Assessment of Short-Time Characteristic ACSR-OC Conductor (ACSR-OC 전선의 단시간 특성 평가)

  • The short-time permissible temperature of an overhead distribution line conductor is determined by the softening characteristics of ACSR-OC, ACSR AW/OC 160, typical conductors employed in the overhead distribution line. Transient heat transfer equation and Newton's cooling law were applied to analyze the heating and cooling effects of the insulating conductors, respectively, and the error of co-relation was calibrated after simulating the softening test to assess the short-time characteristic of the insulating conductor. In order to verify the softening characteristic, the conductors were tested with heat cycle. The test was totally carried out 200 cycles, and 1 cycle was to heat and cool at 1.1 times permissible current of the conductor, 1.15 times for 120 minutes, respectively. After heating, the tensile strength and surface of the conductor were observed. In case of ACSR-OC, as the result of 100 hour heating test, the tensile strength of the insulator was 0.8 times the initial value. This is equivalent to the value of the conductors which are used for 10 years at sites.

  • An experimental study has been carried out on cooling perfonnance of a thennoelectric module. This problem is of particular interest in the design of the refrigeration systems using thermoelectric module, such as cosmetic refrigerator, wine cellar and air cooler. The effect of the input voltage and the hot side temperature on the cooling performance is studied in detail. The $\Delta$T, temperature difference between cold side and hot side surface of thermoelectric module, is described in terms of the input voltage and the hot side temperature. It is found that the cooling capacity can be improved by increasing the input voltage and by reducing the heat from the hot side of the thermoelectric module. However, COP is decreased with an increase in the input voltage, since power consumption is also increased. Thus, optimum input voltage can be selected based on cooling capacity and COP.

  • In this study, the experiment of thermal performance about closed-type hybrid cooling tower was conducted. A closed type cooling tower is a device similar to a general cooling tower, but with cooling tower replaced by a heat exchanger. The test section for this experiment has the process that the cooling water flows from top part of heat exchanger to bottom side in the inner side of tube, and spray water flows gravitational direction in the outer side of it. Air contacts of tube outer side are counterflow. The heat transfer pipe used in this experiment is a bare type tube having an outside diameter of 15.88mm. In this experiment, heat performances of the cooling tower are calculated such as overall heat transfer coefficient of between the process fluid and air, cooing capacity and pressure drop.

  • Due to enhanced sealing and insulation of buildings, extensive use of glasses for building envelopes and increased use of heat generating office equipments, energy consumption of modem buildings for cooling is steadily increasing. With outdoor air cooling(ODAC) system, cooling load can be reduced by exchanging indoor air with the cold outdoor air during spring and fall seasons. If ODAC is operated based only on temperature, total cooling load may virtually increase if the outdoor humidity is high. To overcome this problem, ODAC should be controlled based on enthalpy. In this work energy saving characteristics of enthalpy controlled ODAC is studied using dynamic simulation. The result shows that cooling load can be reduced by 27% by adopting ODAC.

A Study on the Thermal Characteristics of a High Speed Spindle according to the Cooling Existence of Rear Part and the Cooling Conditions (고속주축의 냉각조건과 후반부 냉각 유무에 따른 열특성 연구)

  • The important problem in high speed spindle is to reduce and minimize the thermal effect by motor and bearing. This paper presents the thermal characteristic analysis for a high speed spindle with and without cooling at the rear part, considering the viscosity and the flow rate of cooling oil. A high speed spindle is composed of angular contact ceramic ball bearings, high speed built-in motor, oil jacket cooling and so on. The thermal analyses of high speed spindle need to minimize the thermal effect and maximize the cooling effect and they are carried out under the various cooling conditions. Heat generations of the bearing and the high speed motor are estimated from the theoretical and experimental data. This result can be applied to the design and manufacture of a high speed motor spindle.

  • Results of combustion tests performed for a regenerative cooling combustor of a 30 tonf-class liquid rocket engine were described. The combustion chamber has chamber pressure of 60 bar, propellant mass flow rate of 89 kg/s, and nozzle expansion of 12. The combustion chamber is composed of mixing head, baffle injector, and regenerative cooling chamber. The hot firing tests were performed at design and off-design points. The test results show that the combustion characteristic velocity is in the range of 1738${\sim}$1751 m/sec and the specific impulse of the combustion chamber is in the range of 253${\sim}$270 sec. The peak of combustion characteristic velocity and specific impulse for this combustor is shown at mixture ratio of 2.35 and 2.5, respectively.

  • This study has investigated numerically and experimentally the flow characteristic of air-cooling fan for transmission oil cooler in the large-size diesel engine. Impellers of cooler were composed of eight normal-scale and eight small-scale blades in the zig-zag pattern. In order to increase the discharge pressure of cooling fan, turbo type of fan blade is proposed in the impeller for transmission oil cooler. The fluidic performance of cooling fan has been estimated numerically by using the commercial code and experimentally carried out with reference on AMCA Standard 210-99. As a result, it is confirmed that the numerical result for performance curve is in good agreement with experimental data.

  • A design procedure for cooling towers was set up using the Merkel theory In the past, the design data could be different depending on the characteristic curve that the engineer adopted. Therefore, consistent and reasonable criteria are required, which are based on the exact information of the cooling tower performance. In this study, analysis program for both the design and off-design for a counterflow-type cooling tower was developed and verified by comparing with experimental data. The off-design performance with various operating conditions was analyzed, as well.

A study on the counter-flow cooling tower performance analysis using NTU-method (NTU법을 이용한 대향류형 냉각탑의 성능해석에 관한 연구)

  • The thermal performance of cooling towers is affected by the temperature of inlet water, wet bulb temperature of entering air add water-air flow rate. In this study, the effects of these variables are simulated using NTU-method and experimentally investigated for the counter-flow cooling towers. The simulation program to evaluate these variables which affect the performance of cooling tower was developed. The maximum errors between the results of simulations and experiments were 3.8% under the standard design conditions and 5.4% under the other conditions. The performance was increased up to 46~50% as the water loading was increased from $6.8m^3$/$hr\cdot m^2$ to $15.9m^3$/$hr\cdot m^2$. The range was reduced up to 56~42% when the wet bulb temperature of the entering air was increased from $22^{\circ}C\; to\; 29^{\circ}C.$
