This study evaluates the thermal structural safety of the three-way catalyst(TWC) substrate for domestic passenger cars. Thermal-fluid boundary conditions on the TWC substrate were determined by D-optimal DOE. The thermal stresses on the TWC substrate were calculated by the temperature distribution obtained from the CFD results. The safety factors of the TWC substrate were determined by statistical strength and stress distributions and estimated to be 0.275. The thermal stresses for TWC substrate exceeded the strength of the material. Therefore, it is necessary to redesign the TWC substrate because it has much shorter service life than design life.
In deep geological disposal concept for spent nuclear fuel, it is well-known that rock mass at near-field experiences the thermal-hydraulic-mechanical (THM) coupled behavior. The mechanical properties of rock changes during the coupled process, and it is important to consider the changes into the analysis of numerical simulation and in-situ tests for long-term stability evaluation of nuclear waste disposal repository. This report collected the previous studies on indirect coupled behaviors of rock. The effects of water saturation and temperature on some mechanical properties of rock was considered, while the change in hydraulic conductivity of rock due to stress was included in the indirect coupled behavior.
A constitutive model on oorthotropic thermo-elasto-viscoplasticity for fiber-reinforced composite materials Is illustrated, and their thermomechanical responses are predicted with the fully-coupled finite element formulation. The unmixing-mixing scheme can be adopted with the multipartite matrix method as the constitutive model. Basic assumptions based upon the composite micromechanics are postulated, and the strain components of thermal expansion due to temperature change are included In the formulation. Also. more than two sets of mechanical variables, which represent the deformation states of multipartite matrix can be introduced arbitrarily. In particular, the unmixing-mixing scheme can be used with any well-known isotropic viscoplastic theory of the matrix material. The scheme unnecessitates the complex processes for developing an orthotropic viscoplastic theory. The governing equations based on fully-coupled thermomechanics are derived with constitutive arrangement by the unmixing-mixing concept. By considering some auxiliary conditions, the Initial-boundary value problem Is completely set up. As a tool of numerical analyses, the finite element method Is used with isoparametric Interpolation fer the displacement and the temperature fields. The equation of mutton and the energy conservation equation are spatially discretized, and then the time marching techniques such as the Newmark method and the Crank-Nicolson technique are applied. To solve the ultimate nonlinear simultaneous equations, a successive iteration algorithm is constructed with subincrementing technique. As a numerical study, a series of analyses are performed with the main focus on the thermomechanical coupling effect in composite materials. The progress of viscoplastic deformation, the stress-strain relation, and the temperature History are careful1y examined when composite laminates are subjected to repeated cyclic loading.

The thermal-hydrological-mechanical (T-H-M) behavior of rock mass surrounding a large-scale high-temperature cavern thermal energy storage (CTES) at a shallow depth has been investigated, and the effects of hydrological conditions such as water table and rock permeability on the behavior have been examined. The liquid saturation of ground water around a storage cavern may have a small impact on the overall heat transfer and mechanical behavior of surrounding rock mass for a relatively low rock permeability of $10^{-17}m^2$. In terms of the distributions of temperature, stress and displacement of the surrounding rock mass, the results expected from the simulation with the cavern below the water table were almost identical to that obtained from the simulation with the cavern in the unsaturated zone. The heat transfer in the rock mass with reasonable permeability ${\leq}10^{-15}m^2$ was dominated by the conduction. In the simulation with rock permeability of $10^{-12}m^2$, however, the convective heat transfer by ground-water was dominant, accompanying the upward heat flow to near-ground surface. The temperature and pressure around a storage cavern showed different distributions according to the rock permeability, as a result of the complex coupled processes such as the heat transfer by multi-phase flow and the evaporation of ground-water.

The objective of this study was to evaluate structural safety according to environmental conditions acting on the piping of offshore structure and the motion of the structure. As for conditions acting on the piping, the maximum and minimum temperature conditions were used to analyze the design conditions of N2 generator. The motion of the structure was calculated and applied according to the DNV(Det Norske Veritas) rule. Each condition was combined and a total of 26 load combinations were constructed according to thermal load, motion load, and presence or absence of pipe support. Analysis was performed using a commercial program MSC Patran/Nastran. Thermal analysis was performed by applying the steady-state method, Sol 153. Thermal-structural coupled analysis was performed using Sol 101, a linear-static method. As a result of the analysis, the stress tended to increase when temperature inside the pipe was lower in Set 1 and Set 2, when temperature was higher in Set 3, and when the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the pipe in Set 4 was increased. However, the sum of stresses in the condition with only temperature load and the condition with only the kinetic load did not show the same value as the stress in the composite load condition of two loads. That is, the influence of the motion load varied depending on the direction of motion, the arrangement of pipes, and the position of the support. Therefore, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the size and direction of the motion load acting on the piping, the arrangement of the piping, and the location of the pipe supports during the design of piping.

