  • It has been well known that the ductile cracking of steel would be accelerated by triaxial stress state. Recently, the characteristics of critical crack initiation of steels are quantitatively estimated using the two-parameters, that is, equivalent plastic strain and stress triaxiality, criterion. This study is paid to the fundamental clarification of the effect of geometrical heterogeneity and strength mismatching, which can elevate plastic constraint due to heterogeneous plastic straining, and loading rate on ductile crack initiation behavior. Also, the ductile crack initiation testing were conducted under static and dynamic loading using round bar specimens with circumferential notch and strength mis-matching. The result showed that the nominal strain at ductile crack initiation of circumferential notch specimens small then the round bar specimens for effect of geometrical discontinuity. Also, the nominal strain at ductile crack initiation was decreased with decrease of notch root radius of curvature.

  • An under-tension system is frequently employed for large-span structures to reduce the deflection and member size. In this study, a microgenetic algorithm was used to find the optimum cross-section of truss structures with an undertension cable under transverse loading. Maximum deflection, allowable stress, and buckling were considered constraints. The proposed approach was verified using a 10-bar truss sample that shows good agreement with the previous results. In the numerical results, minimum-weight design of the under-tension structure was performed for various magnitudes of pretension.

  • It is important to evaluate the fracture initiation behaviors of steel structure. It has been well known that the ductile cracking of steel would be accelerated by triaxial stress state. Recently, the characteristics of critical crack initiation of steels are quantitatively estimated using the two-parameters, that is, equivalent plastic strain and stress triaxiality, criterion. This study is paid to the fundamental clarification of the effect of notch radius, which can elevate plastic constraint due to heterogeneous plastic straining on critical condition to initiate ductile crack using two-parameters. Hense, the crack initiation testing were conducted under static loading using round bar specimens with circumferential notch. To evaluate the stress/strain state in the specimens was used thermal elastic-plastic FE-analysis. The result showed that equivalent plastic strain to initiate ductile crack expressed as a function of stress triaxiality obtained from the homogeneous specimens with circumferential notched under static loading. And it was evaluated that by using this two-parameters criterion, the critical crack initiation of homogeneous specimens under static loading.

  • An assessment of a mathematical method of synthesing tire tread pitch noise spectra is studied. The method is based on the summation of phasors and the calculated spectra are conveniently generated as computer printout in the form of bar graph. The technique, its usefulness, its limitations and the implications of using such a model are discussed. This paper presents a basic study on optimum pitch arrangement for prediction and control of tire tread pitch noise in constraint condition relatied with tire properties, thus enabling optimum tread pitch arrangements to be determined at the design stage, by application of old tire tread pitch simulation.

  • The vibration of a flexible cantilever tube with nonlinear constraints when it is subjected to flow internally with fluids is examined by experimental and theoretical analysis. These kinds of studies have been performed to find the existence of chaotic motion. In this paper, the important parameters of the system leading to such a chaotic motion such as Young's modulus and the coefficient of viscoelastic damping are discussed. The parameters are investigated by means of system identification so that comparisons are made between numerical analysis using the design parameters and the experimental results. The chaotic region led by several period-doubling bifurcations beyond the Hopf bifurcation is also re-established with phase portraits, bifurcation diagram and Lyapunov exponent so that one can define optimal parameters for system design.

  • We develop a new method of simultaneous optimization of trajectory and shape of redundant flexible manipulators for collision-free utilizing the B-spline function and a mathematical programming method We adopt an approximate flexible manipulator model which consists of rigid bar elements and spring elements. We use B-spline function for determining the approximate trajectory and the expressions of the outline of obstacles. The used total performance index consists of 2 performance indices. The first is the driving energy, and the second is the trajectory deviation which is caused by the approximate modeling for the flexible manipulator. We design optimal collision-free trajectory of flexible manipulators by searching optimum positions of the control points for B-spline approximation which minimize the performance index subject to constraint condition for collision-free. Some examinations through numerical examples show the effectiveness of the method

  • This study was carried out the model experiment in laboratory to evaluate the bearing capacity improvement of soft ground as altered constraint condition of reinforcements according to geotextile, georid, steel bar. As a results, the value of BCR was increased linearly as improvement of the stiffness of reinforcements, and the factor governed the increasement of BCR was the increasement of frictions between reinforcement and clay as far as the constrain conditions increased until T=85.6kg. Moreover, An angle of inclination, ${\theta}$, between reinforcement and horizontal surface was distributed from $38^{\circ}$ to $50^{\circ}$ for Geotextile, from $45^{\circ}$ to $50^{\circ}$ for Geogrid and from $14^{\circ}$ to $16^{\circ}$ for steel bar. A radius of heaving, r, of clay ground by vertical weight at side was distributed from 0.6m to 0.7m for Geotextile, from 0.5m to 0.8m for Geogrid, and from 2.4m to 3.0m for steel bar. In case of steel bar, r was 4 times that of Geotextile.

  • This study, as basic research which was intended to develope the surface reinforcement method using reinforcement material which is applicable to very soft ground in Korea, was aimed at proposing the design parameter for the surface ground improvement method. To that end, a wide width tensile test using geotextile, geogrid and steel bar (substitute for bamboo) and 25 kinds of the laboratory model tests with the end restraint conditions of the reinforcement that comprises the constrained and partially constrained (3 types) conditions were conducted. And the result indicated that the modulus of subgrade reaction or $N_c$ value (5.3) apparently overestimated the bearing capacity of very soft ground such as dredged ground. Moreover, as a result of model test by partially constraining the preload of 23.0kgf using geotextile, the effect of bearing capacity($q_1$) appeared to be the largest till the loading stress was $0.4tf/m^2$ due to cohesion, while it reached 75% of the maximum bearing force after $0.4tf/m^2$ due to increase in the effect of bearing capacity($q_2$) caused by the tensile force of the reinforcement. Such results tended to have appeared constantly or very similarly with each other, irrespective of the type of reinforcement (geogrid, steel bar) and constraint conditions.

  • It has been well known that ductile fracture of steels is accelerated by triaxial stresses. The characteristics of ductile crack initiation in steels are evaluated quantitatively using two-parameters criterion based on equivalent plastic strain and stress triaxiality. It has been demonstrated by authors using round-bar specimens with circumferential notch in single tension that the critical strain to initiate ductile crack from specimen center depends considerably on stress triaxiality, but surface cracking of notch root is in accordance with constant strain condition. In order to evaluate the stress/strain state in the specimens, especially under dynamic loading, a thermal, elastic-plastic, dynamic finite element (FE) analysis considering the temperature rise due to plastic deformation has been carried out. This study provides the fundamental clarification of the effect of strength mismatching, which can elevate plastic constraint due to heterogeneous plastic straining, loading mode and loading rate on critical condition to initiate ductile crack from notch root using equivalent plastic strain and stress triaxiality based on the two-parameter criterion obtained on homogeneous specimens under static tension. The critical condition to initiate ductile crack from notch root for strength mismatched bend specimens under both static and dynamic loading would be almost the same as that for homogeneous tensile specimens with circumferential sharp notch under static loading.
