  • In this paper, we describe a morpheme-based pronunciation lexicon useful for Korean LVCSR. The phonemic-context-dependent multiple pronunciation lexicon improves the recognition accuracy when cross-morpheme pronunciation variations are distinguished from within-morpheme pronunciation variations. Since adding all possible pronunciation variants to the lexicon increases the lexicon size and confusability between lexical entries, we have developed a lexicon pruning scheme for optimal selection of pronunciation variants to improve the performance of Korean LVCSR. By building a proposed pronunciation lexicon, an absolute reduction of $0.56\%$ in WER from the baseline performance of $27.39\%$ WER is achieved by cross-morpheme pronunciation variations model with a phonemic-context-dependent multiple pronunciation lexicon. On the best performance, an additional reduction of the lexicon size by $5.36\%$ is achieved from the same lexical entries.

  • This paper presents a new transmembrane Protein topology prediction method which is an attempt to model the topological rules governing the topogenesis of transmembrane proteins. Context-dependent structural regions of the transmembrane protein are used as basic modeling units in order to effectively represent their topogenic roles during transmembrane protein assembly. These modeling units are modeled by means of a tied-state hidden Markov model, which can express the position-specific effect of amino acids during ransmembrane protein assembly. The performance of prediction improves with these modeling approaches. In particular, marked improvement of orientation prediction shows the validity of the proposed modeling. The proposed method is available at http://bioroutine.com/TRAPTOP.

  • For large vocabulary speech recognition using HMMs, context-dependent subword units have been often employed. However, when context-dependent phone models are used, they result in a system which has too may parameters to train. The problem of too many parameters and too little training data is absolutely crucial in the design of a statistical speech recognizer. Furthermore, when building large vocabulary speech recognition systems, unseen triphone problem is unavoidable. In this paper, we propose the modified phonetic decision tree algorithm for the automatic prediction of unseen triphones which has advantages solving these problems through following two experiments in Japanese contexts. The baseline experimental results show that the modified tree based clustering algorithm is effective for clustering and reducing the number of states without any degradation in performance. The task experimental results show that our proposed algorithm also has the advantage of providing a automatic prediction of unseen triphones.

  • Previous background generation techniques showed bad performance in complex environments since they used only temporal contexts. To overcome this problem, in this paper, we propose a new background generation method which incorporates spatial as well as temporal contexts of the image. This enabled us to obtain 'clean' background image with no moving objects. In our proposed method, first we divided the sampled frame into m*n blocks in the video sequence and classified each block as either static or non-static. For blocks which are classified as non-static, we used MRF framework to model them in temporal and spatial contexts. MRF framework provides a convenient and consistent way of modeling context-dependent entities such as image pixels and correlated features. Experimental results show that our proposed method is more efficient than the traditional one.

  • In this work, we consider a problem in the context of thermoelectric materials with memory-dependent derivative for a half space which is assumed to have variable thermal conductivity depending on the temperature. The Lamé's modulii of the half space material is taken as a function of the vertical distance from the surface of the medium. The surface is traction free and subjected to a time dependent thermal shock. The problem was solved by using the Laplace transform method together with the perturbation technique. The obtained results are discussed and compared with the solution when Lamé's modulii are constants. Numerical results are computed and represented graphically for the temperature, displacement and stress distributions. Affectability investigation is performed to explore the thermal impacts of a kernel function and a time-delay parameter that are characteristic of memory dependent derivative heat transfer in the behavior of tissue temperature. The correlations are made with the results obtained in the case of the absence of memory-dependent derivative parameters.

  • Diverse methods to evaluate the prediction model of a time to event have been proposed in the context of right censored data where all subjects are subject to be susceptible. A time-dependent AUC (area under curve) measures the predictive ability of a marker based on case group and control one which are varying over time. When a substantial portion of subjects are event-free, a population consists of a susceptible group and a cured one. An uncertain curability of censored subjects makes it difficult to define both case group and control one. In this paper, our goal is to propose a time-dependent AUC for a cure rate model when a censoring distribution is related with covariates. A class of inverse probability of censoring weighted (IPCW) AUC estimators is proposed to adjust the possible sampling bias. We evaluate the finite sample performance of the suggested methods with diverse simulation schemes and the application to the melanoma dataset is presented to compare with other methods.

  • The purpose of this paper is to show the clustering trend by using the context-dependent and measure-specific models for 38 Asian ports during 10 years(2001-2009) with 4 inputs and 1 output. The main empirical results of this paper are as follows. First, clustering results by using context-dependent and measure-specific models are same. Second, the most efficient clustering was shown among the Hong Kong, Singapore, Ningbo, Guangzhou, and Kaosiung ports. Third, Port Sultan Qaboos, Jeddah, and Aden ports showed the lowest level clustering. Fourth, ranking order of attractiveness is Guangzhou, Dubai, HongKong, Ningbo, and Shanghai, and the results of progressive scores confirmed that low level ports can increase their efficiency by benchmarking the upper level ports. Fifth, benchmark share showed that Dubai(birth length), and HongKong(port depth, total area, and no. of cranes) have affected the efficiency of the inefficient ports.

  • HMM-based Text-to-Speech systems generally utilize context dependent tri-phone units from a large corpus speech DB to enhance the synthetic speech. To downsize a large corpus speech DB, acoustically similar tri-phone units are clustered based on the decision tree using context dependent information. Context dependent information includes phoneme sequence as well as prosodic information because the naturalness of synthetic speech highly depends on the prosody such as pause, intonation pattern, and segmental duration. However, if the prosodic information was complicated, many context dependent phonemes would have no examples in the training data, and clustering would provide a smoothed feature which will generate unnatural synthetic speech. In this paper, instead of complicate prosodic information we propose a simple three prosodic boundary types and decision tree questions that use rising tone, falling tone, and monotonic tone to improve naturalness. Experimental results show that our proposed method can improve naturalness of a HMM-based Korean TTS and get high MOS in the perception test.

  • In school mathematics, polygon and polyhedron are defined by vague terms such as "surrounded" or "formed" Moreover, the inclusion of boundary and interior in the definition of polygon and polyhedron is varied according to the context. Polygon and polyhedron are considered as "context-dependent concept" in school mathematics. Elementary school mathematics introduces a surface only in the context of solid, yet secondary school mathematics explains a surface as the trace of the line movement. From the perspective of fallabilism, it is possible and desirable to lead students to revise and improve their conceptions on polygon, polyhedron, and surface. It is more appropriate to name a face, an edge, and a vertex rather than to express a face of polyhedron, an edge of polyhedron, and a vertex of polyhedron in textbooks. The term "surface as a polygon" in secondary mathematics textbooks shows a conflict between intuitive approach in elementary school and logical approach in secondary school.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of English vocabulary learning strategies such as definition-oriented/contextoriented/situated context-oriented vocabulary learning strategy according to the cognitive styles of learners and interaction effect on the achievement test score between the learners' cognitive style and vocabulary learning strategies. The results show that there is no significant difference in the achievement test scores between field-dependent learner group and field-independent learner group. And there is significant difference in the English vocabulary achievement test scores among three experimental treatment groups, definition-oriented, context-oriented, situated context-oriented vocabulary learning strategy groups. Finally, there is an interaction effect on the achievement test score between the learners' cognitive style and vocabulary learning strategies.
