  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of Indongdeungjikolpitang water extract(IJTE) on the complication of diabetes. IJTE did not affect the level of blood glucose in alloxan- or streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemic mice, but inhibited the motility of gastrointestine. IJTE inhibited the writhing syndrome induced by acetic acid, the permeability of evans blue into peritoneal cavity induced by acetic acid, the paw edema induced by histamine, and the formation of cotton pellet granuloma. IJTE increased the cell viability of thymocytes and splenocytes. IJTE decreased the release of ${\gamma}-interferone$(${\gamma}-IFN$) and interleukin-2(IL-2), but did not affect the release of interleukin-4(IL-4) from murine thymocytes. IJTE increased the release of IL-4 and decreased the release of tumor necrosis $factor-{\alpha}$($TNF-{\alpha}$) and $interleukin-1{\beta}$($IL-1{\beta}$), but did not affect of ${\gamma}-IFN$ and IL-2 from murine splenocytes. IJTE decreased the release of $TNF-{\alpha}$ and $IL-1{\beta}$ from murine peritoneal macrophages. IJTE decreased the production of niric oxide(NO) from murine peritioneal macrophages and increased the phagocytic activity of murine peritoneal macrophages. These results suggest that IJTE has an anti-inflammatory action via the inhibition of $TNF-{\alpha}$, $IL-1{\beta}$ and NO production from immune cells.

  • Buckley's formocresol was first introduced as a pulp medicament in 1904, and since 1930, it has been the treatment of choice for primary molar pulpotomies. Formocresol has fixation effect of pulp tissue and high clinical success rate. But side effect such as displacement and loss of permanent successor, amelogenesis imperfecta, cyst formation, mutation by general absorption, possibility of cancer induction have been reported. Of those, dentigerous cyst can form in the periradicular region after formocresol pulpotomy caused by an alteration of the reduced enamel epithelium, which result in fluid accumulation between the epithelium and the tooth crown. The present case describes a 6-year-old girl who had accidentally discovered in the panoramic radiograph a single, well-defined, radioluscent area enclosing the second unerupted mandibular premolar. The second left primary molar had been pulpotomizied 3 year before. Surgical treatment was carried out, the primary molar was extracted and cystectomy was performed under local anesthesia. In the extracted second primary molar, formocresol cotton pellet was left in the pulp chamber. Histologic study confirmed the suspected diagnosis of dentigerous cyst. This report present a case of dentigerous cyst associated with inadequate formocresol pulpotomized deciduous molar.

  • Blood decontamination is an important factor in success of the orthodontic bracket. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the shear bond strength affected by blood decontamination. The shear bond strength was measured on blood decontamination before and after primer photopolymerization. And the adhesive remnants type and surface patterns was evaluated under scanning electron microscopy. A total of 50 human premolars were prepared. Group I was attached using conventional resin-acid etching method as control group. Group II and III were blood contaminated before curing primer and groups IV and V were blood contaminated after curing primer. Group II and IV were treated only with cotton pellet and Groups III and V were treated with cotton pellet after water washing. The mean shear bond strengths were in the order of groups I, V, III, II, and IV. In scanning electron micrographs group III and V showed more uniform surface than group II and IV. The ARI was significantly different between the control group and the experimental groups (p <0.05).

  • Nine chemolithoautotrophic and 12 chemolithoheterotrophic sulfur oxidizing bacteria were isolated using enrichment technique in modified Starkey's medium. All isolates reduced pH of the growth medium through oxidation of elementai sulfur to sulfuric acid. Isolates utilized the thiosulfate as energy source except LCH. None of the isolates grew anaerobically and utilization of glucose was found only in chemolithoheterotrophic isolates SGA6 and JIG. In vitro sulfate production from elemental sulfur was found maximum for chemoiithoautotroph LCH ($43.2mg\;100\;mL^{-1}$) and least for chemolithoheterotroph JIG ($10.04mg\;100\;mL^{-1}$). The above tests suggested that all isolates belong to the member of Thiobacillus. For field inoculation of Thiobacillus, clay based pellet formulation was developed with the cell load of $2.5{\times}10^7cfu\;g^{-1}$ of pellet. It is easy to handle by the farmers and more likely to lead to successful farming.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sealing properties of the temporary filling materials used in endodontic treatment Access cavities were prepared in 135 extracted human molar teeth. Then, cotton pellets were placed in the pulp chamber until the depth of 5 mm for the temporary filling materials; Caviton, zine oxide-eugenol, double sealing (A) (stopping 15 mm + zinc oxide - eugenol, 3.5mm ) double sealing (B) (stopping 3.0 mm + zinc oxide - eugenol 2.0 mm) and gutta percha stopping. After filling the materials, the teeth were immersed in 1 % methylene blue solutions for 3 days, 1 week and 2 weeks. Then thermal cycling was performed at the temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ and $4^{\circ}C$, followed by longitudinal sections on the center of tooth. Finally, staining on the cotton pellet was evaluated. The following results were obtained. 1. Stopping showed lower marginal sealing quality than Caviton, zinc oxide - eugenol and double sealing. 2. In 1 week group, Caviton showed higher marginal sealing quality than zinc oxide-eugenol, double sealing and stopping. 3. Caviton and double sealing (B) showed a great decrease in marginal sealing quality with the increse of time. 4. Caviton had high marginal sealing quality in 3 day group and 1 week group, but in 2 week group, Caviton showed a great decrease. 5. Double sealing (B) showed fairly high marginal sealing quality in 3 day group, but decreased greatly after 1 week on.

