For fitness-for-service analyses of underground natural gas pipelines, engineering assessment methods against possible defects need to be developed. The assessment methods for high pressure pipeline of KOGAS, was developed using the full size pipe burst tests and the finite element analysis. It included the defect assessment methods for a single and multi-corrosion, corrosion in girth welding part, corrosion in seam welding part, the mechanical damage defects as dent and gouge, crack and large plastic deformation of API 5L X65 pipe. In addition, we developed method to assess pipeline integrity by internal and external load to buried pipeline. Evaluation results were compared with other methods currently being applied to the gas pipeline. The program of Windows environment is made for easily using assessment methods. It provides a consistent user interface, so non-professional technician can easily and friendly use the FFS program from company intranet. Several evaluation programs is easily installed using one installer. Each program constitutes a common input interface and the output configuration program, and evaluation result store and can be recalled at any time. The FFS program based on independent evaluation method is used to evaluate the integrity and safety of KOGAS pipeline, and greatly contribute to safe and efficient operation of pipeline. This paper presents experimental, analytical and numerical investigations to develop the FFS methods for KOGAS pipeline, used as high pressure natural gas transmission pipeline within KOREA. Also, it includes the description of the integrated program for FFS methods.

Pipe and Pressure Vessels that is used in power plant and chemical industry have many Internal Defects that is corrosion caused by the flow of fluid. These Internal Defects that have possibility of explosion are very dangerous because it can not see from the outside. This days many companys using NDT method to find an Internal Defect. Most of the NDT methods have limitations that are constraint of shape and materials. But Sheargoraphy have many advantages compared conventional NDT method. It has very fast measuring speed, non-destructive and non contacting measurement. As well as it hasn't constraint of shape and materials. As a paper on the analysis of measurement of error, the important factors were the Shearing Amount and pressure, and discovered measurement of the Internal Defect of the object by using shearography. The optimal Shearing Amount and pressure was discovered and utilized.

Guided waves can be used for the inspection of long range pipelines. Surface corrosion is often found as a major defect type in pipelines. The reciprocity relation is a well-established theorem by which one can simplify complicated mathematical expressions. The approach has been already applied to plate and half-space structures to obtain the closed-form solutions of scattered amplitude. However, results for the case of cylindrical structures have not been reported yet. In this paper, the scattering of torsional waves, which is widely used in commercial applications, is explored by the reciprocity theorem approach. Obtaining closed-form solutions of the amplitudes of propagating waves is much simplified by using the reciprocal relation. The scattered amplitudes for elliptical and rectangular defect shapes are calculated with respect to defect depth and width, at frequencies between 0 and 500 kHz. The amplitude shows the periodic result as a function of frequency. The derived closed-form solutions can play a significant role in quantitative signal interpretation.
When the coatings of buried steel pipelines are damaged, corrosion could be occurred on the surface of the damaged areas. Moreover the pinhole occurred by corrosion of pipelines may cause accidents due to gas leakage. To prevent these accidents, foreign countries including UK and USA have carried out coating defect detection on the buried gas pipelines by using a DCVG or a ACVG and have conducted direct assessment of pipelines through digging the ground, and if necessary, have repaired the pipelines. That is called ECDA i.e External Corrosion Direct Assessment which is regulated by NACE standards(SP 0502) and etc. In Korea, the ECDA provisions were included in KGS FS551 in 2014 when the regulations of Safety Validation in Detail for the medium-pressure piping were introduced. We have developed the equipment which can be used to detect external corrosion of the buried gas pipelines. We have also constructed pipeline test bed for empirical test of the developed equipment. In addition, we have carried out the verification experiments of the developed equipment on the test bed to demonstrate the performance of the equipment. The experiments were conducted by comparison tests of the developed equipment and other equipments which have been introduced and used in Korea. As the result, we have found the developed equipment is easier to use and has far superior performance compared to other equipment being used in Korea.
Open rack vaporizer (ORV) has been used in liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving terminal in order to vaporize LNG into natural gas (NG) by heat exchange with seawater The U-type ORV which had been operated with seawater for 14 years is one of the important utilities of the gas production and the weld part of tube connected with header_ pipe had experienced many corrosion problems. To elucidate the cause of corrosion at weld part of vaporizer tube, corrosion potentials were compared by parts. This study concerns on the measurement of corrosion pit depth using non-destructive method and the evaluation of stress distribution in an aspect of safety with finite element analysis. In order to confirm the reliability of galvanic corrosion between weld parts and base metal, the measurement of corrosion potential by parts was conducted for 20 minutes in 3.5$\%$(wt.) NaCl solution. Many non-destructive methods were tried to measure the remaining thickness of vaporizer tube at fields. For general corrosion, tangential radiography test was confirmed as an effective method. In case of a fine corrosion pit, the shape of corrosion pit was reproduced using surface replication method. From collected data, stress distributions were quantitatively evaluated with 2-dimensional finite element method and the diagnostic evaluation on internal pressure of the U-type vaporizer could be made.

It is well known that pipelines have the highest capacity and are the safest and least environmentally disruptive form of transporting oil and gas. However, pipeline damages caused by both internal and external corrosion is a major concern threatening the reliability of oil and gas transportation and the soundness of pipeline structure. In this study, we estimated the expected allowable damage defect by comparing the ASTM B31G code which has been developed as the evaluation method of reliability and incident prevention of damaged pipelines based on the amount of loss due to corrosion and the yield strength of materials to a modified theory considering diverse detailed corrosional forms. Furthermore, we suggested the method that estimates the expected life span of used pipelines by utilizing the reliability method based on major variables such as, the depth and length of damage and corrosional rate affecting the life expectancy of pipelines.

This technical note provides some considerations for the metallographic observation of intergranular attack (IGA) in Alloy 600 steam generator tubes. The IGA region was crazed along the grain boundaries through a deformation by an applied stress. The direction and extent of the crazing depended on those of the applied stress. It was found that an IGA defect can be misevaluated as a stress corrosion crack. Therefore, special caution should be taken during the destructive examination of the pulled-out tubes from operating steam generators.
According to previous report, aged sleeves for old transmission lines have various defect such as biased installation or corrosion of steel sleeve. These defects occupied almost 50 percent of investigated aged sleeves. These defects can cause serious accidents such as rapid increasing of sag or falling out of overhead conductor from sleeves. Moreover, the defects have been limited power capacity of transmission line. This paper study on thermal behavior of ACSR 480Rail conductor and sleeve with various defect model. The detailed results were presented in the text.
Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) methods are widely employed for the nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of gas pipelines. In the application of MFL pipeline inspection technology, corrosion anomalies are detected and identified via their leakage filed due to changes in wall thickness. The gas industry is keenly interested in automating the interpretation process, because a large amount of data to be analyzed is generated for in-line inspection. This paper presents a novel approach to the tasks of data segmentation, feature extraction and depth estimation from gas pipelines. Also, we will show that the proposed method successfully identifying artificial defects.
The purpose of this paper is to present the summary of trouble shooting result on the dendrite defect of SSM(Second Surface Mirror) which is one of major thermal control elements for satellite. Through this failure analysis on SSM dendrite, it is found that the dendrite defect may happen to silver coated layer of SSM if SSM is directly exposed to the environment containing sulfur or chlorine compound. As a preventive action, it is required that SSM shall not contact directly with rubber pad containing sulfur compound.
