The events at Three Mile Island in the United States brought about fundamental changes in the ways that simulation would be used in nuclear operations. The need for research simulators was identified to scientifically study human-centered risk and make recommendations for process control system designs. This paper documents the human factors research conducted at the Human Systems and Simulation Laboratory (HSSL) since its inception in 2010 at Idaho National Laboratory. The facility's primary purposes are to provide support to utilities for system upgrades and to validate modernized control room concepts. In the last decade, however, as nuclear industry needs have evolved, so too have the purposes of the HSSL. Thus, beyond control room modernization, human factors researchers have evaluated the security of nuclear infrastructure from cyber adversaries and evaluated human-in-the-loop simulations for joint operations with an integrated hydrogen generation plant. Lastly, our review presents research using human reliability analysis techniques with data collected from HSSL-based studies and concludes with potential future directions for the HSSL, including severe accident management and advanced control room technologies.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for the development of weight control programs to maintain and promote healthy behavior in women college students by identifying their weight control behaviors and factors that influence these behaviors. Method: Data were collected from 300 women student participants and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression with the SPSS 18.0 program. Result: Weight control behavior showed a significant difference according to participants' gender role identity type. Weight control behaviors were correlated with self-efficacy, body image, objective BMI, and ideal BMI. Factors influencing weight control behavior were self-efficacy (${\beta}$= .449, $p$<.001), secret method for weight loss (${\beta}$= .181, $p$<.001), monthly allowance below 200,000 won (${\beta}$= .156, $p$= .006), weight control support from others (${\beta}$= .124, $p$= .013), eating breakfast (${\beta}$= .119, $p$= .015), and age (${\beta}$= .113, $p$= .023) with R-sq. value of 45.3%. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that development of interventions for weight control behavior and health education for college women should reflect identified factors influencing weight control behavior and gender role identity.
Objectives: This study was conducted to determine factors related to glycemic control among Korean patients with diabetes. Methods: Data was collected from the Fourth (2007-2009) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) which was a nationwide, cross-sectional survey. The study participants who are available for hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) were 1,441 patients with diabetes aged 30 years and older. Poor glycemic control was defined as $HbA1c{\geq}7.0%$. Data were analysed using logistic regression. Results: The proportion of patients with the poor glycemic control ($HbA1c{\geq}7.0%$) was 49.5%. After adjusting for confounding factors, younger aged persons (30-49 years) were less likely to control the blood glucose than older aged persons (60-69 years) (Adjusted OR=0.533, 95% CI [0.295-0.960]) and longer duration of diabetes was positively related to poor glycemic control (Adjusted OR=2.018, 95% CI [1.418-2.873]). Conclusions: Age and duration of diabetes were significantly related to blood glucose control. Therefore, considering these factors is helpful for developing a strategy to improve blood glucose control in diabetes.
Background: Little is known about the news coverage of cancer risk factors in Korea. This study aimed to examine how the news media encompasses a wide array of content regarding cancer risk factors and related cancer sites, and investigate whether news coverage of cancer risk factors is congruent with the actual prevalence of the disease. Materials and Methods: A content analysis was conducted on 1,138 news stories covered during a 5-year period between 2008 and 2012. The news stories were selected from nationally representative media in Korea. Information was collected about cancer risk factors and cancer sites. Results: Of various cancer risk factors, occupational and environmental exposures appeared most frequently in the news. Breast cancer was mentioned the most in relation to cancer sites. Breast, cervical, prostate, and skin cancer were overrepresented in the media in comparison to incidence and mortality cases, whereas lung, thyroid, liver, and stomach cancer were underrepresented. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this research is the first investigation dealing with news coverage about cancer risk factors in Korea. The study findings show occupational and environmental exposures are emphasized more than personal lifestyle factors; further, more prevalent cancers in developed countries have greater media coverage, not reflecting the realities of the disease. The findings may help health journalists and other health storytellers to develop effective ways to communicate cancer risk factors.
This study was conducted on the basis of the Theory of Planned Behavior to analyze factors affecting intentions for health behaviors defined as non smoking, moderate drinking and exercise in male office workers. The participants of this study consisted of 230 male office workers of 10 workplaces located in Seoul. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: 1. Non smoking For smokers. perceived behavioral control, subjective norm and attitude were factors affecting on intention for non smoking, and these factors explained 29% of the total variance of non smoking intention. 2. Moderate drinking For drinkers, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control and attitude were factors affecting on intention for moderate drinking. and these factors explained 5% of the total variance of moderate drinking intention. 3. Exercise For those who exercise irregularly or don't exercise, perceived behavioral control, subjective norm and attitude were factors affecting on intention for exercise, and these factors explained 26% of the total variance of exercise intention. 4. Health Behaviors For all participants, perceived behavioral control, subjective norm and attitude were factors affecting on intention for health behaviors, and these factors explained 34% of the total variance of intention for overall health behaviors. And health behavior intention affected practice of health behaviors, but perceived behavioral control didn't.
