetic properties are investigated using the critical state model, from which some useful parameters such as the critical current density and the intergranular volume fraction are obtained. The curve fitting for M-H hysteresis loop shows that the intergranular critical current density of $SmBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{x}$ / decreases in the form of ($1-T/T_{c}$ )$^{1.5}$ . The intergranular volume fraction is influenced by granular morphology. From SEM image, the grains of $SmBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{x}$ are found to be randomly shaped. This mean:; that the intergranular volume fraction of $SmBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{x}$ / should be smaller than those of superconductors, of which grains are plate-shaped such as Tl-based superconductor.

  • Many novel materials, developed in recent years, have obvious properties with different modulus of elasticity in tension and compression. The ratio of their tensile modulus to compressive modulus is as high as five times. Nowadays, it has become a new trend to study the mechanical properties of these bimodular materials. At the present stage, there are extensive studies related to the strength analysis of bimodular structures, but the investigation of the buckling stability problem of bimodular rods seems to cover new ground. In this article, a semi-analytical method is proposed to acquire the buckling critical load of bimodular slender rod. By introducing non-dimensional parameters, the position of neutral axis of the bimodular rod in the critical state can be determined. Then by combining the phased integration method, the deflection differential equation of bimodular pin-ended slender rod is deduced. In addition, the buckling critical load is obtained by solving this equation. An example, which is conducted by comparing the calculation results between the three of the methods including the laboratory tests, numerical simulation method and the method we developed here, shows that the method proposed in the present work is reliable to use. Furthermore, the influence of bimodular characteristics on the stability is discussed and analyzed.

  • A series of CIDC triaxial tests and cone penetration tests in calibration chamber were performed to investigate the relationship between state parameter and normalized cone resistance far dredged Busan sand. From the results of the triaxial tests, the critical state line of Busan sand was established, and the critical state parameters found to be $M=1.39(\phi_{cs}=34^{\circ}),\;\Gamma=1.07$ and $\lambda=0.068$. By analyzing the state parameters and corresponding cone resistances for calibration chamber specimens, the relationship between normalized cone resistance and state parameter for Busan sand was defined as $(q_c-p)/p'=27.6\exp(-10.9\Psi)$. This relationship was also shown to be independent of the stress history. From the comparison of the slope of the normalized cone resistance, m, and the normalized cone resistance at $\Psi=0$, $\kappa$, with those of various sandy soils from over the world, the relationship of m and $\kappa$ with $\lambda_{ss}$ of Busan sand was concluded to show a good agreement with the result published previously, while Busan sand had the largest $\kappa$ among the soils with similar $\lambda_{ss}$ values.

  • The objective of this work is to investigate the form of equations of state for specific refrigerants. In particular, equations of the extended van der Waals form have been studied. As a result, a new equation of state has been developed and tested over ranges of pressure and density up to 5 and 1.5 times critical, respectively. The equation of state separates the compressibility factor into two parts. One is the repulsive compressibility factor and the other is attractive. The former is in the same form of Carnahan-Starling's repulsive term with constant hard-sphere volume. The latter is based on a combination of two different functions linear to density. The equation of state developed here has 12 adjustable parameters and correlates PVT data successfully. All properties are in reduced forms.

  • The softening hyperelastic model based on the strain energy limitation is of clear concepts and simple forms to describe the failure of materials. In this study, a linear and a nonlinear softening hyperelastic model are proposed to characterize the deformation and the failure in granular materials by introducing a softening function into the shear part of the strain energy. A method to determine material parameters introduced in the models is suggested. Based on the proposed models the numerical examples focus on bearing capacity and strain localization of granular materials. Compared with Volokh softening hyperelasticity and classical Mohr-Coulomb plasticity, our proposed models are able to capture the typical characters of granular materials such as the strain softening and the critical state. In addition, the issue of mesh dependency of the proposed models is investigated.

  • The results of full-scale numerical experiments of a hybrid thorium-containing fuel cell facility operating in a close-to-critical state due to a controlled source of fusion neutrons are discussed in this work. The facility under study was a complex consisting of two blocks. The first block was based on the concept of a high-temperature gas-cooled thorium reactor core. The second block was an axially symmetrical extended plasma generator of additional neutrons that was placed in the near-axial zone of the facility blanket. The calculated models of the blanket and the plasma generator of D-T neutrons created within the work allowed for research of the neutronic parameters of the facility in stationary and pulse-periodic operation modes. This research will make it possible to construct a safe facility and investigate the properties of thorium fuel, which can be continuously used in the epithermal spectrum of the considered hybrid fusion-fission reactor.

  • A new method for designing critical control systems is proposed in this paper. The controller structure is chosen as a Davison type integral controller with an observer. The proposed method consists of two steps. First, the state feedback critical control system is designed using a quadratic performance index with tunable parameters. Second, the observer gain matrix is determined by the formal LTR procedure using a Riccati equation. Consequently, the search space can be reduced considerably compared with the conventional approach. Although the proposed method sacrifices a large freedom for the choice of controller structure provided by the principle of matching, the controller structure used in this paper is not excessively complex and can be used for most applications. An illustrative design example is presented.
