  • The surface diffusion coefficients for nickel, nickel oxide, cuppric oxide, cobalt oxide, alumina and ferric oxide have been determined at various temperatures using the sintering technique. This investigation is based on the model accounting for the sum of the contribution of volume and surface diffusion to the overall shrinkage rate during the initial stage of sintering. Simultaneous measurements of shrinkages and shrinkage rates of the materials compacts were conducted for various annealing times, the results of which were then correlated to the diffusion coefficient.

  • Zirconia modified with $MoO_3$ was prepared by impregnation of powdered $Zr(OH)_4$ with ammonium heptamolybdate aqueous solution followed by calcining in air at high temperature. Spectroscopic studies on prepared catalysts were performed by using FTIR, Raman, XRD, and DSC and by measuring surface area. Upon the addition of molybdenum oxide to zirconia up to 15 wt%, the specific surface area increased in proportion to the molybdate oxide content, while acidity measured by irreversible chemisorption of ammonia exhibited a maximum value at 3 wt% of $MoO_3$. Since the $ZrO_2$ stabilizes the molybdenum oxide species, for the samples equal to or less than 30 wt%, molybdenum oxide was well dispersed on the surface of zirconia and no phase of crystalline $MoO_3$ was observed at any calcination temperature above $400^{\circ}C$. The catalytic activities for cumene dealkylation were roughly correlated with the acidity of catalysts measured by ammonia chemisorption method, while the catalytic activities for 2-propanol dehydration were not correlated with the acidity because weak acid sites are necessary for the reaction.

  • We introduce a generic method to analyze optical 17reflectance spectra of strongly correlated electron systems including high-temperature superconductors by using an extended Drude model and Allen's approach. We explain the process step by step from reflectance through the optical conductivity and the scattering rate to the bosonic spectral function. Through the process we are able to get important information on the interactions between charge carriers from measured optical conductivity of the strongly correlated electron systems including copper oxide and iron pnitide high temperature superconductors.

  • To assess the relationship between Cd fraction in paddy soils and Cd in polished rice, soils and rice were analyzed at the 3 Cd contaminated paddy fields near closed mines. Major Cd fractions of A field were organically bound (62.6%) and Fe-Mn oxide bound (25.3%) forms. In case of B field, major Cd fractions of B1 field were carbonate bound (46.3%) and Fe-Mn oxide bound (31.6%) form whereas B2 field were residual (54.3%) and carbonate bound (21.8%) form, respectively. It showed a huge difference of Cd fraction each other. 0.1M HCl extractable Cd in soil was positively correlated with Cd in rice. Specially, the ratios of 0.1M HCl extractable Cd against total Cd content in soils were 13.7%, 2.6%, and 0.45% in A, B1, and B2 fields, respectively. These ratio were largely affected with Cd uptake to rice grain. Also, exchangable, Fe-Mn oxide bound, and carbonate bound form, which are partially bioavailable Cd fraction to the plant, were positively correlated with Cd in rice while organically bound and residual form was not correlated. Multiple regression equation was developed with Rice Cd = -0.02861 + 0.07456 FR 1(exchangeable) + 0.00252 FR 2(carbonate bound) + 0.001075 FR 3(Fe Mn oxide bound) - 0.00095 FR 4(organically bound) - 0.00348 FR 5(residual) ($R^2=0.7893^{***}$) considering Cd fraction in soils.

  • Magnetite for Water-based ferrofluid was synthesized by air oxidation of aqueous suspension in the pH range 7-12 at $65^{\circ}C$. The optimum condition of magneite formation was delineated by examining various physicochemcial properties such as Fe2+ content, phase characteristics, MHC and $\sigma$max. The point of zero charge of iron oxide powders obtained at various pH conditions were correlated with the oxidation state of Fe in the iron oxide. The magnetite powder prepared at pH 9 ws dispersed using sodium oleate and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) as dispersants, and the dispersion characteristics of the magnetite ferrofluid were examined by means of the fraction of solid dispersed, zeta potential data and FT-IR spectrum. A simple calculation on the potential energy of two interacting magnetite particles showed that the dispersion stability was directly correlated with height of the potential energy barrier or the shape of zeta potential.

