A computational analysis of engineering problems with moving domain or/and boundary according to either Lagrangian or Eulerian approach may encounter inherent numerical difficulties, the extreme mesh distortion in the former and the material boundary indistinctness in the latter. In order to overcome such defects in classical numerical approaches, the ALE(arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) method is widely being adopted in which the finite element mesh moves with arbitrary velocity. This paper is concerned with the ALE finite element formulation, aiming at the dynamic response analysis of baffled fuel-storage container in yawing motion, for which the coupled time integration scheme, the remeshing and smoothing algorithm and the mesh velocity determination are addressed. Numerical simulation illustrating theoretical works is also presented.
The visual analysis of buried channel (Be) devices such as buried channel MOSFETs and CCDs (Charge Coupled Devices) is investigated to give better understanding and insight for their electrical behaviours using a 3-dimensional (3-D) numerical simulation. This paper clearly demonstrates the capability of the numerical simulation of 'EVEREST' for characterising the analysis of a depletion mode MOSFET and BC CCD, which is a simulation software package of the semiconductor device. The inverse threshold and punch-through voltages obtained from the simulations showed an excellent agreement with those from the measurement involving errors of within approximately 1.8% and 6%, respectively, leading to the channel implanted doping profile of only approximately $4{\sim}5%$ error. For simulation of a buried channel CCD an advanced adaptive discretising technique was used to provide more accurate analysis for the potential barrier height between two channels and depletion depth of a deep depletion CCD, thereby reducing the CPU running time and computer storage requirements. The simulated result for the depletion depth also showed good agreement with the measurement. Thus, the results obtained from this simulation can be employed as the input data of a circuit simulator.
This paper is concerned with the numerical study on the resonance response of a rigid spar-type floating platform in coupled heave and pitch motion. Spar-type floating platforms, widely used for supporting the offshore structures, offer an economic advantage but those exhibit the dynamically high sensitivity to external excitations due to their shape at the same time. Hence, the investigation of their dynamic responses, particularly at resonance, is prerequisite for the design of spar-type floating platforms which secure the dynamic stability. Spar-type floating platform in 2-D surface wave is assumed to be a rigid body having 2-DOFs, and its coupled dynamic equations are analytically derived using the geometric and kinematic relations. The motion-variance of the metacentric height and the moment of inertia of floating platform are taken into consideration, and the hydrodynamic interaction between the wave and platform motions is reflected into the hydrodynamic force and moment and the frequency-dependent added masses. The coupled nonlinear equations governing the heave and pitch motions are solved by the RK4 method, and the frequency responses are obtained by the digital Fourier transform. Through the numerical experiments to the wave frequency, the resonance responses and the coupling in resonance between heave and pitch motions are investigated in time and frequency domains.

This paper compares simplified and finite element method (FEM) models for tower and blade in dynamic coupled analysis of floating wind turbine. A SPAR type wind turbine with catenary mooring lines is considered in numerical analysis. Floating body equation is derived using boundary element method (BEM) and convolution. Equations for mooring line, tower and blade are formulated with theories of catenary, elastic beam and aerodynamic rotating beam, respectively and FEM is applied in the formulation. By combining the equations, coupled solutions are calculated. Tower or blade may be assumed rigid or lumped body for simplicity in modeling. By comparing floating body motions, mooring line tensions and tower stresses with the simple model and original FEM model, the effect of including or neglecting elastic, rotating and aerodynamic behavior of tower and blade is discussed.

