The digital data were obtained using Kennedy 9000 magnetic tape deck which was connected to the SMS960 side scan sonar during the field operations. The data of three consecutive survey tracks near Seongsan-po, Cheju were used for the development of this study. The softwares were mainly written in Fortran-77 using VAX 11/780 MINI-COMPUTER (CPU Memory; 4MB). The established mapping system consists of the pretreatment and the digital processing of seafloor image data. The pretreatment was necessary because the raw digital data format of the field magnetic tapes was not compatible to the VAX system. Therefore the raw data were read by the personal computer using the Assembler language and the data format was converted to IBM compatible, and next data were communicated to the VAX system. The digital processing includes geometrical correction for slant range, statistical analysis and cartography of the seafloor image. The sound speed in the water column was assumed 1,500 m/sec for the slant range correction and the moving average method was used for the signal trace smoothing. Histograms and cumulative curves were established for the statistical analysis, that was purposed to classify the backscattering strength from the sea-bottom. The seafloor image was displayed on the color screen of the TEKTRONIX 4113B terminal. According to the brief interpretation of the result image map, rocky and sedimentary bottoms were very well discriminated. Also it was shown that the backscattered acoustic pressurecorrelateswith the grain size and sorting of surface sediments.
The levee protect lifes, houses, and properties by blocking overflow of river. The revetment is forced to be covered on the slope of levee in order to prevent erosion. The stability of revetment is very important enough to directly connected to the stability of levee. In this study, the weak points of revetment on meandering channel were found by movable revetment experiment and the velocity and the water surface elevation (WSE) were measured at main points. The 3-D numerical simulations were performed under same conditions with experiment. And unclear flow characteristics by the limit of measuring instruments were analyzed through numerical simulation. Consequently, the section of large wall shear stress and the failure section are almost the same. Despite of small wall shear stress, the revetments located at right bank were carried away because of circulation zone due to secondary flow by meandering. With existing riprap design formula, the sizes of riprap determined using maximum local velocity were 1.5~4.7 times greater than them using mean velocity. As a result of this study, it is necessary to calculate the size of riprap in other ways for meandering and straight channel. At a later study, if the weighted value considered the radius of curvature and shape of hydraulic structure is applied to riprap design formula, it is expected that the size of revetment was evaluated rationally and accurately.
Light microscope, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to investigate the fine structure of sperm of the Korea squirrel, Tamias sibiricus. The sperm head of T. sibiricus was paddle in shape. The total length of T. sibiricus sperm was 67.8 ${\mu}m$. The length of sperm head was 7.8 ${\mu}m$, and the tail (60.0 ${\mu}m$) was consisted of four major segments: the neck (1.0 ${\mu}m$), middle (8.0 ${\mu}m$), principal (48.5 ${\mu}m$) and end piece (2.5 ${\mu}m$), respectively. Especially, the length of the middle piece is short, and end piece was very shorter than those of other rodents. The post-nuclear cap was occupied about a fifth of nucleus. The equatorial segment is located between the post-nuclear cap segment and acrosomal cap on the nuclear surface. Nine segmented columns were surrounded by the mitochondria, and numbers of gyres of mitochondria were 26. One segmented column was consisted ten to twelve knobs, and each of segmented column in the neck region connected with the nine outer dense fiber in the middle piece. Numerous satellite-like fibers were scattered around the segmented columns. Nos. 1, 5 and 6 of the outer dense fibers in the middle piece were larger than the others. A fibrous sheath and longitudinal column of the principal piece were in evidence, but the fibrous sheath and longitudinal column was not seen at the end piece. In conclusion, the structural features of sperm head and tail may be useful information to patterns of sperm evolution and classification of species.
Granular gland regeneration in the toad after dorsal skin wound histologically was examined using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. After cutaneous wounds were induced by excision, animals were maintained in special cages for up to 20 days. In transmission electron microscopy (TEM), newly formed granular gland, though poorly developed, was seen on 4 day after injury. Epithelial cells moved toward apical region of newly formed gland. The cells had smooth surface and were not connected to other cells by desmosomes. Mitochondria rich cell (MRC) possessing long cytoplasmic processes formed a gland cavity and hemidesmosomes were found under the cell processes. Basal cavity of newly formed gland consisted of MRC, pro-granular producing cells (pGPC), and granular producing cell (GPC). Moreover it was observed that xanthophores moved to the base of the epithelial tissue on 10 day after the injury. These cells contained numerous pterinosomes and carotenoid vesicles. Immature pterinosomes were large and carotenoid vesicles were moderately electron dense. On 13 day after the injury, xanthophores contained abundant carotinoid vesicles and lammelated pterinosomes. Iridophores were also observed adjacent the developing xanthophores on 16 day post-injury. These observations indicated that regeneration of granular gland from glandular precursor cells during wound healing and subsequent expansion of the glandular cells might be dependent on maturation and proliferation of these newly formed cells.
