  • In this study, the characteristics of the Mock-up test were reviewed to analyze the applicability of the coal gasification slag (CGS) from the integrated gasification combination Cycle (IGCC) to the concrete fine aggregate. The analysis shows that CGS and crushed sand mix is the best combination of CGS combined with about 50 % of CGS based on the effects of promoting liquidity and strength. This is expected to be a positive factor in securing the strength and flexibility of concrete given the optimal mix of CGS, and may also contribute to the improvement of quality.

  • This paper presents the applicability of NATM Composite Lining method in domestic tunnel construction sites. Firstly, in order to produce high quality PC Panel, optimal steam curing condition is reviewed. And in preparation for fire inside the tunnel, the fire-resistance test of PC Panel is carried out. The constructability of NATM Composite Lining method and the drainage ability of light-weight foamed mortar is also evaluated through field construction test. And PC Panel combination program is developed to calculate the quantity of PC Panel efficiently. Besides, economic evaluation for NATM Composite Lining method is conducted. From this research, it is clearly found that NATM Composite Lining method is applicable to domestic tunnel construction site.

  • Today's dynamic nature of the construction environment requires management systems to be active enough to take real-time decisions. For real-time decision making, effective 3D spatial information acquisition is imperative. Various 3D data acquisition technologies are being developed and tested for 3D spatial information acquisition and its use for wide range of areas in the construction industry, however, there are shortcomings in these technologies. The major problems are long processing time and high cost which make current technologies impossible to be used for real-time applications. Laser-based Flash LADAR that illuminates the entire scene with diffuse laser light is comparatively fast and cost effective, therefore it is well suited for 3D spatial modeling of dynamic environment on a construction site. This paper presents experimental results to evaluate the performance of flash LADAR and discuss issues of applicability of Flash LADAR to 3D spatial modeling on a construction site.

  • Preeminent performance of construction industry are unattainable with poor productivity resulting in time and cost over runs. Enhancement in productivity cannot be achieved without identifying and analyzing factors that adversely affect productivity. The objective therefore is to propose a productivity analysis model to quantify the probability of effect of factors influencing productivity by using fuzzy logic incorporated with relative importance index method, for various types of construction projects. To achieve this objective, a questionnaire survey was carried out targeting respondents of Indian construction industry, from four distinct projects, namely, residential, commercial, infrastructure and industrial projects. Based on questionnaire administered, the relative importance and ranks of factors demonstrated using relative importance index method. Probability assessment model to analyze productivity was then developed by using Fuzzy Logic Toolbox of MATLAB. The applicability of the proposed model was tested in seven construction projects and the probability of impact of factors on productivity evaluated. The results of application of model in the construction firms infers that the most contributing factor groups for most of the projects were discerned to be manpower, motivation and time group.

  • In a tall building construction with reinforced concrete structures, the selection of an appropriate formwork system is a crucial factor for the success of the project. Thus, selecting an appropriate formwork system affects the entire construction duration and cost, as well as subsequent construction activities. However, in practice, the selection of an appropriate formwork system has depended mainly on the intuitive and subjective opinion of working level employees with restricted experience. Therefore, in this study, a formwork system selection model using the Adaboost algorithm is proposed to support the selection of a formwork system that is suitable for the construction site conditions. To validate the applicability of the proposed model, the selection models Adaboost and ANN were both applied to actual case data of tall building construction in Korea. The Adaboost model showed slightly better accuracy than that of the ANN model. The Adaboost model can assist engineers to determine the appropriate formwork system at the inception of future projects.

  • Blockchain is a secure technology that enables transactions between parties without risking data corruption. Besides cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology is being widely adopted in various forms by diverse industries. One promising application is construction contracts. Given that construction projects are executed under strict contractual requirements, blockchain technology-based contracts can ensure that contractual requirements are executed among parties to the contract. The objective of this study is to apply blockchain technology to smart construction contracts and determine their potential feasibility in construction management. In this study, a prototype smart construction contract is presented and its applicability is explored. We conclude that smart construction contracts can be effective as a contractual tool to enhance payment flows in the construction process.

  • The effectiveness of Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools and processes has been recognized by the industry and owners are beginning to adopt Triple Bottom Line accounting practices, to enhance economic performance and environmental and social performance. However, the widespread and practical application of Green BIM remains largely unrealized. The authors identify that lack of understanding of the applicability of sustainability metrics to BIM design process is a significant barrier to this adoption. Through literature review this paper outlines the various sustainability metrics available to construction and elaborates on the potential of BIM for sustainable design. The paper maps and correlates applicable concepts of sustainability evaluation systems to BIM and describes the constraints in current BIM tools.

  • The sudden changes in the construction market and the progressively intensifying price wars have amplified the importance of the construction cost estimation in the initial and planning phases of construction projects. However the methodologies and process of estimating construction cost in the planning and design phase are not standardized in the domestic market, in contrast to the markets of more developed countries. Therefore this paper proposes a new approximate estimation model to be used from the initial stages of construction projects. This methodology that extracts, modifies and synthesizes comparable elements of previous cases. This will introduce the foundation for the implementation of systems with improved usability and applicability.