  • In this study, we attempted to find substitute materials, distillers residue of cassava, alfalfa pellet, and distillers residue of corn, for cotton seed meal in bottle cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus. In all treatments, the total carbon content was comparable with the exception of T4, and the total nitrogen content of T3 was similar to the control group, and C/N ratio of T4 was higher than other treatments. The diameter of plieus was the largest in T2, and the diameter of stipe was the largest in T2 and T4. And the length of stipe was largest in T1 and T2, and the most number of available stipes was in T1 and T3. The yield and bio-efficiency of fruit-body by residue of corn with soluble treatment(T3), were similar to the control of P. ostreatus. Therefore, it was suggested that residue of corn was substituted for cotton seed meal for cultivation of P. ostreatus.

  • Appropriate use of local hemostatic agent is one of the important factors on the prognosis of endodontic microsurgery. However, most investigations to date focus on the hemostatic efficacy of the agents, whereas their biologic characteristics have not received enough attention. The purpose of this paper was to review the biologic response of local hemostatic agents, and to provide clinical guidelines on their use during endodontic microsurgery. Electronic database (PUBMED) was screened to search related studies from 1980 to 2013, and 8 clinical studies and 18 animal studies were identified. Among the materials used in these studies, most widely-investigated and used materials, epinephrine, ferric sulfate (FS) and calcium sulfate (CS), were thoroughly discussed. Influence of these materials on local tissue and systemic condition, such as inflammatory and foreign body reaction, local ischemia, dyspigmentation, delayed or enhanced bone and soft tissue healing, and potential cardiovascular complications were assessed. Additionally, biological property of their carrier materials, cotton pellet and absorbable collagen, were also discussed. Clinicians should be aware of the biologic properties of local hemostatic agents and their carrier materials, and should pay attention to the potential complications when using them in endodontic microsurgery.

  • One of the most challenging task in closing anterior diastema is avoiding "black triangle" between the teeth. This paper reports a case that the closure of diastema in anterior teeth could be successfully accomplished using direct adhesive restorations and gingival recontouring. The traditional technique using Mylar strip was modified to increase the emergence profile with natural contours at the gingival-tooth interface. Mylar strip was extended out of the sulcus by approximately 1 mm high from the gingival margin, and a small cotton pellet was used to provide the emergence contour. This modified approach is acceptable for the clinical situation.

  • The fruit and seeds of Butea monosperma (Lam) Kuntze (Fabaceae) are useful in piles, anthelmintic, eye diseases, and inflammation in the Indian system of medicine. Hence, we have evaluated the anti-inflammatory activity of the fixed oil, mixed fatty acids, and unsaponifiable matter of B. monosperma against carrageenan-induced paw oedema and cotton pellet-induced granuloma in rats. The fixed oil, mixed fatty acids, and unsaponifiable matter of the oil exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity on the tested experimental animal models. The unsaponifiable matter of the oil produced higher protection compared to fixed oil and mixed fatty acids. Phytochemical analysis of the fixed oil revealed the presence of steroids and terpenoids while unsaponifiable matter of the oil showed the presence of ${\beta}-sitosterol$. Also, four fatty acids were identified in the fixed oil by gas liquid chromatography. The anti-inflammatory activity of the fixed oil may be due to unsaponifiable matter or combination of unsaponifiable matter and mixed fatty acids.
