Syntheses and Properties of Quaternary Cr-Ti-B-N Coatings by a High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering Technique

  • Cr-Ti-B-N coatings were synthesized by a hybrid coating system combining high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS) and DC pulse magnetron sputtering from a $TiB_2$ and a Cr target in argon-nitrogen environment, respectively. By changing the power applied on the Cr and $TiB_2$ cathodes, the Cr-Ti-B-N coatings with various Ti/Cr ratio and B content were deposited. The phase structure, microstructure and chemical compositions of the Cr-Ti-B-N coatings were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission scanning electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). With increase of Cr element in the coatings, the nanocomposite microstructure consisting of nano-sized (Cr, Ti) N crystallites and amorphous BN phase were obtained in the coatings. The microhardness of the Cr-Ti-B-N coatings exhibited a peak value of ~41 GPa for the $CrTi_{0.1}B_{0.4}N_{1.3}$, and then decreased with further increase of Cr content in the coatings, and all the coatings exhibited low friction coefficient. The oxidation and corrosion behavior of the Cr-Ti-B-N coatings revealed better properties due to the formation of a nanocomposite microstructure.

  • 하이브리드 코팅 시스템을 이용하여 $CrMoC_xN_{1-x}$ 박막을 AISI D2와 실리콘 웨이퍼 모재 위에 증착하였다. 박막 내 탄소 함량은 $CH_4/(CH_4+N_2)$ 가스 유량 증가에 비례하여 증가했다. 탄소 함량이 0.33일 때 44GPa의 최대강도 및 -4.4GPa의 잔류응력을 나타내었다. CrMoN 박막의 평균 마찰계수는 0.42이지만, 탄소함량을 증가함에 따라 0.31까지 감소 하였다. 이것은 박막 표면과 스틸볼 사이에서 탄소가 풍부한 층이 형성되어 일종의 고체윤활제 역할을 했기때문이다. 박막의 미세조직은 X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy, 그리고 X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy를 이용하여 분석하였다.

Investigation of the TiCrN Coating Deposited by Inductively Coupled Plasma Assisted DC Magnetron Sputtering. (Inductively Coupled Plasma Assisted D.C. Magnetron Sputtering법으로 제작된 TiCrN 코팅층의 특성 분석)

  • Titanium Chromium Nitrided (TiCrN) coatings were deposited on stainless steel 316 L and Si (100) wafer by inductively coupled plasma assisted D.C. magnetron sputtering at the various sputtering power on Cr target and $N_2/Ar$ gas ratio. Increasing the sputtering power of Cr target, XRD patterns were changed from TiCrN to nitride $Cr_2Ti$. The maximum hardness was $Hk_{3g}$ 3900 at $0.3\;N_2/Ar$ gas ratio. The thickness of the TiCrN films increased as the Cr target power increased, and it showed over $Hk_{5g}3100$ hardness at 100 W, 150 W. TiCrN films were deposited by the ICP assisted DC magnetron sputtering shown good wear resistance as the $N_2/Ar$ gas ratio was 0.1, 0.3.

  • The purpose of this study is to show the friction and wear characteristics on the vapor deposited coating layers on the SCM415 steel. In this research, frictional wear characteristic of coating materials such as Ti-series, Cr-series & WC/C and TiAlN+WC/C multilayer coating was investigated under room temperature, normal air pressure and no lubricating condition. Therefore, this study carried out research on the friction coefficient, micro hardness(Hv), surface roughness and wear quantity on the vapor deposited coating layers on the SCM415 steel. As the wear experimental result, the excellence of TiAlN+WC/C multilayer coating has been proven by high micro-hardness, low friction coefficient and wear quantity.

Characteristics of TiAlN Film on Different Buffer Layer by D.C Magnetron Sputter (D.C magnetron sputter법으로 증착된 TiAlN의 중간층에 따른 특성연구)

