Boundary Control of Axially Moving Continua: Application to a Zinc Galvanizing Line

  • In this paper, an active vibration control of a tensioned, elastic, axially moving string is investigated. The dynamics of the translating string are described with a non-linear partial differential equation coupled with an ordinary differential equation. A right boundary control to suppress the transverse vibrations of the translating continuum is proposed. The control law is derived via the Lyapunov second method. The exponential stability of the closed-loop system is verified. The effectiveness of the proposed control law is simulated.

ABSOLUTE SPECTROPHOTOMETRY OF SOME GALACTIC WOLF-RAYET STARS: EFFECTIVE TEMPERATURES AND BOLOMETRIC CORRECTIONS

  • The absolute measurements of fluxes in the region ${\lambda}{\lambda}3,100-8,090\;{\AA}$ emitted in the visible continua of some galactic Wolf-Rayet stars are presented. These observations were made by a two-channel scanner which was built up cooperatively by the Observatoire of Lyon and the Laboratoire d'Astronomie Spatiale. The fluxes, dereddened from those data, were combined with IUE and ANS ultraviolet measurements. These fluxes were compared with those of LTE plane paralleled model atmospheres of Kurucz (1979) and were also integrated in order to derive effective temperatures and bolometric corrections for the program stars. The derived effective temperatures and bolometric corrections for the stars were in the range of $25,000\;K{\sim}32,700\;K$, and of $-2.5\;mag.{\sim}-3.7\;mag.$, respectively.

Near-IR Radiative Transfer Process for the Hazy Atmosphere of Titan

  • Radiative transfer programs have been developed to simulate near-IR spectra of Titan. The formalism of the radiative transfer calculations includes the absorption and emission lines of $CH_4$, $C_2H_2$, $C_2H_6$, and HCN, and continua produced by Titanian haze particles. Absorption and scattering of sunlight by haze particles are considered by employing a two-stream approximation and a spherical-shell model for the atmospheric layers of Titan. Various constraints on the radiative transfer calculations for generating synthetic spectra will be discussed and presented. Several examples of comparisons between the synthetic spectra and recent spectral observations of Titan will also be presented.

On the consideration of the masses of helical springs in damped combined systems consisting of two continua

  • This study is concerned with the establishment of the characteristic equation of a combined system consisting of a cantilever beam with a tip mass and an in-span visco-elastic helical spring-mass, considering the mass of the helical spring. After obtaining the "exact" characteristic equation of the combined system, by making use of a boundary value problem formulation, the characteristic equation is established via a transfer matrix method, as well. Further, the characteristic equation of a reduced system is obtained as a special case. Then, the characteristic equations are numerically solved for various combinations of the physical parameters. Further, comparison of the results with the massless spring case and the case in which the spring mass is partially considered, reveals the fact that neglecting or considering the mass of the spring partially can cause considerable errors for some combinations of the physical parameters of the system.

  • The present work extends the recent variational formulation to more general time-dependent problems. Thus, based upon recent works of variational formulation in dynamics and pure heat diffusion in the context of the extended framework of Hamilton's principle, formulation for fully coupled thermoelasticity is developed first, then, with thermoelasticity-poroelasticity analogy, poroelasticity formulation is provided. For each case, energy conservation and energy dissipation properties are discussed in Fourier transform domain.

  • A 50-year-old female patient with severe unilateral pain in the right eye, head, and face accompanied by lacrimation and drooping of the right eye and rhinorrhea from the right nose, which developed immediately after extraction of the maxillary right first and second molars, was successfully treated with oral administration of sumatriptan and prednisolone, or verapamile. Although the clinical characteristics are similar to those reported in cluster headache except the temporal feature, the probable cluster headache, the hemicrania continua and the acute migraine headache should be included in the list of differential diagnoses.

  • The lining segment which is the main structure of the shield tunnel consists of joints, not continua. Past international and domestic design data have been commonly used for design practices without specific verification about the structural analysis model, design load, and affection of the soil constant of the lining segment. In this study, the propriety is estimated through the comparison between analytical solution and numerical solution for segment analysis and design models of the shield tunnel which is being used internationally and domestically. As a result, the full. circumferential beam jointed spring model (1R-S0) is suggested by considering aspects of convenient use, application to field condition, and accuracy of analysis result. With suggested model, the parameter analysis was conducted for joint stiffness, ground rigidity, joint distribution, and joint number.

  • In the analysis of deformation in which the stiffness is greatly different between the adjacent materials, the desired results have been obtained by using the interface element method compared with those secured by the conventional method of the concept of continua. This study deals with the deformation analysis of soft foundation by the introduction of interface element. The physical conditions of interface element are divided into three categories by Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion ie. sliding, separation, and contact. Finally the accuracy of the program proposed in this paper is proved highly accurate by performing the comparison of the theoretical values numerical results of a model element with simplified boundary conditions.

THE LYMAN-CONTINUUM LUMINOSITIES OF OB-TYPE STARS (OB형 별의 라이먼 연속 복사의 광도)

  • We are often faced with the task of having to estimate the hydrogen and helium ionizing luminosities of massive stars in the study of H II regions and the warm ionized medium (WIM). Using the results of the most complete compilation of stellar parameters (the effective temperature, stellar radius and surface gravity) and the latest Kurucz stellar atmosphere models, we calculate the ionizing photon luminosities in the $H^0\;and\;He^0$ continua from O3 to B5 stars. We compared the theoretical Lyman-continuum luminosity with the observationally inferred luminosity of the H II region around ${\alpha}$ Vir, and found that the theoretical value is higher than the observed value in contrast to the eariler result.

Transient analysis of monopile foundations partially embedded in liquefied soil

  • In this study, the authors present a coupled fluid-structures-seabed interaction analysis of a monopile type of wind turbine foundations in liquefiable soils. A two dimensional analysis is performed with a nonlinear stiffness degradation model incorporated in the finite difference program Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC), which captured the fundamental mechanisms of the monopiles in saturated granular soil. The effects of inertia and the kinematic flow of soil are investigated separately, to highlight the importance of considering the combined effect of these phenomena on the seismic design of offshore monopiles. Different seismic loads, such as those experienced in the Kobe, Santa Cruz, Loma Prieta, Kocaeli, and Morgan Hill earthquakes, are analyzed. The pore water pressure development, relative displacements, soil skeleton deformation and monopile bending moment are obtained for different predominant frequencies and peak accelerations. The findings are verified with results in the liter.
