The Grave encapsulated by lime soil mixture were excavated with clothing and hemp shoes from the Choseon Dynasty in Gooam, Sacheon. Hemp shoes have wood in the center and their surroundings were made of complex materials including herbaceous ones but the front part was lost or became very fragile. We analyzed the hemp shoes and pre-test of consolidant for conservation treatment of hemp shoes. As a result of analyzing, three kinds of plants were identified. For hemp shoes, Oryza spp, hemp, and one kind of dicotyledones were used and it was analyzed that fabrics attached to the back of Dogaengi was cotton. Conservation methods for pre-test of consolidant, Polyethylene Glycol, Paraloid-B72, Dammar gum, Methyl Cellulose and Silicone resin was selected. The solution was sprayed twice in a 24-hour duration. Properties of consolidant was measured; color difference, glossiness difference, folding streangth and tensile streangth. By comparing the results, PEG was confirmed to the most suitable as consolidant. For the conservation treatment, cleaning and strengthening was conducted. For strengthening treatment, PEG 4000 was selected given that the shoes were made of complex materials. The PEG impregnation method was applied with the PEG 4000 concentration gradually changing from 5% to 80% for reinforcement. Then humidity- controlled drying in order to avoid any rapid environment change.

Borimsa was first built by Wonpyo, the great Buddhist priest of Whaum branch, in the year of 759 A.D. And Later the priest Chejing converted to Zen Buddhism in the year of 858 A.D., Borimsa got the central status of the Zen Buddhism, and was so prospered during the Chosun period. This research is the conservation treatment of the Buddhist literatures and the "Wolinsukbo" Vol.25, discovered in 1995 from the Four Devas of Borimsa, Buddhist Temple at Jangheung County, in the viewpoint of the bibliography. "Wolinsukbo" Vol.25 is consist of 142 pages and the size is of 22cm width, 32.3cm of length, and 2.8cm of depth. And also have the five-pinned eye revisor. The pre-conservation condition of this book was partly spotted by the permeated rain, and the cover pages being deeply spoiled. The conservation treatment was done in the sequences of 1) 1st linsing, 2) repairing and correcting, 3) 2nd linsing and conservation, 4) cutting and binding. The post-conservation condition of "Wolinsukbo" Vol.25 is of, 9 pages including covers are added, total 151 pages, and the size being 22.5 cm width, 32.7cm of length, and 3.2cm of depth.
A C-46 transport aircraft, which can be thought of as a large cultural heritage item from the modern period, was subjected to paint analysis and conservation treatment in preparation for its exhibition. The C-46 is the first aircraft ever dispatched to overseas combat zones by the Korean Air Force and carried out missions during the Vietnam War. The aircraft is mainly made of aluminum and shows signs of corrosion on its surface, including pitting and etching, as well as gray and white powdery attachments. In the analysis of the paint, diatomite(SiO2·nH2O) was confirmed in the red paint, titanium dioxide(TiO2) was identified in the white paint, black iron oxide(Fe3O4) was detected in the black paint, and colcothar(Fe3O4) mixed with putty was confirmed in the blue paint. Infrared spectroscopy revealed the use of alkyd resin in the paint on the main body and nitrocellulose in the Taegeuk pattern. During the conservation treatment, mechanical cleaning, such as sanding, was conducted to remove paint and varnish from the surface. Corrosion was removed by sanding and cleaning with chemical solvents, and new paints and varnishes were applied. Through the paint analysis and conservation treatment, the aircraft was made available for exhibition in a stable condition.
It is not easy to define the priority criteria of the need of conservation treatment for stone cultural heritage, although many of them have been treated and restored over the past decade. This study approached the correlation between damage grade and the need of conservation treatment based on damage diagnosis of stone cultural heritage carried out from 2001 to 2005. The number of Third-graded (from First to Fifth-grade) stone heritage in deterioration was the highest among state-designated stone cultural heritage. The Fourth-graded stone cultural heritage (143 in total) was mostly influenced by high physiochemical deterioration, whereas the Fifth-graded ones (61 in total) was dominantly affected by biological colonization. It was estimated that total 211 stone cultural heritage were treated for conservation and restoration from 2002 to 2011. They were usually cleaned (total 134, 26.1%), joined and consolidated, and maintenance works as shelter construction, drainage installation and surrounding cleaning were carried out for some of them. The number of conservation intervention increased with the high deterioration grade, and the case number of metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. By age, the stone cultural heritage in Three-kingdom Period were treated the most, and other heritage in Unified Shilla, Goryeo and Joseon showed an approximate ratio. The stone cultural heritage fallen in the fifth-grade in deterioration demonstrated the highest ratio, approximately 80% of conservation intervention. These results can be used as preliminary data to define the emergency criteria for conservation intervention policy.
