The paper presents quasi-static numerical simulations of the behaviour of short reinforced concrete beams without shear reinforcement under mixed shear-tension failure using the FEM and four various constitutive continuum models for concrete. First, an isotropic elasto-plastic model with a Drucker-Prager criterion defined in compression and with a Rankine criterion defined in tension was used. Next, an anisotropic smeared crack and isotropic damage model were applied. Finally, an elasto-plastic-damage model was used. To ensure mesh-independent FE results, to describe strain localization in concrete and to capture a deterministic size effect, all models were enhanced in a softening regime by a characteristic length of micro-structure by means of a non-local theory. Bond-slip between concrete and reinforcement was considered. The numerical results were directly compared with the corresponding laboratory tests performed by Walraven and Lehwalter (1994). The advantages and disadvantages of enhanced models to model the reinforced concrete behaviour were outlined.
Steady and dynamic shear properties of two hydrophobically modified alkali soluble emulsions (HASE), NPJI and NPJ2, were experimentally investigated. At the same polymer concentration, NPJ1 is appreciably more viscous and elastic than NPJ2. The high hydrophobicity of NPJ1 allows hydrophobic associations and more junction sites to be created, leading to the formation of a network structure. Under shear deformation, NPJ1 exhibits shear-thinning behaviour as compared with Newtonian characteristics of NPJ2. NPJ1 and NPJ2 exhibit a very high and a low level of elasticity respectively over the frequency range tested. For NPJ1, a crossover frequency appears, which is shifted to lower frequencies and hence, longer relaxation times, as concentration increases. Three different surfactants anionic SDS, cationic CTAB, and non-ionic TX-100 were employed to examine the effects of surfactants on the rheology of HASE. Due to the different ionic behaviour of the surfactant, each type of surfactant imposed different electrostatic interactions on the two HASE polymers. In general, at low surfactant concentration, a gradual increase in viscosity is observed until a maximum is reached, beyond which a continuous reduction of viscosity ensues. Viscosity development is a combined result of HASE-surfactant interactions, accompanied by constant rearrangement of the hydrophobic associative junctions, and electrostatic interactions.

The dynamic behaviour of a four-span continuous girder railway bridge subjected to multiple support excitations is investigated using the response spectrum method. Small-amplitude oscillations and linear-elastic material behaviour are assumed. Soil-structure interaction effects are disregarded and only the out-of-plane response of the bridge is considered. The results of the response spectrum analysis are compared with those from a time history analysis. Different combination rules for the superposition of modal maxima as well as supports are employed, such as square-root-of-sum-squares, double sum and p-norm methods.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the nutrition education on the nutrition knowledge, eating behaviour and nutrient intake of the children. Questionnaire and dietary record were executed to 105 children in the 4th and 5th grade in elementary school with nutrition education and 107 in the same grade without nutrition education. The results were as follows; In nutrition aspect, higher acknowledgement and precision level was observed(p<0.001) in the educated group. Higher practice will of nutrition knowledge, lower rate of skipping meal, better appetite were also observed in the educated group. In the aspect of food group intake, meatㆍfishㆍegg, tofu and bean, fruits, milk and milk products intake frequency were higher in the educated group. Most nutrient intake except fat and vitamin B₂ were observed to be higher in the educated group. Therefore, it was concluded that continuous nutrition education was recommended in order to put positive effect on the eating behaviour and nutrient intake of the children.
The new structure consisting of continuous compound spiral hoop reinforced concrete (CCSHRC)column and steel concrete composite (SCC) beam has both the advantages of steel structures and concrete structures. Two types of beam-to-column connections applied in this structural system are presented in this paper. The connection details are as follows: the main bars in beam concrete pass through the core zone for both types of connections. For connecting bar connection, the steel I-beam webs are connected by bolts to a steel plate passing through the joint while the top and bottom flanges of the beams are connected by four straight and two X-shaped bars. For bolted end-plate connection, the steel I-beam webs are connected by stiffened extended end-plates and eight long shank bolts passing through the core zone. In order to study the seismic behaviour and failure mechanisms of the connections, quasi-static tests were conducted on both types of full-scale connection subassemblies and core zone specimens. The load-drift hysteresis loops show a plateau for the connecting bar connection while they are excellent plump for bolted end-plate connection. The shear capacity formulas of both types of connections are presented and the values calculated by the formula agree well with the test results.
The greenschist in the Jinping II Hydropower Station in southwest China exhibits continuous creep behaviour because of the geological conditions in the region. This phenomenon illustrates the time-dependent deformation and progressive damage that occurs after excavation. In this study, the responses of greenschist to stress over time were determined in a series of laboratory tests on samples collected from the access tunnel walls at the construction site. The results showed that the greenschist presented time-dependent behaviour under long-term loading. The samples generally experienced two stages: transient creep and steady creep, but no accelerating creep. The periods of transient creep and steady creep increased with increasing stress levels. The long-term strength of the greenschist was identified based on the variation of creep strain and creep rate. The ratio of long-term strength to conventional strength was around 80% and did not vary much with confining pressures. A quantitative method for predicting the failure period of greenschist, based on analysis of the stress-strain curve, is presented and implemented. At a confining pressure of 40 MPa, greenschist was predicted to fail in 5000 days under a stress of 290 MPa and to fail in 85 days under the stress of 320 MPa, indicating that the long-term strength identified by the creep rate and creep strain is a reliable estimate.
This work examines the characterization and corrosion behaviour of laser alloyed UNSG10150 steel with three different premixed composition Zn-Sn binary powders using a 4.4 kW continuous wave (CW) Rofin Sinar Nd:YAG laser processing system. The steel alloyed samples were cut to corrosion coupons, immersed in sulphuric acid (0.5 M H2SO4) solution at 30℃ using electrochemical technique and investigated for its corrosion behaviour. The morphologies and microstructures of the developed coated and uncoated samples were characterized by Optic Nikon Optical microscope (OPM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM/EDS). Moreover, X-ray diffractometer (XRD) was used to identify the phases present. An enhancement of 2.7-times the hardness of the steel substrate was achieved in sample A1 which may be attributed to the fine microstructure, dislocations and the high degree of saturation of solid solution brought by the high scanning speed. At scanning speed of 0.8 m/min, sample A1 exhibited the highest polarization resistance Rp (1081678 Ωcm2 ), lowest corrosion current density icorr (4.81×10−8A/cm2 ), and lowest corrosion rate Cr (0.0005 mm/year) in 0.5 M H2SO4. The polarization resistance Rp (1081678 Ωcm2 ) is 67,813-times the polarization of the UNSG10150 substrate and 99.9972% reduction in the corrosion rate.

