Osancheon creek is located in the southwest of the middle area in Korea. Weed community around the Osancheon creek, where various disturbances exert a bad influence directly on its community by human work or nature, was surveyed phytosocialogically. Our surveys have been accomplished from June, 2003 to September, 2003. Weed communities formed around the Osancheon creek were divided into several patterns and analysed. They have been divided into 8 communities. Community A: Humulus japonica community, B: Phragmites communiscommunity, C: Persicaria thunbergii community, D: Zi=ania latifolia community, E: Miscanthus saccharilflorus community, F: Echinochica crusgalli community, G: Typha orientalis community, H: Sataria viridis community. The flora surveyed in these communities was constituted of 19 families, 36 genera, 4 varieties, and 40 species. Wild plants such as Artemisia princeps var. orientalis Erigeron annuus, Bidens frondosa, Aeschynomene indica and Oenothera odorata were mostly light loving plants and higher resistant plants against the disturbance. Our result from the ranking all surveyed areas by the Bray-Curtis ordination method was very similar to the results from phytosocialogical table work.

This study applied the NDS method to the creek levee and the foundation of a building, for the purpose of ground improvement and cut-off. The conclusions are shown in the following. (1) The results of the field tests in the creek levee are as follows; the N value of the standard penetration test is $2{\sim}3$ before NDS grout and $9{\sim}21$ after NDS grout; in the alluvial layer, $7{\sim}11$ before NDS grout and $14{\sim}23$ after NDS grout. This confirms increasing ground strength with consistency ranging from stiff to very stiff. (2) The result of the permeability test in the creek levee shows that the ground had a great hydraulic conductivity with complete leakage before ground improvement but that the hydraulic conductivity has significantly increased to $3.17{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}4.65{\times}10^{-5}cm/sec$ after ground improvement by the NDS method. (3) The result from the field test of the foundation of the building confirms great reinforcing effects, showing that the allowable bearing capacity has increased from Pa = 5.0 $t/m^2$ before reinforcement to Pa = 25.0 $t/m^2$ after reinforcement.
Recently according to increasing of damage in creeks, it has been needed to develop a close-to-nature creek improvement technique considering flood safety as well as the functions of ecosystem and scenery preservation. In this study, the monitoring on creeks in seven provinces was accomplished to develop the technique applicable to domestic creeks between 2002 and 2007. Although the riparian ecosystem was disturbed, after just finishing the improvement on pilot creeks, the result of monitoring showed that restoration rates of creeks were satisfactory by constructing close-to-nature creek revetments. However it is hard to analyze on restoration and permissible tractive force of each revetments constructed in most creeks, because of insufficient monitoring data. Therefore the feasible study on the close-to-nature creek revetments should be performed in the near future through continuous monitoring on creeks.

The tidal creek dependent mass transport characteristic in Gyeong-Gi Bay (west coast of Korea) was studied using field measured data and numerical model. Gyeong-Gi Bay consists of 3 main tidal channels and contains a well-developed vast tidal flat. This region is famous for its large tidal difference and strong current. We aim to study the effect of tidal creek in the tidal flat on the mass exchange between the estuary and the ocean. For numerical application, the application of unstructured grid feature is essential, since the tidal creek has complicated shape and form. For this purpose, the FVCOM is applied to the study area and simulation is performed for 2 different cases. In case A, geographic characteristics of the tidal creek is ignored in the numerical grid and in case B, the tidal creek are constructed using unstructured grid. And these 2 cases are compared with the field measured cross-channel mass transport data. The cross-channel mass transport at the Yeomha waterway mouth and Incheon harbor was measured in June, 9~10 (Spring tide) and 17~18 (Neap tide), 2009. CTD casting and ADCP cross-channel transect was conducted 13 times in one tidal cycle. The observation data analysis results showed that mass transport has characteristic of the ebb dominance Line 1 (Yeomha waterway mouth), on the other hand, a flood dominant characteristic is shown in Line 2 (Incheon harbor front). By comparing the numerical model (case A & B) with observation data, we found that the case B results show much better agreement with measurement data than case A. It is showed that the geographic feature of tidal creek should be considered in grid design of numerical model in order to understand the mass transport characteristics over large tidal flat area.
