  • We have developed and tested an RSFQ 4-bit Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) based on half adder cells and de switches. ALU is a core element of a computer processor that performs arithmetic and logic operations on the operands in computer instruction words. The designed ALU had limited operation functions of OR, AND, XOR, and ADD. It had a pipeline structure. We have simulated the circuit by using Josephson circuit simulation tools in order to reduce the timing problem, and confirmed the correct operation of the designed ALU. We used simulation tools of $XIC^{TM},\;WRspice^{TM}$, and Julia. The fabricated 4-bit ALU circuit had a size of $\3000{\ cal}um{\times}1500{\cal}$, and the chip size was $5{\cal} mm{\times}5{\cal}mm$. The test speeds were 1000 kHz and 5 GHz. For high-speed test, we used an eye-diagram technique. Our 4-bit ALU operated correctly up to 5 GHz clock frequency. The chip was tested at the liquid-helium temperature.

  • In the model Utilizing the TCP / IP socket communication to transmit and receive data, if the size of data is small and if data-transmission aren't frequently requested, the importance of communication speed between a server and a client isn't emphasized. But nowadays, it has emerged for large amounts of data transfer requests and frequent data transfer request. This paper propose the TCP/IP communication model that can be improved the data transfer rate in multi-core environment by changing the receiving structure of the client to receive large amounts of data and the transmission structure of the server to send large amounts of data.

  • A novel CMOS temperature sensor with binary output is implemented by using fully differential switched-capacitor circuits for resistorless implementation of the temperature sensor core. Temperature sensing is based on the temperature characteristics of the pn diodes implemented by substrate pnp transistors fabricated using standard CMOS processes. The binary outputs are generated by using the charge-balance principle that eliminates the division operation of the PTAT voltage by the bandgap reference voltage. The chip was designed in a MagnaChip $0.35-{\mu}m$ CMOS process, and the designed circuit was verified using Spectre circuit simulations. The verified circuit was laid out in an area of $950{\mu}m{\times}557 {\mu}m$ and is currently under fabrication.

  • In order to make cognitive radio systems a practical technology to be deployed in real-world scenarios, the core Software Defined Radio (SDR) systems must meet the stringent requirements of the target application, especially in terms of performance and energy consumption for mobile platforms. In this paper we present a feasibility study of hardware acceleration as an energy-efficient implementation for SDR. We identified the amplifier function from the Software Communication Architecture (SCA) for hardware acceleration since it is one of the functions called for most frequently and it requires intensive floating-point computation. Then, we used the Virtex5 Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to perform a comparison between compiler floating-point support and the on-chip floating-point support. By enabling the on-chip floating-point unit (FPU), we obtained as high as a 2X speedup and 50% of the overall energy reduction. We achieved this with an increase of the power consumption by no more than 0.68%. This demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed approach.

  • In most parallel loops of embedded applications, every iteration executes the exact same sequence of instructions while manipulating different data. This fact motivates a new compiler-hardware orchestrated execution framework in which all parallel threads share one fetch unit and one decode unit but have their own execution, memory, and write-back units. This resource sharing enables parallel threads to execute in lockstep with minimal hardware extension and compiler support. Our proposed architecture, called multithreaded lockstep execution processor (MLEP), is a compromise between the single-instruction multiple-data (SIMD) and symmetric multithreading/chip multiprocessor (SMT/CMP) solutions. The proposed approach is more favorable than a typical SIMD execution in terms of degree of parallelism, range of applicability, and code generation, and can save more power and chip area than the SMT/CMP approach without significant performance degradation. For the architecture verification, we extend a commercial 32-bit embedded core AE32000C and synthesize it on Xilinx FPGA. Compared to the original architecture, our approach is 13.5% faster with a 2-way MLEP and 33.7% faster with a 4-way MLEP in EEMBC benchmarks which are automatically parallelized by the Intel compiler.

  • A transimpedance amplifier (TIA)-optical receiver (Rx) using two intersecting active feedback system with regulated-cascode (RGC) input stage has been designed and implemented for optical interconnects. The optical TIA-Rx chip is designed in a 0.13 ${\mu}m$ CMOS technology and works up to 10 Gbps data rate. The TIA-Rx chip core occupies an area of 0.051 $mm^2$ with power consumption of 16.9 mW at 1.3 V. The measured input-referred noise of optical TIA-Rx is 20 pA/${\surd}$Hz with a 3-dB bandwidth of 6.9 GHz. The proposed TIA-Rx achieved a high gain-bandwidth product per DC power figure of merit of 408 $GHz{\Omega}/mW$.

  • As the technology of SoC design has been developed, the debugging is more and more important and users want a fast and reliable debugger. This paper deals with an implementation of the fast debugger which can reduce a debugging processing cycle by designing a modified JTAG suitable for a new RISC processor debugger. Designed JTAG is embedded to the OCD of Core-A and works with SW debugger. We confirmed the functions and reliability of the debugger. By comparing to the original JTAG system, the debugging processing cycle of the proposed JTAG is reduced at 8.5~72.2% by each debugging function. Further more, the gate count is reduced at 31.8%.

  • With the increasing demand for high-speed transmission systems, adaptive equalizers have been widely used in receivers to overcome the limited bandwidth of channels. In order to reduce the cost for testing high-speed receiver chips, on-chip eye-opening monitoring (EOM) technique which measures the eye-opening of data waveform inside the chip can be employed. In this paper, a 10-Gb/s adaptive 2-tap look-ahead decision feedback equalizer (DFE) with EOM function is proposed. The proposed EOM circuit can be applied to look-ahead DFEs while existing EOM techniques cannot. The magnitudes of the post-cursors are measured by monitoring the eye of received signal, and coefficients of DFE are calculated using them by proposed adaptation algorithm. The circuit designed in 90nm CMOS technology and the algorithm are verified with post-layout simulation. The DFE core occupies $110{\times}95{\mu}m^2$ and consumes 11mW in 1.2V supply voltage.

  • We developed a mass-memory chip by staking 1 Gbit double data rate 2 (DDR2) synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM) memory core up to 4 Gbit storage for future satellite missions which require large storage for data collected during the mission execution. To investigate the resistance of the chip to the space radiation environment, we have performed heavy-ion-driven single event experiments using Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba medium energy beam line. The radiation characteristics are presented for the DDR2 SDRAM (K4T1G164QE) fabricated in 56 nm technology. The statistical analyses and comparisons of the characteristics of chips fabricated with previous technologies are presented. The cross-section values for various single event categories were derived up to ~80 $MeVcm^2/mg$. Our comparison of the DDR2 SDRAM, which was fabricated in 56 nm technology node, with previous technologies, implies that the increased degree of integration causes the memory chip to become vulnerable to single-event functional interrupt, but resistant to single-event latch-up.
