  • This study was conducted to determine the applicable loading rate and to evaluate the possibility of using limestones as an alkalinity source for the removal of ${NO_3}^{-}-N$ remaining after denitrification/nitrification process with the down-flow sulfur packed bed reactor(SPBR). The pretreated sewage was fed to SPBR. Three SPBRs were filled with elemental sulfur particles and limestones and the volumetric ratios of sulfur to limestone were 0%, 12.5% and 25% for R-0%, R-12.5% and R-25%, respectively. The applicable loading rate was evaluated increasing flow rate with influent ${NO_3}^{-}-N$ concentration of 20 mg/L. For R-0% with external alkalinity supply, denitrification efficiency was greater than 96% up to loading rate of $354.8g\;{NO_3}^{-}-N/m^3{\cdot}day$, and corresponding EBCT was 1.4hr. For R-12.5% and R-25%, where alkalinity was supplied by the limestone filled in the reactor, denitrification efficiency was greater than 94% up to loading rate of $283.8g\;{NO_3}^{-}-N/m^3{\cdot}day$, and corresponding EBCT was 1.7hr. The slightly better performance of R-12.5 compared to R-25 suggests that the volumetric sulfur to limestone ratio of 12.5% was enough for the supply of alkalinity required for sulfur-utilizing denitrification. DO was appeared not showing inhibitory effect on sulfur-utilizing denitrification. The clogging of SPBR caused by the produced gas can effectively be eliminated by regular introduction of treated water in up-flow mode.

  • The lifting technique is a standard control procedure that is commonly applied to dual-rate systems, where a critical difficulty is that care must be taken so that the resulting equivalent system preserves the causality constraint between the control signal and the measured output. To overcome this difficulty, the most attractive result has been suggested by defining control time sequences as the union of sample and hold time sequences. However, the sacrifice of regular control period scheme results in some serious disadvantages; restrictions on the implementation to hardware and the corresponding inefficient control scheme. On the contrary, this paper proposes a novel dual-rate control technique, which redescribes the system as a control-rate-based system having regular control period and designs the controller, with no causality constraint, through Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) formulation.

  • A method of measuring heart rate using photoplethysmograph(PPG) signal during exercise is proposed. PPG's are composed of strong base tones and their harmonics, and the strong base tones are trackable by the adaptive notch filter (ANF) which adjusts its coefficients to minimize the output power. The proposed heart rate measurement algorithm continuously notches the frequency component with the maximum power in the measured PPG, so that the fundamental frequency corresponding to heart rate is traced. We also presents methods of detecting degeneration and impulsive noise blocks to minimize the coefficient fluctuation. Experiments were conducted using real PPG signals captured during exercise. Results showed that the proposed algorithm is capable of consistently tracking the heart rate embedded in the noisy PPG's.

  • We propose a multi-rate and multi-BEP transmission scheme using adaptive overlapping pulse-position modulator (OPPM) and optical power controller in optical code division multiple access (CDMA) networks. The proposed system achieves the multi-rate and multi-BEP transmission by accommodating users with different values of OPPM parameter and transmitted power in the same network. The proposed scheme has advantages that the system is not required to change the code length and number of weight depending on the required bit rate of a user and the difference of bit rates does not have so much effect on the bit error probabilities (BEPs). Moreover, the difference of transmitted powers does not cause the change of bit rate. We analyze the BEPs of the four multimedia service classes corresponding to the combinations of high/low-rates and low/high-BEPs and show that the proposed scheme can easily achieve distinct differentiation of the service classes with the simple system configuration.

  • A new apparatus called the EFA (Erosion Function Apparatus) has been built and tested to measure the erodibility of fine-grained soils. The EFA is a simple test to predict the erosion rate of fine-grained soils along with the corresponding velocity and shear stress. In addition, it is advantageous in predicting the scour rate for actual soil samples from bridge sites. The plot of erosion rate versus shear stress is the result of an EFA test. It Indicates the critical shear stress at which erosion starts and the rate of erosion beyond that shear stress. In order to measure the erodibilities of various soils, 14 Shelby Tube soil samples are collected from the actual bridge sites and tested using the EFA. The results of the EFA tests which are the relationships between erosion rates and shear stresses are presented in this paper and research continues to develop the correlation between the erosion function and the soil properties.

  • This study aims to investigate the lead-lag relationship between the agricultural produce import price in Korea and the corresponding shipping freight rate. Since the Korean economy has pursued an export-driven growth strategy, mainly based on the manufacturing sector, the country has to depend on the vast majority of its agricultural produce consumption after import from foreign countries. Moreover, compared with other high-value products, transportation cost occupies a substantial share of the agricultural commodity price, resulting in changes in the shipping freight rate being a pivotal determinant of agricultural produce import. In this respect, this study explores the possible association between agricultural produce import in Korea and shipping freight rate and the lead-lag relationship. Using a monthly dataset of agricultural produce import prices and freight rates for Handysize and Panamax dry-bulkers for the period between January 2010 and November 2020, this study determines that the shipping freight rate, in general, leads the agricultural commodity price.

  • To evaluate the feasibility of electrodialysis for copper removal from industrial wastewater, the effect of operating parameters on the removal of copper was experimentally estimated. The limiting current density (LCD) linearly increased with the copper concentration and the flow rate. The time when the copper concentration of diluate reaches to 3 mg/L was linearly proportional to initial concentration of diluate, and the concentration of concentrate did not affect the removal rate. Increase in the flow rate gave a positive effect on the removal rate and became insignificant at flow rates greater than 2.4 L/min. The removal rate increased with the applied voltage. From the operation of the electrodialysis module used in this research, the flow rate of 2.4 L/min and the voltage corresponding to the 80~90% of LCD were found be the optimum operating condition for the copper removal from highly concentrated copper solutions.

  • In this paper an inventory model is presented for determining the ordering schedule in which the demand rate is changing linearly with time and the decay is assumed to be a constant rate of the on-hand inventory. An easy to use heuristic is developed to find the times and sizes of replenishments so as to keep the total of ordering, inventory carrying and deteriorating costs as low as possible. Solutions of the model to test problems show that our heuristic model outperforms other existing models in the literature without sacrificing the computational complexity. When there is no deterioration, the model developed is related to the corresponding model of nondeteriorating items.

  • In this paper we establish some recurrence relations for both single and product moments of order statistics from a doubly truncated linear- exponential distribution with increasing hazard rate. These recurrence relations would enable one to compute all the higher order moments of order statistics for all sample sizes from those of the lower order in a simple recursive way. In addition, percentage points of order statistics are also discussed. These generalize the corresponding results for the linear- exponential distribution with increasing hazard rate derived by Balakrishnan and Malik(1986)

  • A pin fin is optimized based on the increasing rate of heat loss by using a two-dimensional analytic method. The optimum heat loss, corresponding optimum thermal resistance and fin length are presented as a function of the fin base thickness, convection characteristic numbers ratio, fin outer radius and ambient convection characteristic number. One of the results shows that both the optimum heat loss and fin length decrease linearly whereas the optimum thermal resistance increases very slightly with increase of the fin base thickness.
