  • In binary solidification compositional convection in a porous mushy layer influences the quality of the final products. We consider the mushy layer solidifying from below with a constant solidification velocity. The disturbance equations for the mushy layer are derived using linear stability theory. The basic-state temperature fields and the distribution of the porosity in the mushy layer are investigated numerically. When the superheat is large, the thickness of the mushy layer is relatively small compared to the thickness of the thermal boundary layer. With decreasing the superheat the critical Rayleigh number based on the thickness of the mushy layer increases and the mushy layer becomes stable to the compositional convection. The critical Rayleigh number obtained from the continuity conditions of temperature and heat flux at the mush-liquid interface is smaller than that from the isothermal condition at the upper boundary of the mushy layer.

  • Discrete vortex method was applied for simulating an active control of turbulent leading- edge separation bubble. The leading-edge separation zone was perturbed by a time-dependent sinusoidal perturbation of different frequencies and levels. In order to describe the local sinusoidal perturbation at the separation point, a source pulsation vortex technique was proposed. The present two-dimensional vortex simulations were qualitatively compared with the experimental results for a blunt circular cylinder, where perturbation was introduced along the square-cut leading edge of the cylinder $(Kiya et al.^{(6,7)}).$ It was found that the reattachment length attained a minimum point at low levels of perturbation and two minima at a moderate higher perturbation frequency. The effects of local perturbation on the evolution of leading-edge separation bubble were scrutinized by comparing the perturbed flow with the natural flow. These comparisons were made for the distributions of mean velocity and its velocity fluctuations, intermittency and wall velocity. The motions of instantaneous reattachment in the space-time domain were demonstrated, which were also compared with the experimental findings. In order to investigate the reduction mehanism of reattachment length in the separation bubble, various cross-correlations for velocity and pressure and the relevant convection velocities were evaluated. It was observed that the convection velocity was closely associated with its corresponding pulsationg frequency.

  • An analytical model for predicting the convection-diffusion of solute dumped in a homogeneous open sea of constant water depth has been developed in a time-integral form. The model incorporates spatially uniform, uni-directional, mean and oscillatory currents for horizontal convection, the settling velocity for the vertical convection, and the anisotropic turbulent diffusion. Two transformations were introduced to reduce the convection-diffusion equation to the Fickian type diffusion equation, and then the Galerkin method was then applied via the expansion of eigenfunctions over the water column derived from the Sturm-Liouville problem. A series of calculations has been performed to demonstrate the applicability of the model.

  • Mixed convection in a horizontal annulus is considered, and the effect of a forced flow on the natural convective flow is investigated. The inner cylinder is hotter than the outer cylinder, and the outer cylinder is rotating with constant angular velocity with its axis at the center of the annulus. The unsteady streamfunction-vorticity equation is solved with a finite difference method. For the fluid with Pr=0.7, there appear flows with two eddies, one eddy, or no eddy according the Rayleigh and Reynolds numbers. The rotation of the outer cylinder reduces the heat transfer rate at the wall of the annulus. The oscillatory multicellular flow of a low Prandtl number fluid with Pr=0.01 can be effectively suppressed by the forced flow.

  • Mixed convection of air in a horizontal concentric cylindrical annulus is investigated numerically. Isothermal boundary conditions are prescribed at the inner and outer cylinders, with the inner cylinder being warmer. The forced flow is induced by the outer cylinder which is rotating slowly with constant angular velocity with its axis at the center of the annulus. The effect of the forced flow on the flow pattern and heat transfer of natural convection is investigated for the annulus of (inner-cylinder radius/gap width) = 1. There appear two eddies, one eddy or no eddy according to the Rayleigh and Reynolds numbers. Map of the three flow regimes is constructed on the Ra-Re plane. (author). 28 refs., 9 figs., 2 tabs.

  • A numerical analysis of initial unsteady state flow and heat transfer in an enclosed cavity has been performed by the Modified QUICK Scheme. The stable QUICK Scheme which modified the coefficient always to be positive is included in this numerical analysis. The implicit method is applied to solve the unsteady state flow; between iterations the PISO (Pressure - Implicit with Splitting of Operators) algorithm is employed to correct and update the velocity and pressure fields on a staggered grid. The accuracy of the Modified QUICK Scheme is proved by applying fewer grid systems than those which Ghia et al. and Davis applied. The initial unsteady mixed convection in an enclosed cavity is analyzed using the above numerical procedure. This study focuses on the development of the large main vortex and secondary vortex in forced convection, the effects of the Rayleigh Number in natural convection and the relative direction of the forced and natural convection.

  • Because of the importance of suction or injection in the fields of aerodynamics, space science and many other industrial applications, our present study is motivated. The effect of natural convection on MHD flow past a vertical plate with suction or injection is studied. We have tried to solve the dimensionless governing equations by using finite difference scheme. To ensure the validity of our numerical solutions, we have compared our numerical solutions for temperature and velocity for the case of suction and injection for unit Prandtl number with the available exact solutions in the literature. The corresponding codes were written in Mathematica 5.0 for calculating numerical solutions for temperature and velocity and the comparison between the exact and numerical solutions. For the purpose of discussing the results some numerical calculations are carried out for non-dimensional temperature T, velocity u, skin friction ${\tau}$ and the Nusselt number $N_u$, by making use of it, the rate of heat transfer is studied.

  • Using the film-based particle image velocimetry, natural convective flows have been measured quantitatively in a rectangular enclosure with a heater located on the bottom surface. The success rate of the present interrogation method has been obtained as a function of the number of particle pairs and the distance between the particle pairs. The influence of the diffraction halo at the center have been effectively eliminated by rotating-subtracting the original Fourier-transformed image. By utilizing the coded multiple pulsed illumination with two different time intervals, the minimum measurable velocity have been improved. The results of the velocity distributions and the heat transfer correlations have been obtained for different locations of heater in the enclosure.

  • In this work, the hydromagnetic and thermal characteristics of natural convection flow in a vertical parallel plate micro-porous-channel with suction/injection is analytically studied in the presence of Hall current by taking the temperature jump and the velocity slip at the wall into account. The governing equations, exhibiting the physics of the flow formation are displayed and the exact analytical solutions have been obtained for momentum and energy equations under relevant boundary conditions. The impact of distinct admissible parameters such as Hartmann number, Hall current parameter, permeability parameter, suction/injection parameter, fluid wall interaction parameter, Knudsen number and wall-ambient temperature ratio on the flow formation is discussed with the aid of line graphs. In particular, as rarefaction parameter on the micro-porous-channel surfaces increases, the fluid velocity increases and the volume flow rate decreases for injection/suction.

  • The velocity profiles in the laminar free convection boundary layer on a uniformly heated vertical plate are measured by a Laser Doppler Velocimeter for air in the range of modified Grashof number G $r_{\chi}$*=1.172x10$^{9}$ . The fringe mode, forward scatter type of the LDV system is used and the small magnesium oxide particles are used for the scattering pafticles. The analytical non-dimensionalized velocity profiles are obtained by use of an analog computer for the comparison with the experimental results. The experimental reults are in good agreement with the analytical solution obtained with an aid of the analog computer.er.
