This paper focuses on geometrically non-linear static analysis of a simply supported beam made of hyperelastic material subjected to a non-follower transversal uniformly distributed load. As it is known, the line of action of follower forces is affected by the deformation of the elastic system on which they act and therefore such forces are non-conservative. The material of the beam is assumed as isotropic and hyperelastic. Two types of simply supported beams are considered which have the following boundary conditions: 1) There is a pin at left end and a roller at right end of the beam (pinned-rolled beam). 2) Both ends of the beam are supported by pins (pinned-pinned beam). In this study, finite element model of the beam is constructed by using total Lagrangian finite element model of two dimensional continuum for a twelve-node quadratic element. The considered highly non-linear problem is solved by using incremental displacement-based finite element method in conjunction with Newton-Raphson iteration method. In order to use the solution procedures of Newton-Raphson type, there is need to linearized equilibrium equations, which can be achieved through the linearization of the principle of virtual work in its continuum form. In the study, the effect of the large deflections and rotations on the displacements and the normal stress and the shear stress distributions through the thickness of the beam is investigated in detail. It is known that in the failure analysis, the most important quantities are the principal normal stresses and the maximum shear stress. Therefore these stresses are investigated in detail. The convergence studies are performed for various numbers of finite elements. The effects of the geometric non-linearity and pinned-pinned and pinned-rolled support conditions on the displacements and on the stresses are investigated. By using a twelve-node quadratic element, the free boundary conditions are satisfied and very good stress diagrams are obtained. Also, some of the results of the total Lagrangian finite element model of two dimensional continuum for a twelve-node quadratic element are compared with the results of SAP2000 packet program. Numerical results show that geometrical nonlinearity plays very important role in the static responses of the beam.
The behavior of buried pipes is directly influenced by the nonlinearity and complex characteristics of the surrounding soil. However, the simplified beam-spring model, which ignores the nonlinearity and complex behavior of soil, is commonly used in practice. In response, several studies have employed continuum analysis methods to account for the nonlinear and complex behavior of the soil. This paper presents various numerical continuum analysis techniques and verifies their comparison with full-scale tests. The study found that reaction force results close to the full-scale test could be obtained by applying contact surface characteristics that take into account the interaction between the ground and the buried pipe. In the case of sharing pipe and soil node method and ignoring the interaction between pipe and soil, excessive reaction force was derived, and the failure shapes were different. In addition, this study applied the dynamic explicit analysis method, ALE method, and CEL method. It was confirmed that the displacement-reaction relationship and failure shape are similar to those of the static analysis.

In this paper, a global acoustic design sensitivity analysis (DSA) of field point pressure with respect to structural sizing design variables is developed. Firstly acoustic sensitivity is formulated and implemented numerically. And it is combined with continuum structural sensitivity to obtain the global acoustic, design sensitivity. For this procedure, GASA (global acoustic design sensitivity analyzer) has been developed. A half scale of automobile cavity model is considered in this paper. In order to confirm accuracy of the results of global acoustic DSA obtained by GASA, it is compared with the result of central finite difference method. In order to reduce computation time, Rayleigh approximated solution is evaluated and compared with the solution which used every nodal velocities. Also the acoustic optimization procedure is performed using design sensitivities. From these numerical studies, it can be shown that global acoustic DSA is a useful tool to improve acoustic problems.
this paper was concentrated on the finite element formulation to solve boundary value problems by using the isotropic elasto-plastic damage constitutive model proposed previously(Noh, 2000) The plastic damage of ductile materials is generally accompanied by large plasticdeformation and strain. So nonlinearity problems induced by large deformation large rotation and large strain behaviors were dealt with using the nonlinear kinematics of elasto-plastic deformations based on the continuum mechanics. The elasto-plastic damage constitutive model was applied to the nonlinear finite element formulation process of Shin et al(1997) and an improved analysis model considering the all nonlinearities of structural behaviors is proposed. Finally to investigate the applicability and validity of the numerical model some numerial examples were considered.
This paper presents the analytical solutions for the size-dependent static analysis of the functionally graded (FG) beams with various boundary conditions based on the nonlocal continuum model. The nonlocal behavior is described by the differential constitutive model of Eringen, which enables to this model to become effective in the analysis and design of nanostructures. The elastic modulus of beam is assumed to vary through the thickness or longitudinal directions according to the power law. The governing equations are derived by using the nonlocal continuum theory incorporated with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The explicit solutions are derived for the static behavior of the transversely or axially FG beams with various boundary conditions. The verification of the model is obtained by comparing the current results with previously published works and a good agreement is observed. Numerical results are presented to show the significance of the nonlocal effect, the material distribution profile, the boundary conditions, and the length of beams on the bending behavior of nonlocal FG beams.

