We have investigated the self-assembled structures of glutaric acid (HOOC-(CH2)3-COOH) on the Cu(110) surface as a function of coverage using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM). At low coverage, glutaric acid molecules diffuse freely on Cu(110) surface at room temperature, thus they can't form ordered structures at this coverage. However, when we scanned the same area several times, novel structures have been created during scanning due to the field-induced self-assembly. Also, the induced structures are quite stable during continuous scanning process. At 0.25 ML, glutaric acid adsorbs as a bi-glutarate (-OOC(CH2)3-COO-) after annealing to 450 K producing a racemic conglomerate of coexisting mirror domains. Although the molecule is achiral, it forms chiral domains on the surface from adsorption-induced asymmetrization. At 0.5 ML coverage, zigzag structure is observed, and still gltutaric acid adsorbs as a bidentate configuration. This bi-glutarate structure is stable until 650. Finally, at 1ML, glutaric acid adsorbs as a mono-glutarate at room temperature forming close packed structures.
Terrestrial Laser Scanning(TLS) was developed at the mid-to-late 1990s. This technique enables to perform reconnaissance surveying of regions or structures hard to access. Besides, TLS has been extended its application gradually such as preservation of historical remains, underground surveys, slopes, glaciers monitoring and so on. However, though the technique has a lot of advantages, an application for structural health and safety monitoring is a beginning stage and it need much research. Therefore in this study, as a groundwork, the estimation model on stress of structures using TLS and Finite Element Method(FEM) applied by the Digital Elevation Model(DEM) technique of geoinformatics is proposed. For the verification of this model, experiments were performed with a continuous steel beam subjected to point loads and outputs were compared with those of electrical strain sensors.
Structural and thermal characteristics of silk fibroin/poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)(PHEMA) blend films were investigated using FTIR, X-ray diffractometer, differential scanning calorimeter, thermogravimeter and scanning electron microscope. FTIR spectra showed that the conformation of silk fibroin prepared by dissolving in formic acid was $\beta$-sheet, which did not affected by blending with PHEMA. The X-ray diffraction patterns also showed that individual crystalline structure of silk fibroin and PHEMA was not affected for the blend films. The initial thermal decomposition temperature of silk fibroin/PHEMA blend film tends to be higher than either of silk fkbroin or PHEMA. Thermal stability of both polymers, more notably PHEMA, can be improved by blending two components. As a result of SEM observation, the phases separation for silk fibroin/PHEMA blend films occured regardless of blend ratio ; continuous and dispersed phase were silk fibroin and PHEMA component, respectively.
This paper deals with the vibration deflection shape measurement technique for a sinusoidally excited structure using a continuously scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (CSLV). The CSLV output signal is an amplitude-modulated vibration in which the excitation signal is modulated by the deflection shapes, and thus the deflection shapes of vibration defined along a scan line can be derived by the envelop and the phase information of the CSLV output signal. In this work, a Hilbert transform based approach has been proposed for measurement of deflection shapes. This technique is as simple as the demodulation technique and allows more convenient experimental settings than the Fourier transform approach. The feasibility of the proposed technique is illustrated along with results of experiment.
Experiments were conducted to investigate the sensitivity of steel plate oxidation with temperature in a simulated furnace. Used steel plates were a general steel and a high tensile steel. Porous media burner (PM burner) used in model furnace was made for uniform temperature profile. The surrounding temperature was controlled by adjusting the flow rate of the mixture in the combustor. Oxide layer analysis was performed using SEM image analysis and EDS line scanning. Both steel sheets showed a tendency to increase the thickness of the steel sheet surface oxide layer as the temperature increases, and it was confirmed that the flaking phenomenon in surface oxidation layer appeared when the temperature was above a certain temperature.