Objectives : This study is designed to identify the need for an efficient infection control plan in the curriculum of Dept. of Dental Hygiene and encourage dental hygienists to be more attentive to infection control by analyzing their personal protective measures, hand-washing frequency and other factors relating to infection control. Methods : A survey was conducted of 471 dental hygienists in general hospitals, dental clinics and dental hospitals in City of Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do from December 20, 2009 to February 21, 2010. Results : 1. Among those who worked for more than 11 years, personal protection (3.79) and hand-washing frequency (3.90) factors were rated high (p<0.05). 2. When surveyed by workplace, personal protection was high in general hospitals (3.75) while hand-washing frequency was high in dental clinics (3.74). 3. Among those who received infection control education more than three times, personal protection (4.07) and hand-washing frequency (3.80) were high (p<0.05). 4. Personal protection-related factors were general hospital workers, necessity of infection control education and awareness on infectious disease (p<0.05), while factors associated with hand-washing frequency were number of patients per day, whether or not infection control-related class is given at school, necessity of infection control education and awareness on infectious disease (p<0.05). Conclusions : To enhance awareness of infection control, it may be necessary to addan infection control-related class to the school curriculum and provide the necessity of conducting continuous and systematic infection control education through newly entering staff training and education of dental practitioners.
The purpose of this study is to identify and comprehensively explain the SCM-related factors involved in the realization of RTE, including the quality of information concerning SCM, the quality of SCM partnerships, and relationship controlling factors (planning control, behavioral control, and outcome control). This study systematizes the interactions among these factors into a form of a model, elucidating how these interactions affect and shape RTE characteristics. To validate the research model proposed in the study, filed survey was conducted with 79 staffs in Korean company using SCM. The findings of the study can be summarized as follows: First, the quality of information concerning SCM had significant effect on the quality of SCM partnerships, planning control, behavioral control, and outcome control. Not only does the quality of SCM information directly influence the quality of SCM partnerships, planning control, behavioral control, and outcome control; but it also indirect influence on forecasting, agility, and visibility of SCM though its influence on the different forms of relationship control. Second, the quality of SCM partnerships also had significant effect on planning control, behavioral control, and outcome control. In addition to directly influencing these forms of relationship control, the quality of SCM partnerships also indirectly influenced forecasting, agility, and visibility though its influence on relationship control. Third, planning control significantly influenced forecasting, agility and visibility. Fourth, behavioral control significantly influenced forecasting, but neither agility nor visibility. Fifth, outcome control had significant influence on forecasting, agility, and visibility.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyzing the relationship between perceived health status, health locus of control, self-esteem, self-efficacy and HPB in patients with multiple myeloma to identify factors influencing health promoting behavior (HPB). Methods: One hundred patients were recruited into the study. The data were collected by personal interviews using questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression analysis were used with SPSS program to were analyze the data. Results: There were significant relationships between self-esteem (r=.787, p<.001), self-efficacy (r=.681, p<.001), internal health locus of control (r=.557, p<.001), powerful others health locus of control (r=.517, p<.001), chance health locus of control (r=-.251, p=.012), perceived health status (r=.532, p<.001) and HPB. Significant factors in explaining HPB were self-esteem, powerful others health locus of control, self-efficacy and perceived health status and together they accounted for 71% of variance. Conclusion: The study findings indicate that self-esteem, powerful others health locus of control, self-efficacy, and perceived health status were important factors in explaining HPB in patients with multiple myeloma. As self-esteem was an important variable in HPB, health promotion program designed for this population should focus on self-esteem and these other factors to enhance effective health promotion behavior.
Appearance management is a serious issue for adults and young people in Korean society. People of various ages have used diverse means to improve their appearances. This study focused on dieting as an appearance management behavior in female adolescents. Dieting behaviors are not just a means to improve appearance; they may also relate to individuals' beliefs and self-control. The importance of individual psychological/personality factors cannot, therefore, be ruled out. Such factors can help explain personality factors explain "what causes a compulsive diet and what factors can alleviate it". This study reviewed the literature on perfectionism and self-control as individual personality factors, and empirically examined the effects of these variables on perceived body distortion and dieting behaviors. We performed a structural equation model analysis to verify our hypothesis. The results are as follows: we found perfectionism to be positively related to perceived body distortion and dieting behaviors; we also found self-control to be negatively related to perceived body distortion though unrelated to dieting behaviors; finally, our analysis identified a relationship between perceived body distortion and dieting behaviors. These results indicate that perfectionism and self-control should be considered when conducting guidance and counseling sessions on issues related to dieting behaviors for adolescent' appearance management. This paper concludes by discussing the study's implications and limitations.
Purpose: This study was to compare and to examine the factors related to risk behaviors of adolescents living in small and medium-sized cities and in rural areas. Methods: The subjects were 545 adolescents (295 from small and medium-sized cities and 250 from rural areas). The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson corelation coefficients, and multiple regression with IBM SPSS 19.0 program. Results: The factors influencing the risk behaviors of adolescents in small- medium cities were school, peer risk factors and community risk factors, self- control among protective factors, positive communication with parents, positive peer associations, these variables explained 42.0%. The most important variable explaining the risk behaviors of adolescents in small- medium cities was positive communication with parents, followed by community risk factors, peer risk factors, positive peer relationships, school and self-control. The factors affecting the risk behaviors of rural adolescents were school, personal risk factor, peer risk factor, self- control factor, which explained 38.5% of the risk behaviors of adolescents in rural areas. Among them, the most important variable explaining risk behaviors was personal risk factors, followed by peer risk factors, school, and self-control. Conclusion: These finding suggest a need to develop a strategy to improve positive communication with parents for adolescents living in small- medium cities and a strategy to reduce personal risk factors and peer risk factors for rural adolescents.
