This study describes thermal performance of heating and cooling demonstration system using ETSC(Evacuated tubular solar collector) installed at Seo-gu art center of Kwangju. For demonstration study, a reading room with about $350m^2$ was heated and cooled using that system. The demonstration system was consisted of ETSCs, storage tank, hot water supply tank, subsidiary boiler, and subsidiary tank. From January to March in 2006, demonstration test were performed with 4 control mode to find the optimum control condition for solar thermal system. After experiments and analysis, this study found that solar thermal system of control mode IV was corresponded to 78% for the hot water supply and 49% for space heating.
The purpose of this study was to show how tomaintain high efficiency and to use reasonably when being applied the cold-heat storage systems to the showcase. An experimental study was performed to manufacture the showcase system in a laboratory. Comparing the result at general operation condition with that of the new condition using ice storage system, this study showed the effects of the refrigerant sub-cooling, and with using inverter. Using ice storage system, the ice making process was operated during midnight being not needed the cooling of the showcase through the continuous running of the condenser unit. And then, the refrigerant was sub-cooled using the stored cold-heat after being discharged from the air cooling condenser during the day time. Through the experiments, the load transfer rate for the showcase using inverter and ice storage was estimated about 30.0%. And showed that the total power consumption of the showcase with inverter could be reduced about 37% than that of the showcase without inverter.

We have developed a cylindrical multi-terminal capacitive-conductive sensor that could be attached to the internal surface of cooling system pipe to evaluate capacitance and conductivity of heat transfer fluid. It was used as measuring system to diagnose insulating condition, by which was kept a insulating resistance of inner stack and at the same time was cooled electrochemical heat of reaction of FCEV(fuel cell electric vehicle) stack that used a compressed hydrogen gas reacting with oxygen in accordance with variation on thermal degradation of nonconductive heat transfer fluid. Also to assess diagnosis characteristics of heat transfer fluid, i.e. coolant, we have performed accelerated aging test using developed sensor attached to cooling system. Consequently, it was measured dielectric and electric resistance of coolant to estimate and analyse for dielectric properties by degradation condition.

As a measure of improving the mechanical properties of a diffusion bonded joint of a ferritic/martensitic steel (FMS), the post-bonding heat treatment (PBHT) is applied. In the temperature range of normalizing condition ($950-1,050^{\circ}C$), diffusion bonding is employed with compressive stress (6 MPa). Due to the martensite structure distributed in the matrix, Vicker's hardness values of the as-bonded are much higher than those of the as-received. Through the PBHT for 1 h at $720^{\circ}C$, hardness values are recovered to as low as those of the as-received condition. Also, tensile properties of PBHT are similar to those of the as-received at up to the test temperature of $550^{\circ}C$, when the diffusion bonding is carried out over $1,000^{\circ}C$. Based on the creep-rupture testing performed at $650^{\circ}C$ in air environment, the joint efficiency of the PBHTed specimens is about 80% in, which is higher than that of the as-bonded specimens.
The variation of the mechanical properties, microstructures and the formation of retained austenite with heat treatment conditions in austempered ductile cast iron has been investigated. In the case of austempered ductile cast iron below 25mm diameter, it has been found that a pearlite structure are not obtained under a super cooled condition at range of $0.05^{\circ}C/sec{\sim}10^{\circ}C/sec$, and the matrix is precipitated in graphite, bainite and retained austenite. After austempering treatment the retained austenite is increased with decreasing cooling rate. The elongation increases with decreasing super cooling rate, and the optimum result has been shown to be the elongation of 15.6% at super cooling rate of $0.05^{\circ}C/sec$. The optimum result has been shown to be the tensile strength-elongation balance of $1656kgf/mm^2.%$ and it is more than doubled to as the casting state and continuous cooling condition.
Dependence of the freeze-drying process condition on microstructure of porous W and pore formation mechanism were studied. Camphene slurries with $WO_3$ contents of 10 vol% were prepared by milling at $50^{\circ}C$ with a small amount of dispersant. Freezing of a slurry was done in Teflon cylinder attached to a copper bottom plate cooled at $-25^{\circ}C$. Pores were generated subsequently by sublimation of the camphene during drying in air for 48 h. The green body was hydrogen-reduced at $800^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, and sintered in the furnace at $900^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. After heat treatment in hydrogen atmosphere, $WO_3$ powders were completely converted to metallic W without any reaction phases. The sintered samples showed large pores with the size of about $70{\mu}m$ which were aligned parallel to the camphene growth direction. Also, the internal wall of large pores and near bottom part of specimen had relatively small pores with dendritic structure due to the growth of camphene dendrite depending on the degree of nucleation and powder rearrangement in the slurry.
For the application of superconducting fault current limiters(SFCLs) to the protection system, quench recovery characteristics of Au/YBCO thin film were investigated. The Au/YBCO thin film was designed as a SFCL element with a bi-spiral pattern. The SFCL element limited the fault current successfully. For the analysis of the recovery to superconducting state, we measured resistance variation of the SFCL element after the quench. In addition, in order to investigate the dependence of quench characteristics of SFCL on the $LN_2$ cooling condition, we measured the recovery time under a pressure of 1, 2 and 3 atm. As the results, the recovery time increased in proportion to the duration of the fault currents. In the sub-cooled condition, while the quench development was exactly the same, the recovery time was shortened as the pressure increased.
The performance of microturbine CHP system equipped with an absorption chiller was analyzed by modelling of a microturbine and an absorption chiller. The microturbine having recuperator was simulated by the Brayton cycle model. The mass flow rate and available heat energy of the exhaust gas from the microtubune were simulated, and this results were utilized as input values for the generator of the absorption chiller. The absorption chiller is a single-effect air cooled type having solution heat exchanger. When heat input to the generator increased, the heat transfer rate and UA of the heat exchangers of the absorption chiller proportionally increased. Besides, the COP of the absorption chiller increased with increase of the heat input to the generator under the sufficient size of the evaporator condition. When the capacity of the CHP system increased from 30 to 60 kW, the mass flow rate of the LiBr for the absorption chiller increased by two times, and UA values for evaporator and condenser were increased by 3.9 and 3.4 times, respectively, under the same COP condition.

The performance of a microturbine CHP system equipped with an absorption chiller was analyzed by modeling it. The microturbine with recuperator was simulated with the Brayton cycle model. The mass flow rate and available heat energy of the exhaust gas from the microturbine were simulated. These results were utilized as input values for the generator of the absorption chiller. The absorption chiller is a single-effect air cooled type with a solution heat exchanger. The heat input into the generator was proportional to the heat transfer rate and the UA values of the heat exchangers of the absorption chiller. Furthermore, the COP of the absorption chiller increased with respect to an increase of the heat input into the generator, under the sufficient evaporator capacity condition. When the capacity of the CHP system increased from 30 to 60 kW, the mass flow rate of the LiBr for the absorption chiller doubled, and the UA values for evaporator and condenser increased by factors of x3.9 and x3.4, respectively, under the same COP condition.

In this study heat transfer characteristics of kerosene at supercritical condition was predicted. And a sample heat transfer calculation was performed using this result. The prediction was done by assuming kerosene as a mixture of a number of pure substances, and combining the thermodynamic properties of them, using NIST SUPERTRAPP. A regeneratively cooled supersonic combustor will be desinged using the resultant thermophysical property data of supercritical kerosene. Comparing with the combustion test results of the regenerative cooling combustor, the predicted thermophysical property data will be verified.