The Imgok Creek is located in the Gangreung coal field, which has been known that sulfides are more abundant than other coal fields in Korea, and it has been severly contaminated by acid mine drainage (AMD) discharging from the abandoned coal mines, such as the Youngdong, the Dongduk and the Waryong coal mines. The purposes of this study are to synthetically assess the contamination of natural water, stream sediment and cultivated soils, and to provide the basic data for AMD treatment. Geochemical samples were collected in December, 1996 (dry season) and April, 1997 (after three day's rainfall). TDS of the Youngdong mine water was remarkably higher than those of other mine waters. In the Imgok Creek, concentrations of most elements, except Fe decreased with distance by dilution caused by the inflow of uncontaminated tributaries. From the results of NAMDI and $I_{geo}$ calculation, the Youngdong coal mine was the main contamination source of the study area. Groundwater pollution was not yet confirmed in this study and the paddy and farm land soils were also not yet contaminated by mining activity based on the pollution index ranging from 0.27 to 0.47.
The stability of the genetically engineered microorganisms and their recombinant plasmids released in natural environments has been regarded as one of the molecular ecological topics. In this study, the recombinant plasmids pCU103 in which the pcbCD genes involved in biodegradation of biphenyl and 4-chlorobiphenyl were cloned in pBluescript SK(+) vector, were examined for their structural and functional stability in different waters at 15 $^{\circ}C$ by the methods of electrophoresis, Southern hybridization, quantification with fluorescent dye, and transformation. The recombinant plamids maintained their stabilities for about 30 days in sterilized distilled water (SDW), 15 days in autoclaved creek water (AW), 25 days in filtered and autoclaved non-sterile creek water (FAW), 4 days in Luria-Bertani (LB) broth, and less than one day in filtered non-sterile creek water (FW). The covalently closed circular (CCC) form of the plasmid was decreased and open circular (OC) form was increased as a function of incubation time, and then linear (L) form was produced to be ultimately degraded out. The degradation rates of the plasmid were proportionally correlated to trophic level of the water, and the biological factor such as DNases was found to be one of the most critical factors affecting structural and functional stability of the plasmid in non-sterile natural water.

Comprehensive development projects were carried out on the Han River from 1982 to 1986 for the purpose of creating a more serviceable places such as a riverside parks and autoroads and so on. However because of the river development, river ecosystem and function were destroyed. And many local autonomous entity follows comprehensive development projects as if it is a model case. To investigate the impact that the river development effects the river ecosystem, two sites which are Anyangcheon and Sooipcheon were surveyed in the right of around plants ecosystem and structure. Two sites are creek of the Hna River. Sooipcheon maintains the sound ecosystem. It has sufficient carrying capacity for the river recreation activity. The reason is that a hydrophyte absorbs nutrients from the stream and the river ecosystem meets the around terrestrial one neturally. Number of hydrophyte increase from upstream going forward to downstream. Number of hydrophyte increase from upstream going forward to downstream. Anyangchoen is seriously polluted stream out of many branch stream of the Han river. In the upstream various woody plants and hydrophyte appeared. But from the river developed area at midstream, naturalized plants dominated such as Bidens tripartita, panicum dichotomiflorum etc. To manage the creek ecologically, hydrophyts were introduced in partly for natural purification after rehavilitate the riverside, and steadily monitoring is demanded.
Extended elastic impedance (EEI) is an extension of elastic impedance (EI) which is a generalization of acoustic impedance (AI) for nonzero angles of incidence and can be tuned to be proportional to reservoir properties. In this study, we evaluated EEI inversion by estimating the P-($V_p$) and S-wave velocities ($V_s$), P-wave to S-wave velocity ratio ($V_p/V_s$), and Poisson's ratio of the Second Wall Creek Sand of the Teapot Dome field, Wyoming, USA. We also applied the EEI inversion technique to estimate porosity, gamma-ray values, and density of the Second Wall Creek Sand. Data used in the study include 3-D pre-stack seismic data from the southern part of the field and four wells, selected from a large well database. The $V_s$ logs at the wells were constructed from the $V_p$ logs using the empirical relationships. The percent prediction errors for the four velocity properties are less than about 5% except for Poisson's ratio at one well, supporting that the EEI inversion can be used in the prediction of rock properties. However, the results from the EEI inversion analysis of porosity, gamma-ray values, and density at the wells were unsatisfactory and thus these properties, which are not directly computed from velocities, may not be suitable for EEI inversion.