This paper considers dynamic impedance functions and presents a detailed analysis of the soil plasticity influence on the pile-group foundation dynamic response. A three-dimensional finite element model is proposed, and a calculation method considering the time domain is detailed for the nonlinear dynamic impedance functions. The soil mass is modeled as continuum elastoplastic solid using the Mohr-Coulomb shear failure criterion. The piles are modeled as continuum solids and the slab as a structural plate-type element. Quiet boundaries are implemented to avoid wave reflection on the boundaries. The model and method of analysis are validated by comparison with those published on literature. Numerical results are presented in terms of horizontal and vertical nonlinear dynamic impedances as a function of the shear soil parameters (cohesion and internal friction angle), pile spacing ratio and frequencies of the dynamic signal.
In this paper, we present a new method to calculate interface warping functions for the analysis of beams with geometric and material discontinuities in the longitudinal direction. The classical Saint Venant torsion theory is extended to a three-dimensional domain by considering the longitudinal direction. The interface warping is calculated by considering both adjacent cross-sections of a given interface. We also propose a finite element procedure to simultaneously calculate the interface warping function and the corresponding twisting center. The calculated interface warping functions are employed in the continuum-mechanics based beam formulation to analyze arbitrary shape cross-section beams with longitudinal discontinuities. Compared to the previous work by Yoon and Lee (2014a), both geometric and material discontinuities are considered with fewer degrees of freedom and higher accuracy in beam finite element analysis. Through various numerical examples, the effectiveness of the proposed interface warping function is demonstrated.

A Xe plasma flat lamp, which has been noticed as a new eco-friendly LCD (liquid crystal display) backlight, requires the improvement of the luminance and the luminous efficiency although it has several advantages. To improve the performance of a lamp, it is necessary to understand the effects of discharge variables on the luminous characteristics of the lamp. Since it is difficult to diagnose a lamp discharge experimentally, the numerical analysis can be used instead. In this study, the luminous characteristics of a planar type Xe plasma flat lamp were analyzed with the variation of an input voltage and a pulse frequency. The numerical analysis of a lamp discharge was then performed using a RCT (relaxation continuum) model and a LFA (local field approximation) model. The comparison with the experimental results showed that the RCT model is valid for the numerical analysis of the flat lamp. The numerical analysis also showed that the modifications of a high frequency component and a voltage falling rate in the input voltage waveform could improve the luminous characteristics of the lamp.
An improved analysis model for material nonlinearity induced by elasto-plastic deformation and damage including a large strain response was proposed. The elasto-plastic-damage constitutive model based on the continuum damage mechanics approach was adopted to overcome limitations of the conventional plastic analysis theory. It can manage the anisotropic tonsorial damage evolved during the time-independent plastic deformation process of materials. Updated Lagrangian finite element formulation for elasto-plastic damage coupling problems including large deformation, large rotation and large strain problems was completed to develop a numerical model which can predict all kinds of structural nonlinearities and damage rationally. Finally a finite element analysis code for two-dimensional plane problems was developed and the applicability and validity of the numerical model was investigated through some numerical examples. Calculations showed reasonable results in both geometrical nonlinear problems due to large deformation and material nonlinearity including the damage effect.