A numerical simulation method is developed to analyze the dynamic response of a cantilever switch, which is driven by electrostatic force and a basic component of electro-mechanical coupled system. First, point-charges model on conductor is proposed as a lumped parameter of electrical part. Then, this model is easily incorporated into a multi-body dynamics analysis algorithm, the generalized recursive dynamics formula previously developed by our research group. The resulting motion of a coupled overall system is formulated as a differential algebraic equation form including electrical and mechanical variables together. The equation is simultaneously solved in every time step. To implement this approach into the useful dynamics analysis tool, we used multibody dynamics software (RecurDyn) based on the generalized recursive formula using relative coordinate. The developed numerical simulation tool is evaluated by applying to many different driving condition and switch configuration. The final analysis model will be added to RecurDyn as a basic module for dynamics analysis of electro-mechanical coupled system.
This study aims to develop the numerical method to estimate level ice impact load and investigate the dynamic interaction between an arctic Spar with sloped surface and drifting level ice. When the level ice approaches the downward sloped structure, the interaction can be decomposed into three sequential phases: the breaking phase, when ice contacts the structure and is bent by bending moment; the rotating phase, when the broken ice is submerged and rotated underneath the structure; and the sliding phase, when the submerged broken ice becomes parallel to the sloping surface causing buoyancy-induced fictional forces. In each phase, the analytical formulas are constructed to account for the relevant physics and the results are compared to other existing methods or standards. The time-dependent ice load is coupled with hull-riser-mooring coupled dynamic analysis program. Then, the fully coupled program is applied to a moored arctic Spar with sloped surface with drifting level ice. The occurrence of dynamic resonance between ice load and spar motion causing large mooring tension is demonstrated.

In this paper, a design method for directional couplers using bilevel microstrip substrates is proposed. This kind of broadside-coupled coupler provides large coupling factors and broadband characteristics which can not be provided by conventional edge-coupled couplers. Physical dimensions needed for design are obtained by numerical analysis of characteristic parameters of the coupler using the least squares residual method, a kind of variational method, and an eigenvalue problem analysis method. A 3[dB] directional coupler is designed by the proposed method at the center frequency of 1 GHz, built, and tested. The validation and accuracy of the method are confirmed by comparing the numerical results with the experimental results.

Coupled thermo-hydraulic-mechanical (THM) processes are essential for the long-term performance of deep geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste. In this study, a numerical sensitivity analysis was performed to analyze the effect of rock properties on THM responses after the execution of the heater test at the Kamaishi mine in Japan. The TOUGH-FLAC simulator was applied for the numerical simulation assuming a continuum model for coupled THM analysis. The rock properties included in the sensitivity study were the Young's modulus, permeability, thermal conductivity, and thermal expansion coefficients of crystalline rock, rock salt, and clay. The responses, i.e., temperature, water content, displacement, and stress, were measured at monitoring points in the buffer and near-field rock mass during the simulations. The thermal conductivity had an overarching impact on THM responses. The influence of Young's modulus was evident in the mechanical behavior, whereas that of permeability was noticed through the change in the temperature and water content. The difference in the THM responses of the three rock type models implies the importance of the appropriate characterization of rock mass properties with regard to the performance assessment of the deep geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste.

The power flow analysis(PFA) has been performed to analyze the vibration of coupled plates excited by a point force in an arbitrry direction. The energy governing equations for longitudinal, shear and flexural waves were solved to predict the vibrational energy density and intensity. The wave transmission approach was used to consider the mode conversion at the joints of the coupled plates. Numerical results for energy density and intensity on the coupled plates were presented. Comparison of the results by PFA with exact results showed that PFA can be an effective tool to predict the spatial variation of the vibrational energy and intensity on the coupled plates at high frequencies.
In this paper, a numerical comparison of predictions by limit equilibrium analysis and 3D analysis is presented for slope/pile system. Special attention is given to the coupled analysis based on the explicit finite difference code, FLAC 3D. To this end, an internal routine (FISH) was developed to calculate a factor of safety for a file reinforced slope according to shear strength reduction technique. The case of coupled analyses was performed for stabilizing piles in slope in which the pile response and slope stability are considered simultaneously. In this study, by using these methods, the failure surfaces and factors of safety were compared and analyzed in several cases, such as toe, middle and top of the slope, respectively. Furthermore, the coupled method based on shear strength reduction technique was verified by the comparison with other analysis results.
