  • This study investigated to designand implement web-based collaborative learning system Co-Net and map out students' learning procedure using the system, based upon Student Team Achievement Division (STAD Slavin, 1990, 1996). There are technical process and instructional considerations to be made during the design process. The former are those that concern equipment requirements and specifications and include Ease of Use, Speed of Access, and Flexibility. On the other hand, instructional considerationsare concerned with the delivery and access of instructional materials and their outcomes on learners. They are cooperative interactions within groups and group heterogeneity, learner control, group incentives, individual accountability, equal opportunity for earning high scores and contributing to group effort, task specialization, and competition among groups. A web site for a virtual learning environment designed and built by the authors and known as Co-Net is then explained along with the whole process learners inside the environment. The main page of Co-Net consists of 15 menus to implement cooperative learning process. The cooperative learning activities using 15 menus are composed of six phases (1) preparation of the new knowledge (2) presentation of the new knowledge (3) knowledge assimilation and application (4) team and individual evaluation (5) team and individual recognition Throughout the five phases, the appropriate use of cooperative learning techniques has been shown to have both academic and social benefits to learners.

  • This study aims to propose an evaluation model that enables cooperative learning using e-Learning system. Even if the teacher and the student are not in the same place at the same time, the team project deliverable submitted by the student to the online system can be viewed by the teacher, enabling the teacher to assess the student not only based on the project but also in many other aspects. The proposed e-learning cooperative learning model allows the development of assessment factors, using such factors in assessment of the student's activities which are performed through the e-learning system, and the feedback of the results to the student so that the student is further motivated for learning. The teacher performs a comprehensive assessment of such factors, which is considered in conjunction with the student's assessment. Implementing the cooperative learning model proposed in this study in various e-learning systems such as Moodle is expected to motivate the student for learning, produces better cooperative learning results, provides greater convenience of assessment to the teacher, and improves fairness of assessment by showing the student's activities in real time.

  • This study investigated the influences of the cooperative and the individualistic learning strategies on the academic achievement and the attitudes toward science instruction and science by the level of achievement. These two learning strategies endowed students with the responsibility of learning and emphasized student-centered learning which included higher order thinking activities. Cooperative learning group students studied the tasks through small group discussion, and individualistic learning group students solved the same ones individually. In the traditional group. teacher-centered expository lesson was used. The subjects of this study were 7th graders of coed middle school, and were taught about separation of mixture for 10 class periods. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that the test scores of academic achievement for cooperative learning group were significantly higher than those of individualistic and traditional learning groups. The attitudes toward science instruction and science were also more positive in cooperative learning group than the others. No interactions between the treatment and the level of previous achievement indicated that the cooperative learning strategy was effective regardless of the level of achievement.

  • The cooperative learning movement began as parts of the desegregation process in America, aiming at increasing academic achievement and social skills among diverse students. Cooperative learning may be defined as a classroom learning environment in which students work together in small heterogeneous groups. Although many studies have shown the effectiveness of cooperative learning in a variety of subjects, relatively few have focused on biology. In this study, we investigated the effects of cooperative learning on students' achievement and attitude of middle school biology students. For this purpose this study compared three sections. In one section, a cooperative learning strategy was used. Second section was taught in small groups and the third section was instructed in the traditional method. The unit 'Structures and functions of animals' was used. A total of 188 students were included in this study. These classes were treated for 10hours during 10weeks from September 1 to November 28, 1999. The pretests-posttests control group design was applyed. An analysis of covariance(ANCOVA) was used as the data analysis procedure. Significant differences were found in the achievement and the attitude of students using cooperative learning strategy(p<.05) when compared to traditional classroom structure and small group learning. Cooperative learning was more effective in the low-ability and average-ability students than the high-ability students in the science achievement. Cooperative learning is effective in both male and female students. And students in the cooperative group achieved better than those in other groups in affective, behavioral, and intention-cognitive domain of science attitude.