The biomimetic approach on the cuticular spinning nozzles of the major ampullate silk glands in the golden-web spider Nephila calvata has been attempted using various visualizing techniques of light and electron microscopes to improve the design of spinning nozzle for producing synthetic nanofibers spun from electrospinning apparatus. The major ampullate spigot which has the most effective nozzle system to produce nanofibers for dragline silk with high strength and elasticity is connected via the bullet type spigot on anterior spinneret with flexible terminal segment. The excretory duct which transports the liquid silk feedstock from ampulla to spigot is divided into 3 limbs by loops back on itself to form an S-shape morphology that is bundled in connective tissue. Final diameter of the nanofibers at nozzle was dramatically reduced by gradual narrowing of duct cuticle less than 10 times comparing to its original size of funnel region. Moreover, the funnel has a characteristic cuticular organization with porous microstructure which seems to be related to water removal from feedstock of silk precursors. High magnification electron micrographs also reveal the presence of the spiral grooves on the surface of the cuticular intima near the valve which presumed to reduce friction during rapid flow of liquid silk.
This study was carried out to improve the performance of pre-developed heat recovery devices attached to exhaust-gas flue connected to combustion chamber of greenhouse heating system. Four different units were compared in the aspect of heat recovery performance; A-, B-, and C-types are exactly the same with the old ones reported in previous studies. D-type newly developed in this experiment is mainly different with the old ones in its heat exchange area and tube thickness. But airflow direction(U-turn) and pipe arrangement are similar with previous three types. The results are summarized as follows; 1. System performances in the aspect of heat recovery efficiency were estimated as 42.2% for A-type, 40.6% for B-type, 54.4% for C-type, and 69.2% for D-type. 2. There was not significant improvement of heat recovering efficiency between two different airflow directions inside the heat exchange system. But considering current technical conditions, straight air flow pattern has more advantage than hair-pin How pattern (U-turn f1ow). 3. The main factors influencing on heat recovery efficiency were presumably verified to be the total area of heat exchange surface, the thickness of ail-flow pipes, and the convective heat transfer coefficient influenced by airflow velocity under the conditions of allowable pipe durability and safety. 4. Desirable blower capacity for each type of heat recovery units were significantly different to each other. Therefore, the optimum airflow capacity should be determined by considering in economic aspect of electricity required together with the optimum heat recovery performance of given heat recovery systems.
In this study, metal copper clad laminate can be prepared using epoxy composite filled with thermally conductive fillers. In order to improve the thermal conductivity of epoxy composites, it is important factor to form conductive networks through appropriate packing of conductive fillers in epoxy composite matrix and to decrease the amount of thermally resistant junctions involving a epoxy composite matrix layer between adjacent filler units. This is because epoxy has a thermal conductivity of only 0.2-0.3W, so in order to maintain high thermal conductivity, thermally conductive fillers are connected to each other, so that the gap between particles can be reduced to reduce thermal resistance. The purpose of this study is to find way to achieve highly thermally conductive in the epoxy composite matrix filled with Al2O3 and Boron Nitride(BN) filler by filler loading and uniform dispersion. As a results, the use of Al2O3/BN hybrid filler in epoxy matrix was found to be effective in increasing thermal conductivity of epoxy composite matrix due to the enhanced connectivity offered by more continuous thermally conductive pathways and uniform dispersion without interfacial voids in epoxy composite matrix. In addition, surface treatmented s-BN improves the filler dispersion and adhesion between the filler and the epoxy matrix, which can significantly decrease the interfacial thermal resistance and increase the thermal conductivity of epoxy composite matrix.
The purpose of this study was to qunatatively analyze the stress patterns induced in the abutment, superstructure, supporting bone and to determine the deflection of abutment and superstructure by appling occlusal force to natural teeth supported fixed prostheses and implant-supported fixed prostheses. The analysis has been conducted by using the two dimensional finite element method. The implant and natural tooth-supported bridge has a first molar pontic supported by mandibular second bicuspid and implant posterior retainer, which were rigidly(Model A) or flexible(Model B). The natural teeth-supported bridge has a first molar pontic supported by mandibular second bicuspid and second molar, which were rigidly splinted together(Model C). 63.5kg(Load P1) of localized load on central fossa of first molar pontic and 24kg(Load P2) of distributed load on each occlusal surface were applied respectively. 1. The coronal portion of premolar pontic and posterior abutment in fixed partial denture deflected inferiorly in order of Model B, Model C and Model A under Load P1 and Load P2. 2. Mesial displacement of the coronal portion of premolar showed in Model A, Model B and Model C under Load P1, but mesial displacement of that in Model B and distal displacement of that in Model A and Model C showed under Load P2. 3. Mesial displacement of the coronal portion of the pontic and distal displacement of the coronal portion of posterior abutment showed in Model A, Model B and Model C under Load P1 and Load P2. Displacement in the case of Model B was greater than that of Model A and Model C. 4. In the case Model A under Load P1 and Load P2, high stress apically was concentrated in the mesiocervical portion of the posterior abutment than in the disto-cervical portion of the premolar. 5. In the case of Model B under Load P1 and Load P2 high stress was concentrated in the case of the premolar than in that of posterior abutment and high stress especially was concentrated in the connected portion of pontic and posterior abutment. 6. In the case of Model C under Load P1 and Load P2, high stress was concentrated in the distal area of the cornal portion of premolar and the mesial area of the coronal portion of posterior abutment, and stress pattern was anteroposterially symmetric around the pontic. 7. Load P1 and Load P2 compared, stress magnitude was different but stress pattern was similar in Model A, Model B and Model C. 8. Under Load P1 and P2, stress magnitude in the mesial distal portion and the portion of root apex of the posterior abutment was in order of Model B, Model A and Model C.
