  • In this paper, the experimental study on the identification of noise sources and noise transmission paths was carried out for the cabin noise control of construction equipment. In order to investigate noise and vibration characteristics of cabin structure, sound absorption, transmission, and radiation tests were performed using cabin assembly models. The noise/vibration source levels were obtained from the real cabins of wheel loader and excavator. Using transfer functions of cabins and real cabins' source data, cabin noise was decomposed into airborne and structureborne noise transmissions. Finally noise sources and major transmission paths were successfully identified for wheel loader and excavator's cabins.

  • Noise and vibration triggered by pile driving in a construction site not only give hard time to the surrounding areas but could also cause residents nearby to file civil complaints to the extent of bringing construction to a halt. To deal with this issue, construction engineers have worked strenuously to develop low noise & low vibration pile methods. A noise & vibration-free screw concrete pile method proposed in this study is one of the successful outputs. It penetrates pile underground by rotating and pressing in body of the pile to avert noise and vibration while maximizing bearing capacity. A prototype of noise and vibration-free precast screw pile method was manufactured, which is not seen anywhere in Korea and elsewhere, and have undergone pilot tests twice to determine construction method.

  • In environmental impact assessment, noise impact assessment usually consists of three stages surveying the existing noise levels by measurements, predicting noise levels induced by construction works and predicting noise levels after the completion of project. When predicting noise level in urban area, this method does not consider acoustic phenomena like multi reflection, diffraction and absorption due to complex topographic configuration of building and terrains. For the purpose, a noise mapping tool is utilized to produce a series of noise maps, which are those for the present, for the works of construction and for the future. For accurate noise mapping, acoustical and topographic information is essential. Standard sound power levels and directivities of various construction equipments are required and scheduling of construction processes and locations of the equipments should be provided. In the case of exceeding legal limit, mitigation measures are applied to satisfy the legal limits and subsequent noise map is obtained and checked.

  • In environmental Impact assessment, noise impact assessment usually consists of three stages-surveying the existing noise levels by measurements, predicting noise levels induced by construction works and predicting noise levels after the completion of a project. The distance-attenuation relation of a point source, which has been used to predict the noise level due to its simplicity does not consider complex acoustic phenomena like multi-reflection, -diffraction and -absorption due to complex topographic configuration of buildings and terrains. For the consideration of such physical complexities. a noise mapping tool is adopted to produce a series of noise maps, which are those for the present, tot the works of construction and for the future. • 3-D noise map of Mugue Dong of the Ulsan City has been constructed. Comparing with the measured noise level, the predicted noise level has been confirmed for its accuracy. Correction factors for better prediction result using the constructed noise map have been investigated proving that its method is useful. The procedure of noise map construction method has also been introduced using RLS-90, Cadna A.

  • Recently, with the increase of income level, many people desire to have agreeable and quiet surrounding. However, construction noise has caused much annoyance for a number of dwellers and workers in nearby construction field. It has become a very serious issue in our living environment. For the accurate evaluation of construction noise with various frequency spectrums and fluctuation characteristics, the evaluation system should reflect not only physical quantities but also the psychological respects of individual persons. With preceding study of psycho-acoustical experiments, this study attempts to survey the classification of adjectives and sound using the method of selected description and intends to get the basic data for establishment of a standard about construction noise.

  • According to the expanding of construction machinery works, the number of civil complaints demanding compensations are increasing continuously from surrounding residents due to the noise from construction fields. However, the noise is usually managed restrictedly during the construction phase rather than prevented in advance. So, the efforts to solve the noise problem are occurring only after complaints have been made. Also, excessive cost and time consuming in order to solve the complaints negatively affects to construction companies. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop an optimized scheduling process model for controlling the noise in construction field by considering the planned time, cost, and the number of equipment before construction. In addition, this process model is expected to provide a useful information about the cost comparison between the original planned cost plus compensation and the optimized cost considering noise limitation so that the site managers can manage their projects effectively.

  • The interior noise reduction of construction equipment is concerned for improving the driver comfort in this study. From the baseline test, the exhaust noise gives a big contribution to the interior noise of construction equipment. And the detail noise contribution analysis of the exhaust system, the tail pipe, which is for ventilation an engine room hot air to outside, amplify the exhaust noise around operating engine RPM associated with tail pipe structural and cavity resonances. To remove the noise amplifying effects, the tail pipe has to be shorted its length. Even the noise can be attenuated the ventilation flux when using the redesigned tail pipe is reduced than the original one. Thus, a shape change of the tail pipe is additionally needed for increasing the ventilation flux and attenuating the exhaust noise using CFD technique. The CFD results of the tail pipe give a meaning full information what obstructs the ventilation flex in the current design and how changes the tail pipe.