The conservation methods for the charred-woods excavated under the Daewoongjeon Hall of Youngguksa Temple, Youngdong, Chungbuk, Korea were investigated. The tests revealed that PEG#400 10% for four days followed by gradual application of PEG#4000 10% to 40% showed the most stable and robust results, showing no cracks in macroscopic examination. This treatment method was applied to the two charred elements, which appeared to be the capitals at the excavated site. After the treatment, the consolidated capitals were transported to the laboratory, where they were retreated with PEG#4000 80% at $85^{\circ}$.... Charred capitals showed also an excellent level of stability.
The gilt-bronze standing Buddha and bronze standing Buddha statues excavated from Yeongguksa Temple in Yeongdong, currently held in the collection of the Cheongju National Museum, underwent conservation treatment after scientific study. Materials analysis showed that the gilt-bronze statue was made with a ternary alloy of copper, tin, and lead, while the bronze statue is of a binary alloy of copper and tin. The analysis also revealed that the bronze statue contains gold, and it is therefore recommended to change its description to gilt-bronze standing Buddha. The gilt-bronze statue appears to have been made with lead produced in Korea. The material observed on the surface that is presumed to have been used as an adhesive for the gold coloring is thought to be lacquer. For conservation treatment, the statues were minimally cleaned using physical and chemical methods and were treated through consolidation and protective coating.
This study is to examine the PEG concentration, and drying humidity and drying periods of humidity-controlled drying(HCD) for conservation of waterlogged woods(Pinus densiflora S. et Z.), and dimension stability of HCD were compared with those of air-drying and vacuum freeze-drying(VFD). Dimension stability of vacuum freeze-drying was the most excellent, i.e., PEG crystal was uniformly distributed in woods. Increasing concentrations of PEG, dimension stability of HCD was increased and drying periods decreased. Dimension stability of HCD after the treatment with the high concentration(70%) of PEG soaking was similar to those of VFD after the treatment with the low concentration(40%) of PEG soaking. In conclusion, high concentration(about 70% in water) PEG solution was the most suitable as a pre-treatment for HCD of waterlogged woods. However, drying should be maintained with enough high humidity and longer period.
A part of the bronze bell from Goryeo (918-1392) in the collection of Buyeo National Museum was missing, and it was noted to retain corrosion products and burial accretions. Chemical analysis showed that the chemical composition of the bronze bell is Cu (74.18%), Sn (9.58%), Pb (15.77%), and very small amounts of As, Fe, Sb, Bi, and Ag. It was noted that the microstructure of the bronze bell was mainly made up of α phase and α+δ eutectoid phase, and gray (S) and black (Pb segregation) prevailed. Conservation treatment has been done for the preservation of this bronze bell.
There is a Seated Stone Bhaishajyaguru-Vaidurya Buddha (Medicine Buddha) which was moved from Yongjang-gye in the garden of Gyeongju National Museum. The head was cemented on the body of the statue in 1974 before its display. Recently, we have done another conservation work on the statue because microbes and the other contaminants have built up on the surface and the restored part of the statue has loosened again. By taking r-ray pictures, we have checked the structure of the statue, especially the connected part and removed old materials used for the previous restoration. We reinforced the cracked parts, cleaned the surface, and then restored the statue. We finished the conservation process by adjusting the color.
This study was conducted to analysis and conserve a lacquered sheath excavated from Soochon-ri, Gongju, Korea. The lacquered sheath was collected together with iron relics. The lacquered sheath was damaged and lost the parts by the external pressure. Many parts were adhered with the rust. Firstly, the object was understanded to have the relation with the iron materials excavated together through the X-ray photographs. As the analysis of the lacquer layers, the report conducted to a study the method of production. After the analysis of relic, the conservation treatment was performed for the stability of original shape. And we made the protection frame for the storage and exhibition.