A marine bacterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa BYK-2 KCTC 18012P was immobilized in modified polyvinyl alcohol for the continuous production of rhamnolipids. The stability of rhamnolipids production, the mechanical strength of beads and the scanning electron microscope of immobilized cell were determined in a repeated batch culture. The rhamnolipids production was maintained $80{\sim}90%$ stability of initial production, and the mechanical strength also was stable during the repeated batch culture more than 14 cycles. In the case of SEM studies, the internal distribution pattern of the cell entrapped in modified PVA beads was observed. On the basis of optimal conditions, the continuous culture was investigated in 1.8L air lift bioreactor. The result suggested 0.1g/h rhamnolipids was obtained from 1%(v/v) fish oil continuously in conditions of 1.2L working volume, 0.5vvm and 20ml/h flow rate.
Usually vibration properties are obtained from frequency response functions or impulse response functions of a system. Since the contact type sensors can affect the characteristics of vibrating systems, the non-contact type sensors such as laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) are being widely used. Currently researches are being carried out in terms of modal analysis using a scanning vibrometer. For the continuous scan; the Chebyshev demodulation (or polynomial) is apparently suggested to extract the mode shapes. With single frequency sinusoidal excitation, this approach is well fitted. In this research, the Chebyshev demodulation technique has been applied to the impact excitation case. The vibration of the tested structure is modeled using impulse response functions. The technique is also adopted to the random excitation case. In order to verify the technique, a simply supported beam was chosen as the test rig. The calculation modules are developed by using MATLAB$\^$(R)/ in WindowsNT$\^$(R)/ environment.
A strain of Leptospira interrogans(UM-19) was isolated in 1984 from a patient with epidemic pulmonary hemorrhagic fever. The bacteria has been characterized morphologically by a polymorphism showing spiral forms, short and long rods in culture. In order to study the biological relatedness among these forms of the bacteria, the short rods were separated from others by means of continuous sucrose density gradient centrifugation, and cultured at various temperatures such as $10^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$ and $37^{\circ}C$. It was revealed that cultivation or subcultivation of the short rods has resulted in morphological changes observed by darkfield examination, silver stain, and scanning electron microscope showing spiral forms as well as short and long rods.
Polymer thin films were prepared by radio frequency (RF) plasma polymerization of phthalic anhydride (PA). First, monomer vaporization temperature ($100{\sim}160^{\circ}C$) was optimized by evaluating the thermal properties of thin films using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and measuring the root-mean-square (RMS) roughness with atomic force microscope (AFM) at the fixed plasma power of 10 W and time of 5 min in a continuous-wave (CW) mode. Plasma power (5~20 W) was then optimized by measuring the film solubility in solvents such as toluene, acetone, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and 1 methylpyrrolidine (NMP). Next, pulsed mode plasma polymerization was also studied by varying the duty cycle of on-time (5, 20%) under optimized conditions of continuous-wave (CW) mode ($120^{\circ}C$, 10 W) in order to increase the anhydride functional groups. Finally, polymer thin films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and ${\alpha}$-step.
Activated carbons were used to examine their performance for the separation of undesirable colored materials from culture broth containing hyaluronic acid. Six local samples and a NORIT ROX 08 were tested, whereas the latter was mainly studied under batch and continuous modes. The optimal wavelength for the detection of colored materials was 330nm. The optimal choice of NORIT ROX 08 provided 30% colored residuals with 96% hyaluronic acid recovery of original broth in batch experiments. The nonlinear adsorption behavior of protein and colored materials with activated carbon (C) was correlated by a Langmuir equation to give 18C/24+C and 500C/892+C for protein and colored materials, respectively. It appears that colored materials were composed of 78% protein and 22% glucose residuals on the basis of clearance results. A microscopic study using a scanning electron microscope suggests that regeneration of used activated carbon with 0.1N NaOH and hot water was not satisfactory. The present study proposes that the continuous monitoring of colored materials during purification can be accomplished by Installation of a UV monitor commonly used for continuous detection of protein during the process, as resulted from the significant correlation of color (A330)=0.353protein(mg/ml)+0.1(R=99.7%).
