  • The dynamic performance design of catenary-pantograph system which collects current for the next generation Korean high speed train(KHST) was considered. Used was the same dynamic model of the catenary-pantograph system as that of TGV-K which will be introduced for Kyung-bu corridor. Using the model , sensitivity analysis fer design variables were made to improve dynamic performance of KHST system. The results of sensitivity analysis and performance improvement are as follows: (1) It was found that aerodynamic force, tension of contact wire, mass of contact strip, mass of supporting contact strip, mass of clamp, mass of steady arm, and stiffness of plunger were the design variables most influencing the dynamic performance of the system. (2) Pantograph with reductions of 20% aerodynamic force, 34% weight of supporting contact strip, 20% spring constant of plunger, and 34% equivalent mass of steady arm was very possible system for the KHST which will be running at maximum operating speed 350 km/h.

  • A novel scanning probe measurement system was developed to enable precise profile measurements of microaspheric surfaces. An air-bearing stylus with a microprobe was used to perform the surface profile scanning. The new system worked in a contact mode and had the capability of measuring micro-aspheric surfaces with large tilt angles and complex profiles. Due to limitations resulting from the contact mode, such as possible damage caused by the contact force and lateral resolution restrictions from the curvature of the probe tip, several system improvements were implemented. An air bearing was used to suspend the shaft of the probe to reduce the contact force, enabling fine adjustments of the contact force by changing the air pressure. The movement of the shaft was measured by a linear encoder with a scale attached to the actual shaft to avoid Abbe errors. A $50-{\mu}m-diameter$ glass sphere was bonded to the tip of the probe to improve the lateral resolution of the system. The maximum contact force of the probe was 10 mN. The shaft was capable of holding the probe continuously if the contact force was less than 40 mN, and the resolution of the probe could be as high as 10 nm, The performance of the new scanning probe measurement system was verified by experimental data.

  • With the recent evolutionary progress in network and terminal technologies, current videoconference systems are in the level of practical use. The existing systems, however, would not be fully useful for decision making process since eyes of users can not always be in contact that makes it difficult to read the expression of participants. In this paper, we discuss the principle and the impact of“MONJUnoCHIE System”a videoconference system with eye contact using a special display device called“Glass Vision”.

  • Corrugation of railway track can be caused by the various dynamic behavior of travelling wheels and track. In this paper, the coupled vibrations of travelling wheel and railway track are analyzed as the cause of corrugations. To analyze the coupled vibrations, the track supported by the sleepers and the traveling wheel are identified to the elastically supported infinite beam and the spring-mass system which runs at constant speed. The Hertzian contact spring is considered betwen the infinite beam and spring-mass system. The dynamic responses of elastically supported infinite beam and spring-mass system are calculated. The cause and development of rail corrugation are discussed in the view point of contact force fluctuation affected by the elastic supports and the corrugated surface profile of the track. By the obtained results, the possibilities of resonance are checked between the excitation by the corrugated surface profile and the natural frequency of contact spring-moving mass system. It may be thought to a development of railway corrugation.

  • In the cold and temperate regions of Korea the icing and ice coats on 25 kV overhead contact wire during winter is a very serious problem. This generates shocks at the mechanical interface of the collecting strips of the pantograph and the contact wire and extra electrical resistance, which may affect quality of current collection at the contact wire / collecting strips of pantograph interface. De-icing operations should be performed just before train operation to avoid the formation of another ice layer. This paper presents temperature analysis of the de-icing system which could be applied to the overhead contact wire of railways.

  • The decisive criteria to determine collection performance is the contact force between pantograph and catenary. The contact force consists of a static force and dynamic force related to vibration characteristics, train speed and etc. The low contact force leads to the loss of contact, and most countries regulate it below 1% at operation speed. This study presents a technical overview of criteria for collection performance of catenary system.

  • This paper presents a method of controlling contact force for deburring tasks. The cope with the nonlinearities and time-varying properties of the robot and the environment, a neural network control theory is applied to design the contact force control system. We show that the contact force between the hand and the contacting surface can be controlled by adjusting the command velocity of a robot hand, which is accomplished by the modeling of a robot and the environment as Mass-Spring-Damper system. Simulation results are shown.

  • The contact characteristics of the current collection system are investigated by analyzing data collected during a test run of the Korean high speed rail vehicle. For the analysis, the signals from accelerometers and load cells attached to the various parts of the pantograph are analyzed in both the time and frequency domains. In the frequency domain, the pantograph response consists of low frequency components related to the rigid-body motion of the panhead assembly and high frequency components due to the structural vibration modes of the pantograph. The analysis shows that the inclusion of the high frequency structural vibration modes of the pantograph in the contact force calculation has a negligible effect on the predicted mean value of the contact force but significantly affects the magnitude of its fluctuations. This finding implies that numerical simulations using lumped element models of the pantograph may accurately predict the mean contact force but is limited in its capacity for predicting the fluctuation about the mean. Since the ratio of the fluctuation to the mean in the contact force increases with increased train speed, the limitation of the predictions based on numerical simulation results becomes more pronounced at higher train speed.

  • In this work, an optimum shape synthesis for rolling contact components was done to minimize contact forces considering dynamic characteristics of the system. Even this method was applied to an OHC type cam follower system, it can be expanded to general rolling contact shape design problems which are strictly forced to follow predetermined motion. First, the follower optimum angular motion was derived to minimize the valve peak acceleration while satisfying all the constraints of valve motion. Then the cam and follower contact shape were synthesized to give the proposed follower motion. Theoretically, two components shape to generate a predetermined motion can not be uniquely determined. So the cam shape was syntehsized with parametric synthesis method to minimize the peak contact force between cam and follower when the follower shape is assumed as a circle or an ellipse.
