Rail geometries such as cant, grade and curvature can be easily represented by means of a track coordinate system. In this analysis, in order to derive a dynamic and constraint equation of a wheelset, the track coordinate system is used as an intermediate stage. Dynamic and constraint equations of railway vehicle bodies except the wheelset are written in the Cartesian coordinate system as a conventional method. Therefore, whole dynamic equations of a railway vehicle are derived by combining wheelset dynamic equations and dynamic equations of railway vehicle bodies. Constraint equations and constraint Jacobians are newly derived for the track coordinate system. A process for numerical analysis is suggested for the derived dynamic and constraint equations of a railway vehicle. The proposed dynamic analysis of a railway vehicle is validated by comparison against results obtained from VI-RAIL analysis.
The wheelsets are one of most important component: damages in wheel tread and press fitted axle are a significant cost for railway industry. Since failure in railway wheelset can cause a disaster, regular inspection of defects in wheels and axles are mandatory. Ultrasonic testing, acoustic emission and eddy current testing method and so on regularly check railway wheelset in service. However, it is difficult to use this method because of its high viscosity and because its sensitivity is affected by temperature. Also, due to noise echoes it is difficult to detect defects initiation clearly with ultrasonic testing. It is necessary to develop a non-destructive technique that is superior to conventional NDT techniques in order to ensure the safety of railway wheelset. In the present paper, the new NDT technique is applied to the detection of surface defects for railway wheelset. To detect the defects for railway wheelset, the sensor for defect detection is optimized and the tests are carried out with respect to surface and internal defects each other. The results show that the surface crack depth of 1.5 mm in press fitted axle and internal crack in wheel could be detected by using the new method. The ICFPD method is useful to detect the defect that initiated in the tread of railway wheelset.
This study is objected by suggesting rationalization method of management and maintenance cost for railway investment assessment. The estimate of rational benefit and cost are a work of vital importance to decide railway investment as preliminary feasibility investigation is institutionally reinforced since January 2007. In particular, railway management and maintenance cost have to be applied to realistic and detail cost as railway investment assessment guide. For example, types of railway, construction of new line, improvement of conventional line, double tracking, railway electrification. However, railway investment assessment is inconsistency because of estimating the railway management and maintenance cost using existing unrealistic management and maintenance cost. Therefore, this study is performed parametric analysis effecting on the railway management and maintenance cost considered new technique, enhanced facilities and improved standard. Also, it suggests the itemized standard management and maintenance cost. Finally, it will be helped to establish the base of railway investment through the rationalization method of management and maintenance cost.
This research work aims to develop an optimal design using Finite Element (FE) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) methods to replace the traditional concrete and timber material by a Synthetic Polyurethane fibre glass composite material in railway sleepers. The conventional timber railway sleeper technology is associated with several technical problems related to its durability and ability to resist cutting and abrading action of the bearing plate. The use of pre-stress concrete sleeper in railway industry has many disadvantages related to the concrete material behaviour to resist dynamic stress that may lead to a significant mechanical damage with feasible fissures and cracks. Scientific researchers have recently developed a new composite material such as Glass Fibre Reinforced Polyurethane (GFRP) foam to replace the conventional one. The mechanical properties of these materials are reliable enough to help solving structural problems such as durability, light weight, long life span (50-60 years), less water absorption, provide electric insulation, excellent resistance of fatigue and ability to recycle. This paper suggests appropriate sleeper design to reduce the volume of the material. The design optimization shows that the sleeper length is more sensitive to the loading type than the other parameters.
ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 is currently planning, making contract, constructing and operating at several lines in European well-developed railway countries different from past ten years ago, and applying extensively for purpose of its intercompatibility and operational efficiency, and economic feasibility. On the other hand, ATP system correspond to ETCS Level 1, which was domestically introduced in early 2000, has introduced, operated, and planned or constructed in national railwaynetwork, but the lines, which its improvement period is come, are being occurred starting Gyeongbu Line. Therefore, we study the consideration and construction plan by stages if LTE-R Korean Radio-based Train Control System for conventional & high-speed railway under domestic development is extensively applied as the third National Railway Network Construction Plan was announced.
This paper presents the comparison and analysis of the power supply system of a Maglev train and conventional electric railway. Even though all Maglev trains have batteries on their vehicles, electric power supply from the ground side is necessary for levitation, propulsion, on-board electrical equipment, battery recharging, and so on. At low speeds up to $100{\sim}150(km/h)$, the Maglev train, generally, uses a mechanical contact, a current collector as same as conventional electric railway. However, at high speeds, the Maglev train can no longer obtain power from the ground side by using a mechanical contact. Therefore, high speed Maglev trains use their own way to deliver the power to the vehicle from the ground. In this paper, the power supply systems of the german, japanese, and korean low- and high-speed Maglev trains have been reviewed.
On a conventional rail vehicle, passive primary suspensions stabilize wheelsets in the longitudinal and yaw direction. However, these suspensions reduce the natural curving ability due to the profile of the wheels. Stabilizing and steering of the wheelsets generate the conflict problems in design process. Therefore, most systems are designed to guarantee the stability in spite of decreased curving performance. As a result, severe wear of the wheels and rails occur on tight curves and squeal noise on curving is high. Active steering has been proposed to satisfy stabilizing and steering performance simultaneously. This paper describes the possibility investigation about the application of the active steering bogie for a urban railway vehicle. Vehicles run on an amount of tight curves at mid or low speed in urban railways. Thus, it is important to reduce the wear and squeal noise between wheels and rails. Simulations show that active steering can be reduce the wear and squeal noise significantly compared to conventional systems.
The conventional SCADA adopted for the electric railway has the mere function of controlling and monitoring the hardware itself. Lack of the functions necessary far the fault prevention and the system recovery requires the operators to depend on their intuition and experience. To make up far these shortcomings of the conventional SCADA, PIS(Power Information System) visually offers integrated information for the optimal operation of the power system by manipulating the raw data acquired from the SCADA. In this paper we have studied the variety of information and its feasibility that can be offered individually by PIS.
Railway wheel/rail contact conditions have an influence on dynamic behavior of rolling stock. If there are problems of incompatibility between wheel and rail, damages like wheel wear, wheel spalling, rail wear, etc are occurred. Especially wheel and rail profiles are important factor of vehicle curving performance, so compatibility study between wheel and rail has to be carried out preferentially, In this study, we have analyzed the compatibility between wheel and rail of KNR conventional line to improve the maintenance efficiency of wheel and rail. Thus we showed the results relating to wheel/rail geometric contact, vehicle running performances as the change of wheel/rail combination.
The rolling-stocks used in conventional line have suffered wheel problems due to lack of adaptability with track. These brought out severe wheel flange wear, these have caused unstable ride characteristics of rolling-stock. Especially, Wheel flange wear is severely influenced by wheel profile but lateral suspension characteristics. This study was started to induce wheel profile suitable for domestic railway environment. Thus, we analyzed the wear characteristics of wheel profiles that are being applied to railway rolling-stock in KNR. To analyze wheel wear characteristics, we have conducted experiment studies for passenger rolling-stock and obtained useful datum.
