The continuous sliding mode controller with disturbance observer for the tracking control of permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM) is presented. In spite of the robust performance of variable structure control, there exists an undesirable chattering problem, which may be very harmful in some cases. To alleviate the problem, continuous sliding mode controller with continuous saturation function is proposed and also the prescribed performance can be obtained by efficient compensation of disturbance. Experimental results using 7.5 kW, 4000 rpm motor which is controlled by TMS320C30 DSP, are shown to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed algorithm.
In general, to reduce chattering in sliding mode control, a boundary layer around the sliding surface is used, and a continuous control is applied within the boundary. In this paper we propose the design method of sliding mode controller with sliding sector. To do this, the variable structure controller is designed for the linear system with uncertainty using sliding sector. The control law designed in the paper transfers the system state from outside to the inside of the sliding sector and ensures that some norm of the system state keeps decreasing.
This article explores the speed regulation problem of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) systems subjected to unknown time-varying disturbances. A continuous sliding mode control (CSMC) technique is introduced for the speed loop to enhance the robustness of PMSM systems and eliminate the chattering phenomenon caused by high-frequency switch function in the conventional control law. However, the high control gain of the CSMC law in the presence of strong disturbances leads to large steady-state speed fluctuations for PMSM systems. In many application fields, PMSM systems are affected by time-varying disturbances instead of constant disturbances. For example, electric bicycles are usually affected by changing environmental disturbances, including wind speeds, road conditions, etc. These disturbances may be in the form of constant, ramp, and parabolic disturbances. Hence, a generalized proportional integral (GPI) observer is employed to estimate these types of disturbances. Then, the disturbance estimation method and the aforementioned CSMC method are combined to establish a composite sliding mode control method called the CSMC+GPI method for the speed loop of PMSM systems. Contrary to the conventional sliding mode control technique, the proposed method completely eliminates the chattering phenomenon caused by the switching function in the conventional control law. Moreover, a small control gain for the CSMC+GPI method is chosen by feed-forwarding estimated values to the speed controller. Hence, the steady-state speed fluctuations are small. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified by simulation and experimental result.

In this paper, an improved integral variable structure regulation controller is designed by using a special integral sliding surface and a disturbance observer for the improved regulation control of highly nonlinear rigid robot manipulators with prescribed output performance. The sliding surface having the integral state with a special initial condition is employed in this paper to exactly predetermine the ideal sliding trajectory from a given initial condition to the desired reference without any reaching phase. And a continuous sliding mode input using the disturbance observer is also introduced in order to effectively follow the predetermined sliding trajectory within the prescribed accuracy without large computation burden. The performance of the prescribed tracking accuracy to the predetermined sliding trajectory is clearly investigated in detail through the two theorems, together with the closed loop stability. The design of the proposed regulation controller is separated into the performance design and robustness design in each independent link. The usefulness of the algorithm has been demonstrated through simulation studies on the regulation control of a two-link robot under parameter uncertainties and payload variations.
A position control system of D.C. Servo motor based on discrete variable structure system with sliding mode is presented. The sliding mode has been designed for a continuous system, but it is often realized in digital fashion because the complex switching logic can be easily carried out. In digital control system, the ideal sliding mode does not occur since the structure can't be switched during sampling interval. However, there can be exist a motion which is confined to a regoin including the sliding surface and proceeds to the origin along the surface. This notion is called quasisliding mode. In this paper, we introduce this control scheme to the D.C. Servo motor position control in order to reduce the chattering phenonenon.
To reduce chattering in sliding mode control, a boundary layer around the sliding surface is used, and a continuous control is applied within the boundary. In this paper, a method of determining the sliding mode controller switching gains and the width of boundary layer is presented. Contrary to the trial and error selection of the switching gains and the width of boundary layer, the selection in the presented work is done using genetic algorithms. Simulation results show that the system performance has been improved.
In this paper a DSP based control scheme for the interleaved boost converter is presented. The mathematical model for the interleaved boost converter operating in a continuous inductor current mode is developed. A state-space averaging technique is used for modeling the converter system. A fixed frequency sliding mode controller is designed to ensure current distribution between the two converter modules and to achieve the load voltage regulation simultaneously. Necessary and sufficient conditions, using variable structure theory, are derived for the sliding mode to exist. The range of sliding mode controller coefficients is also determined. The designed controller capability, load distribution among the individual boost cells and load voltage regulation against source and load disturbances, are demonstrated through PSIM simulation results. A real-time controller based on ADMC401 DSP is developed. Experimental results are provided to validate the proposed control scheme.
This paper presents the regulation of the output voltage and inductor currents in a Single Ended Primary Inductor Converter (SEPIC), operating in the continuous conduction mode (CCM) using a sliding mode controller. Owing to the time varying nature of the SEPIC converter, designing a feedback controller is a challenging task. In order to improve the dynamic performance of the SEPIC, a Sliding Mode Controller (SMC) is developed. The developed SMC is designed by using a state space average model. The performance of the developed controller with the SEPIC converter is validated at different working conditions through Matlab simulations. It is also compared with the performance while using a PI controller. The results show that the designed controller gives very good output voltage regulation under different operating conditions such as a varying input voltage, changes in the load and component variations. A 48V, 46W experimental setup for has been developed in an analog platform to validate the performance of the proposed SMC.

In this paper, we propose an AFDO (Adaptive Fault Diagnosis Observer) and a fault tolerant controller for a class of nonlinear continuous-time system under the nonlinear abrupt actuator faults. Together with its estimation laws, the AFDO which estimates that the actuator faults is designed by using the Lyapunov analysis. Then, based on the designed AFDO, an adaptive sliding mode controller is proposed as the fault tolerant controller. Using Lyapunov stability analysis, we also prove the uniform boundedness of the state, the output and the fault estimation errors, and the asymptotic stability of the tracking error under the nonlinear time-varying faults. Finally, we illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed diagnosis method and the control scheme thorough computer simulations.
A new approach of a time-varying switching hyperplane based on the theory of variable structure system (VSS) is proposed for the control of multivariable systems. While the conventional switching surface can net achieve the robust performance against parameter variations and disturbances before the sliding mode occurs, the proposed switching hyperplane, which is obtained from the eigen-structure assignment theory powerfully used in the linear multivariable systems, ensures the sliding mode from the initial state. And new continuous control input which guarantees the sliding mode is proposed. This new control input does not arise chattering problem which arises with the conventional control input of variable structure control systems. Through numerical examples, the expellant performances of the proposed controller are verified.
