  • In order to selectively remove oil and organic compound from water, silica nanoparticles with hydrophobic coating was used. Since silica nanoparticles are generally hydrophilic, removal efficiency of oil and organic compound, such as toluene, in water can be decreased due to competitive adsorption with water. In order to increase the removal efficiency of oil and toluene, hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was coated on silica nanoparticles in the form of thin film. Hydrophobic property of the PDMS-coated silica nanoparticles and hydrophilic silica nanoparticles were easily confirmed by putting it in the water, hydrophilic particle sinks but hydrophobic particle floats. PDMS coated silica nanoparticles were dispersed on a slide glass with epoxy glue on and the water contact angle on the surface was determined to be over $150^{\circ}$, which is called superhydrophobic. FT-IR spectroscopy was used to check the functional group on silica nanoparticle surface before and after PDMS coating. Then, PDMS coated silica nanoparticles were used to selectively remove oil and toluene from water, respectively. It was demonstrated that PDMS coated nanoaprticles selectively aggregates with oil and toluene in the water and floats in the form of gel and this gel remained floating over 7 days. Furthermore, column filled with hydrophobic PDMS coated silica nanoparticles and hydrophilic porous silica was prepared and tested for simultaneous removal of water-soluble and organic pollutant from water. PDMS coated silica nanoparticles have strong resistibility for water and has affinity for oil and organic compound removal. Therefore PDMS-coated silica nanoparticles can be applied in separating oil or organic solvents from water.

  • Key part of main equipment in a gas turbine may be likely to be damaged due to operation under high temperature, high pressure, high-speed rotation, etc. Accordingly, the cost for maintenance increases and the damaged parts may cause generation to stop. The number of parts for maintenance also increases, but diagnostics technology fur the maintenance actually does not catch up with the demand. Blades are made of precipitation hardening Ni superalloy IN738 and the like for keeping hot strength. The surface of a blade is thermal-sprayed, using powder with main compositions such as Ni, Cr, Al, etc. in order to inhibit hot oxidation. Conventional regular maintenance of the coating layer of a blade is made by FPI (Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection) and MTP (Magnetic Particle Testing). Such methods, however, are complicated and take long time and also require much cost. In this study, defect diagnostics were tested for the coating layer of an industrial gas turbine blade, using an infraredthermography camera. Since the infrared thermography method can check a temperature distribution on a wide range of area by means of non-contact, it can advantageously save expenses and time as compared to conventional test methods. For the infrared thermography method, however, thermo-load must be applied onto a tested specimen and it is difficult to quantify the measured data. To solve the problems, this essay includes description about producing a specimen of a gas turbine blade (bucket), applying thermo-load onto the produced specimen, photographing thermography images by an infrared thermography camera, analyzing the thermography images, and pre-testing for analyzing defects on the coating layer of the gas turbine blade.

  • Recently, shipyards are making many efforts to reduce the number of the mounted blocks by increasing the block size. This is to improve productivity and reduce related costs by minimizing block movement and shortening the building period. However, as the blocks become larger, the weight increases considerably. If the target block has a damage due to an unexpected accident during block lifting, it may seriously cause a problem of the reusability of the block. In this study, a large-sized block of the offshore structure weighing 480 tons was lifting with a total of seven sling belts, and one sling belt was broken while it was moving, resulting in a situation in which a part of the edge of the block collided with the ground. The aim of this paper is to verify the structural integrity of the block that directly collides with the ground in the form of free fall due to the sling breakage. Considering that the hook loads acting on several sling belts holding the block are redistributed when a sling belt is broken, the hook loads were recalculated at the angle just before the sling breakage. These loads were used to check the safety of the sling belts. In addition, FE analysis was performed by calculating the amount of impact from the free fall condition, obtaining the impact area by using Hertz's contact theory, and then applying the impact load to the area.

  • In this paper, we propose a psychological state estimation process that computes children's attention and tension in response to training stimuli. Joint attention was adopted as the training stimulus required for behavioral intervention, and the Discrete trial training (DTT) technique was applied as the training protocol. Three types of training stimulation contents are composed to check the user's attention and tension level and provided mounted on a character-shaped tabletop robot. Then, the gaze response to the user's training stimulus is estimated with the vision-based head pose recognition and geometrical calculation model, and the nervous system response is analyzed using the PPG and GSR bio-signals using heart rate variability(HRV) and histogram techniques. Through experiments using robots, it was confirmed that the psychological response of users to training contents on joint attention could be quantified.

