  • The evaluation of reheat cracking susceptibility in CrMoV turbine rotor steel was performed using thermally simulated heat affected zones. The examinations were carried out in terms of microstructural characterization, microhardness measurement and a Charpy type notch opening three point bend test. It was found that reheat cracking susceptibility increased as the peak temperature increased. This effect was due to the combined effects of the carbide dissolution and unrestricted grain growth at 1350.deg. C peak temperature. Reheat cracking susceptibility was estimated based on microhardness measurement and prior austenite grain size. It was established that for this particular material, reheat cracking in coarse grained heat affected zone can be eliminated if the microhardness is below about 360DPH and the grain size is below about 30.mu.m. It is evident that reheat cracking susceptibility can be eliminated or reduced by carefully controlling the welding parameters such that a refined structure is produced in the coarse grained heat affected zone.

  • This study evaluated hydrogen effect of metal and non-metallic materials used in the hydrogen blended natural gas vehicle. Hydrogen penetrated concentration of 34Cr-Mo steel(850MPa tensile strength) for winter driving conditions was measured 0.0018ppm and summer driving conditions was 5.3ppm. The critical hydrogen concentration of high strength metal used in this study was measured 1.03ppm by CLT. Therefore, 34CrMo steel cas cause problems in the 30% HCNG(25MPa) environment. In case of the test for non-metallic materials, all materials met the criteria of the gas resistance test, but Fluorocarbon Rubber material had a significant change in the volume. So if it is used, extra care is needed.

  • Magnetic properties and Rockwell hardness of 1Cr-0.5Mo steel have been investigated as a function of isothermal aging time. Our results showed that coercivity, hysteresis loss and Rockwell hardness in the aged samples decreased as aging time increased. This phenomenon was analyzed using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. A significant diffusion of Cr and Mo atoms formed $M_2C$ and $M_7C$ carbides, lowering the matrix strength. $M_2C$ and $M_7C$ carbides partially segregated inside grains, diffused into grain boundaries, and finally resulted in a soft ferrite matrix and a hard grain boundary. The magnetic and mechanical softening of the matrix is likely to govern the properties of the sample more than the hardening of the grain boundary by carbide precipitations.

  • The hydrogen attack characteristics of 3Cr-1Mo-V steel as simulated weld heat affected state were studied in this paper. The hydrogen attack susceptibility was evaluated by the ratios of Charpy impact absorbed energy at 0℃($vE_{0HA}$/$vE_{0}$) and reduction of area by tensile test ($RA_{HA}$/RA) before and after exposure to hydrogen at 600℃ under 450kgf/㎠ for 300hr. The values of $vE_{0HA}$/$vE_{0}$ and $RA_{HA}$/RA were aggravated as the peak temperature of the simulated heat affected zone(HAZ) raised. These results were due to the increase of the possession of bubbles along the grain boundaries, which were resulted in the reduction of grain boundary area to be precipitated carbides due to grain coarsening and the carbon dissolved in the martensite-austenite constituent near by the prior austenite grain boundary. The possession ratio of methane bubbles formed along prior austenite grain boundaries were increased with raising the peak temperature. (Received February 22, 2000)

  • In this study, we investigate the effect of the duration of mechanical alloying on the microstructures and mechanical properties of ODS ferritic/martensitic steel. The Fe(bal.)-10Cr-1Mo pre-alloyed powder and Y2O3 powder are mechanically alloyed for the different mechanical alloying duration (0 to 40 h) and then constantly fabricated using a uniaxial hot pressing process. Upon increasing the mechanical alloying time, the average powder diameter and crystallite size increased dramatically. In the initial stages within 5 h of mechanical alloying, inhomogeneous grain morphology is observed along with coarsened carbide and oxide distributions; thus, precipitate phases are temporarily observed between the two powders because of insufficient collision energy to get fragmented. After 40 h of the MA process, however, fine martensitic grains and uniformly distributed oxide particles are observed. This led to a favorable tensile strength and elongation at room temperature and 650℃.

  • This paper dealt with a statistical analysis for evaluating the creep crack growth rate (CCGR) for Modified 9Cr-1Mo (ASTM Grade 91) steel. The CCGR data was obtained by the creep crack growth (CCG) tests conducted under various applied loads at $600^{\circ}C$. To obtain logically the B and q values used in the CCGR equation, three methods such as the least square fitting method (LSFM), the mean value method (MVM) and the probabilistic distribution method (PDM) were adopted and their CCGR lines were compared, respectively. In addition, a number of random variables were generated by using the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS), and the CCGR lines were predicted probabilistically. It was found that both the B and q coefficients followed a 2-parameter Weibull distribution well. In the case of the ranges of 10-90% for the probability variables, P(B, q), the CCGR lines were predicted. Fractographic study was conducted from the specimen after the CCG tests.

  • The rotating bending fatigue tests were performed using the specimens taken from Cr-Mo-V steel, widely sued in thermal power plant turbines, at various temperatures such as room temperature, 300 .deg. C, 425 .deg. C and 550 .deg. C. The characteristics of fatigue crack propagation were examined and analyzed by using fracture mechanics parameter. The plastic replica method was also applied in order to measure the crack length on the basis of serial observation of fatigue crack propagation behavior on the defected specimen surface. The fatigue crack propagation behavior of Cr-Mo-V steel was investigated within the frame work of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics. The propagation law of fatigue crack is obtained uniquely by using the term .sigma. $^{n}$ sub a/where .sigma. $_{a}$ is the service stress, a is the crack length and n is a constant. The values of constant n are nearly equal to 2.48, 2.60 and 8.61 at room temperature, 300 .deg. C and 425 .deg. C.

  • It's required mechanical properties of in-service facilities to maintain safety operation in power plants as well as chemical plants. In this studdy the four classes of the thermally aged 1Cr-lMo-0.25V specimens were prepared using an artificially accelerated aging method at 630$\^{C}$. Ultrasonic tests, tensile tests, K$\_$IC/ tests and hardness tests were performed in order to evaluate the degree of degradation of the material. The mechanical properties were decreased as degraded, but the attenuation coefficient and the harmonic generation level of a ultrasonic signal were increased. Expecially the nonlinear parameter derived from the harmonic generation level is sensitive and will be a good parameter to evaluate the material degradation.

  • Heat treatment condition for dissolution of the M23C6 carbides in 2.25Cr-1Mo-V-Ti material for thermal power plant tube was investigated using a dilatometer method. 2.25Cr-1Mo-V-Ti material was heat-treated at $900{\sim}1,100^{\circ}C$ for 0, 10, 30 min to find the proper dissolution condition of M23C6 carbides. The phase identification and volume fraction of the carbide were measured by using OM, SEM, EBSD and TEM analysis. Optimal heat treatment condition of M23C6 carbide dissolution was selected by predicting dissolution temperature of carbide using Bs points appeared at dilatometer curve. Experimental results showed that the conditions of carbide dissolution was 900, 1,000, $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. Eventually, the optimal heat treatment condition for dissolution was 30 min at $1,000^{\circ}C$ considering the minimum coarsening of Austenite grain size.
