Design of a Mixed-Spectrum Reactor With Improved Proliferation Resistance for Long-Lived Applications

  • Long-lived Small Modular Reactors are being promoted as an innovative way of catering to emerging markets and isolated regions. They can be operated continuously for decades without requiring additional fuel. A novel configuration of long-lived reactor core employs a mixed neutron spectrum, providing an improvement in nonproliferation metrics and in safety characteristics. Starting with a base sodium reactor design, moderating material is inserted in outer core assemblies to modify the fast spectrum. The assemblies are shuffled once during core lifetime to ensure that every fuel rod is exposed to the thermalized spectrum. The Mixed Spectrum Reactor is able to maintain a core lifetime over two decades while ensuring the plutonium it breeds is below the weapon-grade limit at the fuel discharge. The main drawbacks of the design are higher front-end fuel cycle costs and a 58% increase in core volume, although it is alleviated to some extent by a 48% higher power output.

  • The purpose of this study was to extract an u-PBL support system core value and design strategy based upon field experience learning. To accomplish this the study, first of all, analyzed the core values, design strategy which was selected after needs analysis and literature review of theories and cases regarding the PBL, e-PBL, blended-PBL, Field experience learning based on ubiquitous environment, and learning model based on ubiquitous technology. This study identified the three core values as; systemic support for instructional activity, just in time support for instructional activity and support for interaction facilitation. As further research areas, it might be useful to develop u-PBL instructional support system based upon the model designed from this study. Also, research concerning the verification of the model based upon implementation of the program case might be necessary.

An ultra-long-life small safe fast reactor core concept having heterogeneous driver-blanket fuel assemblies

  • New 80-MW (electric) ultra-long-life sodium cooled fast reactor core having inherent safety characteristics is designed with heterogeneous fuel assemblies comprised of driver and blanket fuel rods. Several options using upper sodium plenum and SSFZ (Special Sodium Flowing Zone) for reducing sodium void reactivity are neutronically analyzed in this core concept in order to improve the inherent safety of the core. The SSFZ allowing the coolant flow from the peripheral fuel assemblies increases the neutron leakage under coolant expansion or voiding. The Monte Carlo calculations were used to design the cores and analyze their physics characteristics with heterogeneous models. The results of the design and analyses show that the final core design option has a small burnup reactivity swing of 618 pcm over ~54 EFPYs cycle length and a very small sodium void worth of ~35pcm at EOC (End of Cycle), which leads to the satisfaction of all the conditions for inherent safety with large margin based on the quasi-static reactivity balance analysis under ATWS (Anticipated Transient Without Scram).

이중구조 가연성독봉 설계안의 최적화 및 노심 핵설계 타당성 평가 (Design Optimization of Duplex Burnable Poison Rods and Feasibility Evaluation for Core Design)

  • 한국원자력연구소에서는 기존의 일체형 가연성 독봉과 다른 이중구조로 된 가연성독봉 개념을 제시하였다. 이중구조 가연성독봉(Erbia Duplex BP)은 내부에 Natural U+Gd$_2$O$_3$, 외부에는 Enriched $UO_2$+Er$_2$O$_3$를 배열시킨 구조이다. 이러한 독봉은 장주기 노심에서 기존의 Gadolinia BP과 동일한 반응도제어를 할 수 있을 것이라 예상된다. 이중구조 가연성독봉의 핵적 타당성을 확인하기 위해 24개월 주기용 한국표준형원자로를 비교대상으로 선정하였으며, 기존 연구된 여러 가지 독봉설계안들과 4가지 핵특성에 대하여 비교 분석하였다. 핵특성 평가 결과, 이중구조가연성 독봉은 비교대상보다 무한증배계수, 첨두봉출력인자, 반응도억제가, 감속재온도계수측면에서 모두 유리한 경향을 보였다. 설계변수에 따른 민감도분석을 통해 도출한 최적화된 핵연료집합체를 이용하여 노심적용 타당성을 확인하였다. 주기길이, 첨두출력 및 감속재온도 계수를 비교하였으며 전 노심해석결과 주기길이가 비고대상보다 4-7일 길게 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 등가의 독봉집합체를 설계했음에도 불구하고 노심에 장전되는 우라늄의 양이 서로 달라서 생기는 현상으로 판단된다. 하지만 전체적인 핵특성을 비교해보면 이중구조 가연성독봉을 장전한 노심이 비교대상노심보다 다소 유리하면서도 거의 비슷함을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 경제성 평가를 통해 장주기 노심에서의 이중구조 가연성독봉의 제조 가능성 및 적용 타당성이 충분히 확인되었다.

