Strip Tension Control Considering the Temperature Change in Multi-Span Systems

  • The mathematical model for tension behaviors of a moving web by Shin (2000) is extended to the tension model considering the thermal strain due to temperature variation in furnace. The extended model includes the terms that take into account the effect of the change of the Young's Modulus, the thermal coefficient, and the thermal strain on the variation of strip tension. Computer simulation study proved that the extended tension model could be used to analyze tension behaviors even when the strip goes through temperature variation. By using the extended tension model, a new tension control method is suggested in this paper. The key factors of suggested tension control method include that the thermal strain of strip could be compensated by using the velocity adjustment of the helper-rollers. The computer simulation was carried out to confirm the performance of the suggested tension control method. Simulation results show that the suggested tension control logic not only overcomes the problem of the traditional tension control logic, but also improves the performance of tension control in a furnace of the CAL (Continuous Annealing Line).

  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the sensitivity of steel plate oxidation with temperature in a simulated furnace. Used steel plates were a general steel and a high tensile steel. Porous media burner (PM burner) used in model furnace was made for uniform temperature profile. The surrounding temperature was controlled by adjusting the flow rate of the mixture in the combustor. Oxide layer analysis was performed using SEM image analysis and EDS line scanning. Both steel sheets showed a tendency to increase the thickness of the steel sheet surface oxide layer as the temperature increases, and it was confirmed that the flaking phenomenon in surface oxidation layer appeared when the temperature was above a certain temperature.

  • Investigation of alkali activation of fly ash and blast furnace slag was carried out using waterglass and sodium hydroxide. XRD, FTIR, $^{29}Si$ and $^{27}Al$ NMR, TGA and SEM were used to observed the reaction products and microstructure of the fly ash/slag cement (FSC) pastes. The reaction products were amorphous or low-ordered calcium silicate hydrate and aluminosilicate gel produced from alkali activation of blast furnace slag and fly ash, respectively. On the basis of this investigation, waterglass solution with a modulus(Ms) of 1.0 and 1.2 is recommended for alkali activation of fly ash and blast furnace slag. Morphology of FSC pastes alkali-activated with Ms of 1.0 and 1.2 shows a more solid and continuous matrix due to restructuring of gel-like reaction products from alkali-activated fly ash and blast furnace slag together with another hydrolysis product(i.e., silica gel) from water glass.

  • In this work, the performance of various promoters was investigated used in $CO_2$ separation from the gases emitted from steel-making process using gas hydrate technology. The studied promoters are tetrahydrofuran (THF), propylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, which are all expected to form a structure II hydrate, and the target gases include $CO_2/N_2$ mixed gases ($CO_2/N_2$ = 20/80 and 40/60) and Blast Furnace Gas (BFG). The phase equilibrium points were measured when each promoter was added with various concentrations. For fast acquisition of abundant data, the "continuous" Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) method was employed. In addition, the crystal structure of each gas hydrate was analyzed by Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD).

  • Recently demand for large-capacity aluminum heat sinks has been increased as market for high power electricity expands and high-performance electronic products develop. While the brazed heat sinks are in particular preferred, it is almost impossible to manufacture them with an atmospheric continuous furnace due to insufficient heating rate and various thickness of the parent metals. Therefore, a new index batch furnace is developed and the process variables are optimized. Then, brazing efficiency and tensile stress are obtained for brazed parts of the heat sinks. Finally experiment as well as numerical analysis has been performed to compare thermal efficiency of the brazed heat sinks with that of the silicone-bonded heat sinks.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the crack reduction performance of blast furnace slag concrete mixed with expansive and swelling admixtures. As a basic performance test, various ingredients such as blast furnace slag fine powder (BFS), calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA), bentonite, and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) were used, and the results showed that bentonite showed superior performance compared to HPMC. Afterwards, a MOCK-UP test was conducted to evaluate cracking and drying shrinkage according to the mixing ratio. As a result, when bentonite and a small amount of calcium phosphate were added, drying shrinkage was reduced and cracking was reduced. In particular, a cement mixture consisting of 30 % BFS, 1 % bentonite, and 1 % calcium phosphate showed optimal crack-free performance. It is believed that BFS concrete will contribute to compensating for shrinkage through continuous expansion activity and can be used for field applications.

  • Chambers in a continuous furnace were designed. A chamber consists of inlets and outlets of nitrogen gas which is used to discharge burned gas and heating pipes (HP) which are used to keep temperature of fired materials at $1,300^{\circ}C$. Design variables were numbers of inlets and outlets, distance between floor and lower HP ($h_1$), distance between lower HP and fired materials ($h_2$), distance between fired materials and upper HP ($h_3$), temperature of HP, numbers of HP and distance between HP. The numbers of inlets and outlets were determined so that nitrogen gas formed a laminar flow for efficient discharge. All other design variables were determined so that temperature of fired materials is as uniform as possible near $1,300^{\circ}C$. Chambers were produced and temperature was measured at 21 points using thermocouples. The largest deviation from $1,300^{\circ}C$ was less than ${\pm}2.2^{\circ}C$.

  • The horizontal high energy rotor ball mill ($Simoloyer^{(R)}$) is used to break and activate dry solids. It is used for dry-milling and in the vertical mount for wet-milling in leaching processes. Technical electric arc furnace (EAF) dust with high contents of zinc oxide, zinc ferrite and magnetite is efficiently separated by ambient temperature leaching.   • In this study, microstructure, size of primary $\alpha$, solid fraction and hardness of A356 Al alloy, were investigated. Semi-solid A356 allos were obtained by semi-solid continuous casting apparatus consists of melting furnace, formation apparatus of granular primary $\alpha$ and continuous casting apparatus. Size of promary $\alpha$ and fraction solid were decreased with decreasing temperature, and with increasing volume of cooling water. At the cooling water temperature of 15$^{\circ}C$ and cooling water volume of 18.2$\ell$/min, the sizes of primary $\alpha$ phases were decreased up to 40${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and fraction solid was 0.68.

A Numerical Study on the Efficiency of an Industrial Furnace for Oxygen Combustion Conditions (산소부화용 공업로의 운전조건이 열효율에 미치는 영향)

  • After a reheating furnace installation, the modification of the size and the heat capacity is very difficult. Therefore, the development of design package tool is required for the computation on the correct specifications before the design and the installation. Prior to development of the design tool, a module that calculates the amount of heat loss of each part according to the specifications for determining the thermal efficiency of a continuous heating furnace was developed and applied to the oxy-fuel industrial furnace. Through this, the effects of fuel type, oxygen fraction and recirculation on the efficiency of the furnace of which the output is 110Ton/hour were analyzed. In oxy-fuel combustion condition, the efficiency was 15% higher than air combustion conditions. With the using COG(Coke Oven Gas) instead of LNG, the efficiency was slightly increased. In the air combustion condition, the efficiency was increased about 33% with the preheated air. But, in oxy-fuel condition, the amount of exhaust gas was reduced, so the efficiency was increased about 7%.
