  • This research aims at evaluating the seismic performance of the existing R/C bridge piers which were nonseismically or seismically designed in accordance with the provision of Korea Highway Design Specification. Further experimental investigations have been doing to figure out the retrofitting effects of nonseismic R/C bridge piers confined with glass fiber at the plastic hinge zone. Pseudo-dynamic tests have been carried out on nine scaled R/C column specimens to investigate their hysteretic behavior under earthquake loading, Test parameters are axial load input ground motion confinement steel ration glass fiber and etc,

  • Strategies to facilitate carrier transfer/transport while preserving confined characteristics of isolated nanocrystal quantum dots (NQDs) will be discussed. Specifically, synthesis and characterizations of 1) the fabrication of neat NQD solids (assembled NQD films) with modified surfaces by attaching ligands or by applying physical processes such as heat annealing [J. Phys. Chem. C (2011), 115(3), 607] and 2) coupling NQDs to one-dimensional nanostructures such as single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) [ACS Nano, (2010) 4(1), 324] will be presented. Further, recent achievement ours of fabricating NQDs assemblies into photovoltaic devices for elucidating transfer mechanism witll be discussed.

  • The classical molecular dynamics simulation was used to study the phase transition of gold nanoparticles under confinement using Sutton-Chen (SC) potential. Metal gold nanoparticles with different number of atoms are subject to replica exchange molecular dynamics simulation for this purpose. The simulation showing the solidto-liquid melting temperature largely remains unaffected by confinement, while the confinement induces characteristic pre-melting at very low temperature depending on atom number in nanoparticles.

  • Optical telecommunication has been growing at a rate that exceeds even the "Moore′s Law". However, while the electronic revolution has allowed everyone to have his/her own PC, the optical revolution is still confined to the long-haul network such that the individual end users are still connected to an electronic metro/access networks. However, given the rapid increase in the data traffic (e.g., multimedia), the optical edge that separates the individual end users from optical networks will eventually have to include the metro/acces networks. • Recently, the Carbon Fiber Sheet(CFS) is widely used to structure. But the behavior of the concrete column which is strengthened with the CFS is not clearly defined yet. This study presents the result of experimental studies on the stress-strain behavior and the strengthening effect of laterally confined concrete by Carbon Fiber Sheets(CFS) subject to compression. In this experimental study, included three-parameters, which are the number of the sheets, the laminated angle of sheets, and concrete strength.

  • Benign monomelic amyotrophy(BMA) is an uncommon cause of progressive mildly disabling atrophy and weakness of a limb. It predominantly affects the distal upper limb of young men. I present two men with BMA of the lower extremities. Although the disorder seemed clinically confined to a arm or leg, I confirmed by electromyography evidence of denervation in the other extremities. I reviewed the literatures and discuss the differential diagnosis. BMA is a diagnosis of exclusion that requires consideration in men with unilateral arm or leg atrophy and weakness.

  • A case of bronchogenic cyst arising from an accessory lobe in a 7-month old baby was encountered at Seoul University Hospital. On exploration, right lung consisted of 4 lobes and a huge cyst was confined to an accessory lobe, which had no bronchial connection. The cyst was filled with jelly-like thick mucus; inner surface was glistening and smooth. Microscopically, the cyst was lined with pseudostratified columnar epithelium. Bronchogenic cyst, moreover, which arising from an accessory lobe is very rare and interesting. And so, case report and review of literature was made.