  • TiAlN films were deposited on WC-5Co substrates with different buffer layers by D.C. magnetron sputtering. The films were evaluated by microstructural observations and measuring of preferred orientation, hardness value, and adhesion force. As a process variable, various buffer layers were used such as TiAlN single layer, TiAlN/TiAl, TiAlN/TiN and TiAlN/CrN. TiAlN coating layer showed columnar structures which grew up at a right angle to the substrates. The thickness of the TiAlN coating layer was about $1.8{\mu}m$, which was formed for 200 minutes at $300^{\circ}$. XRD analysis showed that the preferred orientation of TiAlN layer with TiN buffer layer was (111) and (200), and the specimens of TiAlN/TiAl, TiAlN/CrN, TiAlN single layer have preferred orientation of (111), respectively. TiAlN single layer and TiAlN/TiAl showed good adhesion properties, showing an over 80N adhesion force, while TiAlN/TiN film showed approximately 13N and the TiAlN/CrN was the worst case, in which the layer was destroyed because of high internal residual stress. The value of micro vickers hardness of the TiAlN single layer, TiAlN/TiAl and TiAlN/TiN layers were 2711, 2548 and 2461 Hv, respectively.

Corrosion resistance and cell performance of CrN-coated stainless steels as a metal bipolar plate for DMFC (CrN 코팅 STS 금속분리판의 부식 특성과 DMFC 성능 평가)

  • 본 연구는 스테인리스 스틸(STS)을 직접메탄올 연료전지(DMFC)용 바이폴라 플레이트에 적용하기 위한 것이다. 약산성의 연료전지 환경에서 부식저항성을 향상시키고자 오스테나이트계 STS 316L과 페라이트계 STS 430에 UBM(unbalanced magnetron) DC sputter로 CrN 코팅막을 제작하였다. CrN이 코팅된 스테인리스 스틸은 부식특성, 접촉 저항 및 접촉각 등을 측정하여 무 코팅의 스테인리스 스틸과 특성을 비교하였다. 그리고 이들 재료의 연료전지(DMFC) 적용 가능성을 알아보기 위하여 단위전지로 제작하여 연료전지 성능 등을 측정하고 평가하였다. 무 코팅 스테인리스 스틸(STS 316L, STS 430)과 CrN 코팅 스테인리스 스틸의 부식저항 특성은 동전위와 정전위 실험으로 조사하였다. 동전위 부식 실험은 -0.4~1.0 V로 0.001 M의 황산용액 또는 메탄올을 첨가하여 질소 또는 공기의 환경에서 실험을 실시하였으며, 정전위 부식 실험은 0.4 V 또는 0.6 V에서 진행하였다. 연료전지의 단전지 측정은 실제 DMFC의 운전조건에서 실시하였다. 부식실험과 단전지 실험 전/후 메탈 바이폴라 플레이트의 조직 변화는 SEM을 통해 관찰하였고, 부식산화물의 화학적 조성과 메탈 바이폴라의 표면은 EDS를 이용하여 측정하였다.

Influence of thickness ratio and substrate bias voltage on mechanical properties of AlCrN/AlCrSiN double-layer coating (두께 비율과 기판 바이어스 전압이 AlCrN/AlCrSiN 이중층 코팅의 기계적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • AlCrN 코팅은 높은 경도, 낮은 표면 조도 등의 상온에서의 우수한 기계적 특성 이외에 고온에서 안정한 합금상의 형성으로 인하여 우수한 내열성을 보이는 코팅이며, Si을 첨가하여 나노복합구조를 갖는 AlCrSiN 코팅은 고경도 특성을 나타내는 나노결정립과 고내열성을 나타내는 $Si_3N_4$ 비정질이 동시에 존재함으로써 뛰어난 고온 특성까지 보유하여 공구 코팅으로의 적용 가능성이 크다. 본 연구에서는, 가혹화된 공구사용 환경 대응 하는 더욱 우수한 내마모성 및 내열성을 보이는 코팅막을 개발하기 위해 AlCrN/AlCrSiN 이중층 코팅을 합성하였다. 합성된 코팅의 구조 및 물성을 분석하기 위해 field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), nano-indentation, atomic force microscopy(AFM) 및 ball-on-disk wear tester를 사용하였다. 내열성을 확인하기 위하여 코팅을 furnace에 넣어 500, 600, 700, 800, 900도에서 30분 동안 annealing한 후에 nano-indentation을 사용하여 경도를 측정을 하였다. 5:5, 7:3, 9:1의 두께 비율로 AlCrN/AlCrSiN 이중층 코팅을 합성하였으며 모든 코팅의 두께는 $3{\mu}m$로 제어되었다. AlCrN 코팅층의 두께가 증가할수록, 이중층 코팅의 경도 및 내마모성은 점차 향상되었지만 코팅의 밀착력은 감소하였다. 일반적으로 AlCrN 코팅은 상대적으로 높은 잔류응력을 갖고 있으므로, AlCrN 층의 두께비율이 증가함에 따라 코팅내의 잔류응력이 높아져 코팅의 경도는 증가하고 밀착특성은 낮아진 것으로 판단된다. AlCrSiN 상부층 공정시 기판 바이어스 전압을 -50 ~ -200V 로 증가시키면서 이중층 코팅을 합성하였다. XRD 분석 결과, 공정 바이어스 전압이 증가함에 따라 AlCrSiN 상부층은 점차 비정질화 되었고, 코팅의 경도와 표면 특성이 향상되는 것을 확인하였다. 이러한 특성 향상은 높은 바이어스 인가가 이온 충돌효과의 증가를 야기시켰으, 이로 인해 치밀한 코팅층 합성에 의한 결과로 판단된다. AlCrN/AlCrSiN 이중층 코팅을 어닐링 한 후 경도 분석 결과, -150, -200V에서 합성한 코팅은 900도 이상에서 26GPa 이상의 높은 경도를 보인 것으로 보아 우수한 내열성을 갖는 것으로 확인 되었다. 이는 AlCrSiN 상부층의 높은 Si 함량 (11at.%) 으로 인한 충분한 $Si_3N_4$ 비정질상의 형성과, 고바이어스 인가로 인한 AlCrN 결정상과 $Si_3N_4$ 비정질상의 고른 분배가 코팅의 내열성을 향상시키는데 기여를 한 결과로 판단된다.

