  • Research on construction waste unit was in progress in the 1995 when 'Proper Disposal and Recycling Measures for Construction Waste' was made by the Seoul Development Institute. Such an effort has been made in order to cope with the lack of natural resources in Korea and to utilize the reusable resources. Furthermore, these efforts have also increased due to the improved standing of Korea in the international community. A large number of residential buildings were built in the response to the government's policy by increasing the supply of houses between the 1970's and 1980's. In 2000, more reconstruction and redevelopment was done because of the aged buildings and change of use for those buildings. And the project has been actively promoted until now, which caused a sharp increase in the generation volume of construction waste. In Korea, 8 kinds of construction waste unit, including the standard construction manpower and materials estimation, are introduced. Currently, they provide standards to different building categories and waste properties while for construction sites different standards are applied. This study aims to measure the actual amount of construction waste after sample buildings are dismantled and analyzes the estimation of the waste quantity by using various standard units. Through comparison, this study will figure out the differences among the standard units in order to find out how to apply the standard units properly. Moreover, this research will provide practical measures to apply such units to construction sites.

  • In a banking process for construction of a complex, non-compaction construction has been applied in most sites, which is a method that soils are compacted by the equipment load without being compacted separately. However, there are no specific descriptions in the construction manual or specifications, so it is unclear to evaluate the excavation volume. Hence, this study is a basic study to compare the soil conversion factor at a design stage and the actual soil conversion factor of a banking ground under a non-compaction condition in order to examine the feasibility in constructing the ground for construction of the complex and to examine appropriateness of the earth work in the site by conducting an indoor, field, and load-settlement test and proposing a reasonable soil conversion factor. Under the non-compaction condition, the soil conversion factor C is set to be 1.0 at the design stage, but the result of the field test was 0.86 which is smaller than the value at the design stage. It was expected that this result would increase the banking volume, and the construction result actually showed a difference in the banking volume. Therefore, for the baking ground under the non-compaction condition, it is necessary to apply the value C suitable for the site condition after performing test by considering the site's condition and the banking height.

  • When concrete was hardened, it should had considered a crack to make internal stress by hydration heat. For control of crack, admixture was use to change cement because hydration heat was effect to cement. High strength mass concrete had much hydration heat with high volume of cement. It was necessary to reduce hydration heat in construction method. In this study, it evaluates hydration heat, compressive strength of transfer concrete girder regard to field construction type such as separation, whole etc. Also, we test compressive strength of concrete with core and mold specimen.

  • This paper describes the methods to propose the optimal material properties and construction steps that prevent cracks due to the thermal stresses induced by the hydration heat under the construction of the concrete underpass structures. To achieve the goal of this study, the heat transfer theories were employed and the three-dimensional finite element model of the underpass structure was developed and used for the structural analyses. If the volume of the concrete member that is placed at one time is significantly large, the member is assumed to be the mass concrete and is easy to induce cracks. In order to minimize the cracks during the construction, two different methods can be utilized: one is to arrange the construction steps optimally and the other is to change the materials to reduce the probability of the crack occurrence. In this study, the analyses were performed by considering the changes in material properties with time, the characteristics of the hydration heat generation for cements and admixtures, the volume of the concrete placement at one time, and the environmental conditions.

  • Over about 30% of problems in construction is related to water-leaking, and the loss from this problem can incur as much as three times the cost of initial construction. Thus, water vapor pressure is known to be the primary cause of defective waterproofing. Accordingly, the theories on the relationship between water pressure and temperature as well as damp-proofing volume of concrete and the change in vapor pressure volume were reviewed and analyzed in this study by making test samples after spraying a dampness remover and applying waterproofing materials to the prepared test specimens. The result of measuring water vapor pressure with the surface temperature of the waterproofing (fluid-applied membrane) layer at the experimental temperature setting of about $10^{\circ}C$, which is the annual average temperature of Seoul, indicated that (1) the temperature of the fluid-applied membrane elevated to about $40^{\circ}C$, and the water vapor pressure generated from the fluid-applied membrane was about 0.03 N/mm 2 when the surface temperature of the waterproofing layer was raised to about $80^{\circ}C$. (2) when the temperature of the fluid-applied membrane of the waterproofing layer was raised from $30^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$, water vapor pressure of about 0.01 N/mm 2 was generated, and (3) when a thermal source was applied to the fluid-applied membrane (waterproofing) layer, the temperature increased from $35^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$, and approximately $0.005\;N/mm^2$ of water vapor pressure was generated.

  • Korea has a high volume of exhaust in environmental pollutants compared to her economic size, which results from the increase of the ratio in high energy consuming industries. There arises an issue that efficient energy saving is not achieved in the related projects of the construction, which is one of the high energy consuming industries. In addition, such projects of dismantling old and decrepit buildings are frequent in recent years. Given the situation, to obtain much better effects of energy saving, it is necessary to build basic databases and develop utilization plans on energy consumption volume, exhaust volume of pollutants, and environmental expenses that come from the dismantlement stages out of the life cycle of construction projects. Therefore, this study calculates the exhaust volume of environmental pollutants, converts it into environmental expenses by pollutants, and evaluates the environmental economics on the projects of dismantling buildings, utilizing LCI DB that is suggested by Ministry of Knowledge Economy and Ministry of Environment. For this purpose, related data research, the existing literature study, and on-the-spot field investigation were conducted. Based on the results of analysis on the collected data, the environmental economics of the target building was evaluated.

  • To develop high-strength high-volume ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) concrete, this study investigated the characteristics of strength development and durability of concrete with the water-to-binder ratio of 23% and the GGBFS replacement ratio of up to 65%. The results show that the compressive strength of GGBFS blended concrete is lower than that of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) concrete up to 3-day age, but the becomes higher after 7-day age. Together with strength increase, the pore structure becomes tighter, and thus the resistance to chloride ion penetration increases. Therefore, the GGBFS blended concrete has high resistance to freezing and thawing without additional air-entraining, and high resistance to carbonation despite low amount of calcium hydroxide ($Ca(OH)_2$). On the other hand, if silica fume (SF) is blended with GGBFS, the strength becomes lower than that of the concrete blended with GGBFS only, and the resistance to chloride ion penetration deceases. Therefore, it needs further studies on the reaction of SF in high-strength high-volume GGBFS concrete.

  • self-loading, various problems related to construction can be solved as well as the save of construction cost. Thus, this study has an aim of applying foam concrete to structural purpose by adding bottom ash as a reinforcing material like fine aggregate, in contrast to conventional non-structural usage such as soundproofing or insulating materials. In addition, it was evaluated in terms of unit volume weight, flow value, air void, water absorption and dosage of foam agent wether replacement of cement by granulated blast furnace slag or fly-ash has an effect on the material characteristics of foam concrete. As results of experiments, it can be found that the increase of fine aggregate ratio, that is to say, the increase of bottom ash results in the increase of unit volume weight, while decreasing air void and flow value. But, appropriate addition of bottom ash to foam concrete makes it easy to control a homogeneous and uniform quality in foam concrete due to less sensitive to bubbles. As the replacement ratio of mineral admixtures such as granulated blast furnace slag and fly-ash increases, as unit volume weight tends to decrease. In the meanwhile, serious effects were shown on fluidity of foam concrete when more than limit of replacement ratio was applied.