Statement of problem. Unreasonable distal cantilevered implant-supported prosthesis can mask functional problems of reconstruction temporarily, but it can cause serious strain and stress around its supported implant and surrounding alveolar bone. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate strain of implants supporting distal cantilevered fixed prosthesis with two different cantilevered length under distal cantilevered static load. Material and methods. A partially edentulous mandibular test model was fabricated with auto-polymerizing resin (POLYUROCK; Metalor technologies, Stuttgart, Swiss) and artificial denture teeth (Endura; Shofu inc., Kyoto, Japan). Two implants-supported 5-unit screw-retained cantilevered fixed prosthesis was made using standard methods with Type III gold alloy (Harmony C&B55; Ivoclar-vivadent, Liechtenstein, Germany) for superstructure and reinforced hard resin (Tescera; Ivoclar-vivadent, Liechtenstein, Germany) for occlusal material. Two strain gauges (KFG-1-120-C1-11L1M2R; KYOWA electronic instruments, Tokyo, Japan) were then attached to the mesial and the distal surface of each standard abutment with adhesive (M-bond 200; Tokuyama, Tokyo, Japan). Total four strain gauges were attached to test model and connected to dynamic signal conditioning strain amplifier (CTA1000; Curiotech inc., Paju, Korea). The stepped $20{\sim}100$ N in 25 N increments, cantilevered static load 8mm apart (Group I) or 16mm apart (Group II), were applied using digital push-pull gauge (Push-Pull Scale & Digital Force Gauge, Axis inc., Seoul, Korea). Each step was performed ten times and every strain signal was monitored and recorded. Results. In case of Group I, the strain values were surveyed by $80.7{\sim}353.8{\mu}m$ in Ch1, $7.5{\sim}47.9{\mu}m/m$ in Ch2, $45.7{\sim}278.6{\mu}m/m$ in Ch3 and $-212.2{\sim}718.7{\mu}m/m$ in Ch4 depending on increasing cantilevered static load. On the other hand, the strain values of Group II were surveyed by $149.9{\sim}612.8{\mu}m/m$ in Ch1, $26.0{\sim}168.5{\mu}m/m$ in Ch2, $114.3{\sim}632.3{\mu}m/m$ in Ch3, and $-323.2{\sim}-894.7{\mu}m/m$ in Ch4. Conclusion. A comparative statistical analysis using paired sample t-test about Group I Vs Group II under distal cantilevered load shows that there are statistical significant differences for all 4 channels (P<0.05).
Statement of problem. The performance and maintenance of implant-supported prostheses are primarily dependent upon load transmission both at the bone-to-implant interface and within the implant-abutment-prosthesis complex. The design of the interface between components has been shown to have a profound influence on the stability of screw joints. Purpose. The Purpose of this study was to compare the strength and the fatigue resistance of 1-piece and 2-piece abutment connected to oral implant, utilizing an internal conical interface. Material and methods. Twenty $Implatium^{(R)}$ tapered implants were embedded to the top of the fixture in acrylic resin blocks. Ten $Combi^{(R)}$(1-piece) and $Dual^{(R)}$(2-piece) abutments of the same dimension were assembled to the implant, respectively. The assembled units were mounted in a testing machine. A load was applied perpendicular to the long axis of the assemblies and the loading points was at the distance of 7mm from the block surface. Half of 1-piece and 2-piece abutment-implant units were tested for the evaluation of the bending strength, and the others were cyclically loaded for the evaluation of the fatigue resistance until plastic deformation occurred. Nonparametric statistical analysis was performed for the results. Results. Mean plastic and maximum bending moment were $1,900{\pm}18Nmm,\;3,609{\pm}106Nmm$ for the 1-piece abutment, and $1,250{\pm}31Nmm,\;2,688{\pm}166Nmm$ for the 2-piece abutment, respectively. Mean cycles and standard deviation when implant-abutment joint showed a first plastic deformation were $238,610{\pm}44,891$. cycles for the 1-piece abutment and $9,476{\pm}3,541$ cycles for the 2-piece abutment. A 1-piece abutment showed significantly higher value than a 2-piece abutment in the first plastic bending moment (p<.05), maximum bending moment (p<.05) and fatigue strength (p<.05). Conclusion. Both 1-piece and 2-piece conical abutment had high strength and fatigue resistance and this suggests long-term durability without mechanical complication. However, the 1-piece conical abutment was more stable than the 2-piece conical abutment in the strength and the fatigue resistance.