Seasonal and spatial variations in the concentrations of trace elements, pH and Eh were found in a creek watershed affected by mine drainage and leachate from several waste rock dumps within the As-Pb-rich Indae mine site. Because of mining activity dating back to about 40 years ago and rupture of the waste rock dumps, this creek was heavily contaminated. Due to the influx of leachate and mine drainage, the water quality of upstream reach in this creek was characterized by largest seasonal and spatial variations in concentrations of Zn(up to $5.830 mg/{\ell}$), Cu(up to $1.333 mg/{\ell}$), Cd(up to $0.031 mg/{\ell}$) and $SO_4^{2-}$(up to $173 mg/{\ell}$), relatively acidic pH values (3.8-5.1) and highly oxidized condition. The most abundant metals in the leachate samples were in order of Zn($0.045-13.909 mg/{\ell}$), Fe($0.017-8.730mg/{\ell}$), Cu($0.010-4.154mg/{\ell}$) and Cd($n.d.-0.077mg/{\ell}$), with low pH(3.1-6.1), and high $SO_4^{2-}$(up to $310 mg/{\ell}$). The mine drainage also contained high concentrations of Zn, Cu, Cd and $SO_4^{2-}$ and remained constantly near-neutral pH values(6.5-7.0) in all the year. While the leachate and mine drainage might not affect short-term fluctuations in flow, it may significantly influence the concentrations of chemicals in the stream. The abundance and chemistry of Fe-(oxy)hydroxide within this creek indicated that the Fe-(oxy)hydroxide formation could be responsible for some removal of trace elements from the creek waters. Spatial and seasonal variations along down-stream reach of this creek were caused largely by the influx of water from uncontaminated tributaries. In addition, the trace metal concentrations in this creek have been decreased nearly down to the background level at a short distance from the discharge points without any artificial treatments after hydrologic mixing in a tributary. The nonconservative(i.e. precipitation, adsorption, oxidation, dissolution etc.) and conservative(hydrologic mixing) reactions constituted an efficient mechanism of natural attenuation which reduces considerably the transference of trace elements to rivers.

Long-term changes of the fish fauna and its community structure from the Jungrang Creek of the Han River system in Seoul were investigeted from 1990 to 2000. Total species occurred during the survey period were 14 species in 6 families, and total individual number was 108,366. Fishes at the Jungrang Creek had not been distributed in the 1980s and 1990 because of heavy water pollution as well as environmental damage in the riparian areas. However, Cyprinus carpio and Carassius auratus in cyprinidae were rehabitated since the early 1990s when the water quality was improved because of foundation of sewage division pipe. Species nombers gradually increased to 6 species in 1996, 9 species in 1998, and 11 species in 2000. Individual numbers rapidly increased to 164 individuals in 1996, 146 individuals in 1998, and 108,094 individuals in 2000. A large number of Cyprinus carpio and Carassius auratus, which are abundantly distributed in the main course of the Han River, were found when they migrate to the upper reaches of the Jungrang Creek for spawning. Mass fish floatings were occurred on the 21st of April and the 11th of June in 2000 due to DO depletion at the lower site (Site 4) of discharging point of Jungrang sewage treatment plant and stagnant spot(Site 3) of dammed pool. Major dominant species were Cyprinus carpio and Carassius auratus (Cyprinidae). Others dominant species were Pseudorasbora lab대 (Cyprinidae) and Silurus asotus (Siluridae). Dominance indices were relatively high (0.79 to 1.00). Species diversity andrichness indices were relatively low (0 to 1.66and 0 to 1.41, respectively). Species diversity and richness indices were slightly higher at the middle reaches (Site 2 and Site 3) than the upper reaches and the mouth of the Jungrang Creek. However, the fish fauna of the Jungrang Creek was very poor and its community structure was very simple.