Evaluation of Bond Strength in cp-Ti and Non-precious Metal-Ceramic System Using a Gold Bonding Agent (티타늄과 비귀금속 합금에 중간층으로 적용한 Au bonding agent의 금속-도재 결합에 대한 평가)

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of using a Au bonding agent applied on cp-Ti and nonprecious metal-gold-ceramic system. Metallic frameworks(diameter: 5mm, height: 20mm)(N=56, n=7per group) cast in Ni-Cr alloy, Co-Cr alloy and cp-Ti were obtained using acrylic templates and airborne particle abraded with $110{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide. Au bonding agent was applied on wash opaque firing as intermediate layer. SEM and SEM/EDS line profile were performed on the cutting the cross-section of the metal substrate-porcelain with intermediate Au coating. Groups were tested using shear bond strength(SBS) testing at 0.5mm/min. The mean SBS values for the ceramic-Au layer-metal combination were significantly higher than those ceramic-metal combination. While ceramic-Au layer-cp-Ti combinations failed to increase bond strength instead of using a titanium bonding porcelain. The appication of using Au intermediate layer significantly improve the bond strength combination with metal-ceramic system.

  • The hydraulic pump for a Electro-hydrostatic Actuator for aircrafts should be able to quickly feed large volume of oil into hydraulic cylinder in order to reduce the response time. On the other hand, it should be also able to precisely dispense small amount of oil by low-speed operation so that the steady state position control error of the EHA can be accurately compensated. This paper is focused on the investigation how the plasma coating surface treatment of cylinder barrel with CrSiN can contribute to the reduction of low-speed friction torque of a bent-axis type piston pump. The results showed that the reduction of the friction torque was not remarkable, but that the anti-wear characteristics of the CrSiN-coated cylinder barrel were much better that those of the original one.

Characterization of Product Surface according to Tool Surface Conditions when Forming TRIP1180 Steel Sheets with PVD CrN-coated Tools (PVD CrN 코팅 금형의 TRIP1180 판재 성형 시 금형의 표면상태에 따른 제품 표면특성 평가)

  • This study conducted the wear tests on bending punches coated with PVD CrN and examined the surface quality of the product formed by each punch in the forming of uncoated TRIP1180 sheets. The study quantitatively estimated the surface quality of the product by measuring the roughness and imaging the product surface. The correlation between the punch wear depth and the product surface roughness was quantitatively analyzed. The results showed that before failure occurs, the product roughness was comparable with that of the as-received, and the product surface was smooth without scratches and defects. However, after failure, the punch wear is caused by fretting wear mechanism, and a punch whose coating is not completely peeled plows the product surface, resulting in severe scratches with grooves and ridges on the product surface. Severe wear on the punch surface caused by fretting wear can rapidly degrade the product surface quality as it is directly affected by the punch surface condition, and the product surface quality accurately reflects the punch wear condition.