  • PWR에의 토륨 핵연료 운용방안의 하나로 제안되었던 KTF 설계안을 바탕으로, APR-1400 노심에 맞게 설계변수에 빠른 최적화를 수행하였다. 최적화 방향은 핵확산 저항성 증대와 경제성 제고를 목표로 하였으며 최적화의 설계 기준은 핵확산 저항성의 경우 SNS, TG, BCM, Toxicity를 기준으로 하고 경제성은 FEI라는 새로운 지수를 사용하여 두 가지 모두 최대가 되는 방향으로 최적화하였다. 최적 설계안을 이용하여 APR-1400의 노심을 설계하는 과정을 여러 측면에서 검토하였으며, 비균질 노심에 토륨핵연료집합체를 사용한 설계안이 안전성 및 경제적 타당성을 갖음을 확인하였다.

  • 액체금속로 노심 열유체 설계의 기본 목표는 노심을 구성하는 집합체에서 발생하는 열량을 효과적으로 추출하기 위해 각각의 집합체 냉각재 유량을 적절히 분배하고, 이에 따른 온도분포가 적절하게 유지되도록 하는 것이다. 노심 열유체 설계 및 특성 분석은 전체노심에 대한 각 집합체의 유량영역을 구분하고, 집합체별 온도분포를 계산하여, 최종적으로 집합체에 대한 상세 부수로 해석을 하는 과정으로 진행된다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 액체금속로의 노심 열유체 설계 방법론을 기술하고, 이를 바탕으로 KALIMER의 증식특성 노심과 breakeven 노심에 대한 열유체 설계와 특성분석을 수행하였다. KALIMER는 원자력 중장기 과제로 개념설계가 진행 중인 전기출력 150MWe, 열출력 392MWth의 금속핵연료를 사용하는 액체 금속로이다.

Energy absorption characteristics of diamond core columns under axial crushing loads

  • The energy absorption characteristics of diamond core sandwich cylindrical columns under axial crushing process depend greatly on the amount of material which participates in the plastic deformation. Both the single-objective and multi-objective optimizations are performed for columns under axial crushing load with core thickness and helix pitch of the honeycomb core as design variables. Models are optimized by multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm to achieve maximum specific energy absorption (SEA) capacity and minimum peak crushing force (PCF). Results show that optimization improves the energy absorption characteristics with constrained and unconstrained peak crashing load. Also, it is concluded that the aluminum tube has a better energy absorption capability rather than steel tube at a certain peak crushing force. The results justify that the interaction effects between the honeycomb and column walls greatly improve the energy absorption efficiency. A ranking technique for order preference (TOPSIS) is then used to sort the non-dominated solutions by the preference of decision makers. That is, a multi-criteria decision which consists of MOPSO and TOPSIS is presented to find out a compromise solution for decision makers. Furthermore, local and global sensitivity analyses are performed to assess the effect of design variable values on the SEA and PCF functions in design domain. Based on the sensitivity analysis results, it is concluded that for both models, the helix pitch of the honeycomb core has greater effect on the sensitivity of SEA, while, the core thickness has greater effect on the sensitivity of PCF.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation results of JPEG core, based on the ITU-T Recommendation T.81. We designed the RTL circuit in Verilog HDL, making reference to the JPEG program from the Independent JPEG Group. The circuit has been simulated with Verilog-XL, synthesized with Design Compiler and verified using Altera FPGA. Since the synthesized circuit includes a small number of gates, it is expected to be used as a core module in image processing SOC.

  • This paper presents a HW/SW co-design environments and its validation for development of virtual component on the 32-bit RISC core which is used in the design of Information-Appliance-On-a-Chip. For the experimental environment, we developed the cycle-accurate instruction set simulator based on SE3208 RISC core of ADChips. To verify the function of RISC core at the cycle level, we implemented the verification environment by grafting this simulator on the Seamless CVE which is a commercial co-verification environment.