  • In May 2015, the first case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome occurred, leaving 186 patients, 38 deaths, and 16,693 quarantine patients. The government has carried out a monitoring of people in contact with the confirmed or suspected patients to prevent the spread of MERS infection. The management staff conducted monitoring of the quarantine subject twice a day during the 14-day period, to check compliance with isolation. However, as the number of people subject to isolation was increased explosively, such issues as the occurrence of residents occurred due to limitations of management personnel. Managers have also admitted that their home quarantine rules have become nominal when they checked the status of quarantine subject by using a call only two or three times a day, and that it is virtually impossible to control when the departees leave without permission. In this paper, home quarantine equipments and their means of authentication are proposed and verified. As a result of the verification, the proposed methods in this paper are expected to be used later as their own authentication method for home quarantine equipments.

  • In this study, a new recentering friction device (RFD) to retrofit steel moment frame structures is introduced. The device provides both self-centering and energy dissipation capabilities for the retrofitted structure. A hybrid performance-based seismic design procedure considering multiple limit states is proposed for designing the device and the retrofitted structure. The design of the RFD is achieved by modifying the conventional performance-based seismic design (PBSD) procedure using computational intelligence techniques, namely, genetic algorithm (GA) and artificial neural network (ANN). Numerous nonlinear time-history response analyses (NLTHAs) are conducted on multi-degree of freedom (MDOF) and single-degree of freedom (SDOF) systems to train and validate the ANN to achieve high prediction accuracy. The proposed procedure and the new RFD are assessed using 2D and 3D models globally and locally. Globally, the effectiveness of the proposed device is assessed by conducting NLTHAs to check the maximum inter-story drift ratio (MIDR). Seismic fragilities of the retrofitted models are investigated by constructing fragility curves of the models for different limit states. After that, seismic life cycle cost (LCC) is estimated for the models with and without the retrofit. Locally, the stress concentration at the contact point of the RFD and the existing steel frame is checked being within acceptable limits using finite element modeling (FEM). The RFD showed its effectiveness in minimizing MIDR and eliminating residual drift for low to mid-rise steel frames models tested. GA and ANN proved to be crucial integrated parts in the modified PBSD to achieve the required seismic performance at different limit states with reasonable computational cost. ANN showed a very high prediction accuracy for transformation between MDOF and SDOF systems. Also, the proposed retrofit showed its efficiency in enhancing the seismic fragility and reducing the LCC significantly compared to the un-retrofitted models.

  • Recently, the application of paint protection films (PPFs) for automobiles having a self-recovery coating layer has been grown up. In this study, we report the evaluation results on the basic physical properties of a poly(vinyl chloride)- based PPF containing poly(urea-urethane) hybrid self-recovery coating layer. Depending on the main chemical composition and the thickness of poly(urea-urethane)-based coating layer for PPF, the self-recovery performance by an optical microscope and the stain resistance through color difference value are measured. To improve the surface properties and show its easy-cleaning effect against the polluted things, silicone-modified polyacrylate is introduced to the self-recovery coating composition. The contact angle of water on the coated surface is confirmed to show its hydrophobic surface. Finally, accelerated weathering test of paint protection film with poly(urea-urethane) hybrid coating layer is performed to check the possibility of discoloration and deformation due to long-term exposure on harsh condition.

  • Recently, the number of confirmed cases has increased again with the new variant of COVID-19. Quarantine is recommended, especially to prevent the rapidly increasing spread, as environmental controls, such as minimizing contact with others, can increase safety. In addition, there are often cases in which the patient's condition cannot be confirmed from the standpoint of a guardian, such as visitation being prohibited under certain conditions. At this time, the sensor data values of oxygen, carbon dioxide concentrations, temperature and humidity, and alcohol, which are medical gases used in hospitals, are collected remotely using ZigBee wireless communication technology. Design a system that can be stored and monitored in a database. We propose an environmental monitoring system, which is a visualization system designed to allow hospitals to check and feedback data on the managed environment, and to give reliability to parents.

  • As the COVID-19 pandemic is prolonged, non-contact work has increased, as well as the demand for automation of simple and repetitive questions and tasks with success of using them. Therefore, companies are attempting to expand the area of automated business and apply various technologies such as AI to complex and various business processes of E2E to provide automation of all business. However, the extension to Intelligent Process Automation (IPA) is still in its beginning stage so that it is difficult to find practical use cases and related solutions. In this aspect, it is safe to say that there is insufficient evidence for companies which have various and complex enterprise processes to make a decision about the adoption. In this study, to solve this problem, a Hyper Automation Platform (HAP) that consists of RPA, Chatbot, and AI technology was proposed. Moreover, an implementation method that can bring intelligent process automation using HAP, and practical use-cases were provided so that it makes it possible to review the implementation of the HAP objectively and comprehensively. This study is meaningful and valuable to check the feasibility of the Hyper Automation concept and to actively utilize HAP.