Canoes are usually made from wood or FRP. However, today environment-friendly materials are preferred, and hulls made of FRP are prohibited in some countries. Polyethylene can be recycled and so is suitable for synthetic canoe construction. We used 3D Boat-Design to determine the hydrostatic properties of the canoe. Flow-structure coupled analysis was performed using ANSYS Workbench R12.1. The hull pressure and passenger weight were considered as canoe loading factors. The key parameters for the canoe are the design variables. The constraints are as follows: (1) The maximum stress must not exceed 50% of the polyethylene yield stress; and (2) the canoe weight must not exceed 50 kg. The optimal structural conditions were obtained by the response optimization process. The components of the canoe hull were manufactured from polyethylene pipes and joined by thermal fusion methods. Tests showed that the polyethylene canoe had better performance than existing canoes.
This study aimed at providing an experimental database for the mechanical properties of AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet such as stress-strain curve, yield stress, R-value and forming limit diagram(FLD) at various strain-rates and temperatures. Tensile tests were carried out on specimens having the orientations of $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ to the rolling direction with different crosshead speeds in the range between 0.008 and 8 mm/s at temperature from 25(room temperature) to $300^{\circ}C$. The influence of the specimen gage length on the tensile properties was investigated. FLD tests were performed at punch speed of 0.1 and 1.0 mm/s in the same temperature range as that of the tensile tests. Swift cup tests were conducted to verify the usefulness of the material database and the reliability of the finite element analysis(FEA). The effects of strain-rate as well as temperature were taken into account in these simulations. It was shown that the FLD-based failure was reasonably well predicted by the thermal-deformation coupled analysis for this rate-sensitive material.
In the current paper, a generalization of the results of Zhao et al. (2008) on a new design of C/C composite multidisc brake system is presented. The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of thermal sensitivity of Carbon/Carbon (C/C) composite material on the temperature distributions, deformation, and stress during braking. In this regard, a transient temperature-displacement coupled analysis for C/C composite brake discs with frictional heat generation under simulated operating conditions is performed. An axisymmetric model for brake system is used for the finite element analysis according to the theory of energy transformation and transportation. The transient temperature distributions on the friction surfaces, deformation, and stress are obtained. To check the validity, the results are corroborated with other solutions available in the literature, wherever possible. The current study could be used as a guide in the initial design of a high performance multidisc brake system.
As the construction of nuclear power plants are increased, nuclear wastes disposal has been faced as a serious problem. If nuclear wastes are to be buried in the underground stratum, thermo-mechanical behavior of stratum must be analyzed, because high temperature distribution has a significant effect on tunnel and surrounding stratum. In this study, in order to analyze the structural behavior of the underground which is subject to concentrated heat sources, a coupling method of nonlinear finite elements and linear boundary elements is proposed. The nonlinear finite elements (NFE) are applied in the vicinity of nuclear depository where thermo-mechanical stress is concentrated. The boundary elements are also used in infinite domain where linear behavior is expected. Using the similar method as for the problem in mechanical field, the coupled nonlinear finite element-boundary element (NFEBE) is developed. It is found that NFEBE method is more efficient than NFE which considers nonlinearity in the whole domain for the nuclear wastes depository that is expected to exhibit local nonlinearity behavior. The effect of coefficients of the rock mass such as Poisson's ratio, elastic modulus, thermal diffusivity and thermal expansion coefficient is investigated through the developed method. As a result, it is revealed that the displacements around tunnel are largely dependent on the thermal expansion coefficients.

In the present study, the thermoshearing experiment on a rough rock fracture were modeled using a three-dimensional grain-based distinct element model (GBDEM). The experiment was conducted by the Korea Institute of Construction Technology to investigate the progressive shear failure of fracture under the influence of thermal stress in a critical stress state. The numerical model employs an assembly of multiple polyhedral grains and their interfaces to represent the rock sample, and calculates the coupled thermo-mechanical behavior of the grains (blocks) and the interfaces (contacts) using 3DEC, a DEM code. The primary focus was on simulating the temperature evolution, generation of thermal stress, and shear and normal displacements of the fracture. Two fracture models, namely the mated fracture model and the unmated fracture model, were constructed based on the degree of surface matedness, and their respective behaviors were compared and analyzed. By leveraging the advantage of the DEM, the contact area between the fracture surfaces was continuously monitored during the simulation, enabling an examination of its influence on shear behavior. The numerical results demonstrated distinct differences depending on the degree of the surface matedness at the initial stage. In the mated fracture model, where the surfaces were in almost full contact, the characteristic stages of peak stress and residual stress commonly observed in shear behavior of natural rock joints were reasonably replicated, despite exhibiting discrepancies with the experimental results. The analysis of contact area variation over time confirmed that our numerical model effectively simulated the abrupt normal dilation and shear slip, stress softening phenomenon, and transition to the residual state that occur during the peak stress stage. The unmated fracture model, which closely resembled the experimental specimen, showed qualitative agreement with the experimental observations, including heat transfer characteristics, the progressive shear failure process induced by heating, and the increase in thermal stress. However, there were some mismatches between the numerical and experimental results regarding the onset of fracture slip and the magnitudes of fracture stress and displacement. This research was conducted as part of DECOVALEX-2023 Task G, and we expect the numerical model to be enhanced through continued collaboration with other research teams and validated in further studies.