  • Recent publications showed that metal nanoparticles which are made from $TiO_2,\;CeO_2,\;Al_2O_3,\;CuCl_2,\;AgNO_3$ and $ZnO_2$ induced oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory effects in cultured cells and the responses seemed to be common toxic pathway of metal nanoparticles to the ultimate toxicity in animals as well as cellular level. In this study, we compared the gene expression induced by two different types of metal oxide nanoparticles, titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TNP) and cerium dioxide nanoparticles (CNP) using microarray analysis. About 50 genes including interleukin 6, interleukin 1, platelet-derived growth factor $\beta$, and leukemia inhibitory factor were induced in cultured BEAS2B cells treated with TNP 40 ppm. When we compared the induction levels of genes in TNP-treated cells to those in CNP-treated cells, the induction levels were very correlated in various gene categories (r=0.645). This may suggest a possible common toxic mechanism of metal oxide nanoparticles.

  • The periapical response to injury is a complex interaction of inflammatory, immune, neural, vascular and synthetic activity. Nitric oxide(NO), synthesized by nitric oxide synthetase(NOS) from L-arginine, is becoming recognized as an important bio-regulatory molecule in a variety of tissue, but little is known about its possible role in periapical tissue. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression of nitric oxide synthetase(NOS) in tooth follicle, periapical abscess, granuloma and cyst. The expression of NOS in periapical lesions was evaluated by immunohistochemical staining for $NOS_2$, and $NOS_3$. The immunoreactivity was evaluated by staining intensity, and inflammatory cell infiltration. Correlationship between the periapical lesion in immunoreractivity were statistically analyzed by SPSS. The degree of $NOS_2$ and $NOS_3$ expression in periapical abscess was higher than in any other periapical lesions, and stastically significant. The expression degree of $NOS_2$ and $NOS_3$ was not correlated with periapical abscess and granuloma, but expression of $NOS_2$ showed very significant in periapical cyst. The increased expression of $NOS_2$ and $NOS_3$ was correlated with inflammatory cell infiltration degree of the periapical cyst. These results suggested that NO should play an important role in progress and/or mediation of periapical lesions.

  • 2R,3R-Butanediol, a volatile compound produced by certain rhizobacteria, is involved in induced drought tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana through mechanisms involving stomatal closure. In this study, we examined the involvement of nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide in induced drought tolerance, because these are signaling agents in drought stress responses mediated by abscisic acid (ABA). Fluorescence-based assays showed that systemic nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide production was induced by 2R,3R-butanediol and correlated with expression of genes encoding nitrate reductase and nitric oxide synthase. Co-treatment of 2R,3R-butanediol with an inhibitor of nitrate reductase or an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase lowered nitric oxide production and lessened induced drought tolerance. Increases in hydrogen peroxide were negated by co-treatment of 2R,3R-butanediol with inhibitors of NADPH oxidase, or peroxidase. These findings support the volatile 2R,3R-butanediol synthesized by certain rhizobacteria is an active player in induction of drought tolerance through mechanisms involving nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide production.

  • The metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) with external stimuli is one of the main issues in correlated oxides. The physical properties are extremely sensitive to band filling, because the MIT is attributed to the strong correlation between electrons in narrow d-band. Since hydrogen is the smallest and lightest element, it is not only likely to doped reversibly in oxides, but also acts as a dopant to provide electrons. The correlated oxides showing MIT are structurally expanded after hydrogenation, and their electrical properties are drastically changed. Researches on this phenomenon have been actively carried out to date. They are of great scientific importance, and the use of this material is very diverse, including the development of next-generation hydrogen sensor, or hydrogen-based neuromorphic devices.

  • A zinc oxide thin film doped with aluminum was deposited by RF sputtering. The deposition temperature of the sputter chamber was kept constant at $350^{\circ}C$, the power supplied to the chamber was 75 W, the oxygen flow rate was changed to 10 sccm and 20 sccm, and the thin film deposition time was changed to 120 and 180 minutes. The structures of the deposited zinc oxide thin films were analyzed by van der Waals method using an X-ray diffractometer. As a result of X-ray diffraction, the amount of oxygen supplied to the zinc oxide thin film increased, and the surface growth of the (002), (400), (110), and (103) planes showed a change with increasing deposition time. Moreover, as the amount of oxygen supplied to the zinc oxide thin film increased, their shape was observed to be coarse, and the thin film' s particles shape was correlated with the oxygen chemical defect introduced.