RC Transfer girders play an important role which transfer large amount of load from the upper structure to the weak lower colomns. To understand the behaviour of these RC transfer girders, 1:2.5 scaled test, experimental and analytical studies were performed. In this study, based on this experimental and analytical studies on nonlinear behaviour of RC transfer girders, finite element analyses were performed using same conditions of the previous studies$^{(1),(2)}$ which were unable to perform owing to the limitations on experiment. Analyses showed resonable results for the boundary conditions and infinite possibilities to overcome limitations on experiments, also. Through the analysis results, we could reach such a conclusion that general boundary condition alone can not reflect the experiment properly. This conclusion might enhancing the former study$^{(2)}$ indirectly. But there still exist the needs for the further study.

The extension of existing RC buildings is a challenging process, which requires efficient connection between existing and new materials to guarantee load transferring between the lap-spliced longitudinal columns' reinforcement. Therefore, the length of the columns' starter bars is a crucial factor, which decisively affects the seismic response of the new columns. In particular, when the length of the starter bars is short, then the length of the lap splices of reinforcement is inadequate to ensure load transfer between steel bars and concrete, with an indisputable detrimental impact on the seismic behaviour of the columns. Moreover, in most of the existing RC buildings the column starter bars are of particularly short length, while they have probably been bent, cut or corroded. In the present study, the effectiveness of both welded rebar and mechanical splices of reinforcement in ensuring load transferring between the starter bars and the longitudinal reinforcement of the new column was experimentally evaluated. Four cantilever column subassemblages were constructed and subjected to earthquake-type loading. Three of the specimens were used to examine different types of shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), while in the fourth subassemblage mechanical splices were tested. The hysteretic response of the columns was evaluated and compared to the behaviour of a fifth specimen with continuous reinforcement, tested by Kalogeropoulos and Tsonos (2019). Test results clearly demonstrated that the examined types of SMAW were equally satisfactory in ensuring the ductile seismic performance of the columns, while the mechanical splices found to be more susceptible to exhibit slipping of the bars.
Many codes allow designers to use the bending moment diagram computed by elastic analysis and modify it by a certain amount of moment redistribution (MR) to account for plastic behaviour of continuous beams. However, several researchers indicated that the MR at the ultimate limit state (𝛽u) for some beams deviate significantly from the specified values of various codes. This paper examines the applicability of the provisions on 𝛽u in ACI 318-19 and Eurocode 2 through numerical investigations and comprehensively explores the influencing factors. The results show that some parameters not considered in those codes influence 𝛽u to a certain extent, where the ratio of tensile reinforcement ratio at intermediate support to tensile reinforcement ratio at midspan (𝜌s1/𝜌s2) and load type are crucial parameters to consider. The specific combination of these two parameters may make the codes overestimate or significantly underestimate the 𝛽u. On the other hand, the yield state of both critical sections is found to have an important influence on the influence degree of each parameter on 𝛽u. The yield conditions are investigated, and an empirical judgment equation is proposed. In addition, the influence laws of the critical parameters on 𝛽u have been further proved by theoretical derivation. Finally, due to 𝜀t is found to have a better linear correlation with 𝛽u than xu/d, equations as a function of 𝜀t for predicting the 𝛽u of continuous beams under the two loads are proposed, respectively.
