  • The purpose of this study was to suggest methods to apply generalizability theory to mathematics teacher evaluation using classroom observations in Korea by analysing mathematics teachers in the U.S. using the instructional quality of assessment instrument as an illustrative example. The subjects were 96 teachers participating in Year 3 and Year 4 from the Middle-school Mathematics and the Institutional Setting of Teaching (MIST) project funded by the National Science Foundation since 2007. The MIST project investigates the following question: What does it takes to support mathematics teachers' development of ambitious and equitable instructional practices on a large scale (MIST, 2007). This study examined data based on both the univariate generalizability analysis using GENOVA program and the multivariate generalizability analysis using mGENOVA program. Specifically, this study determined the relative effects of each error source and investigated optimal measuring conditions to obtain the suitable generalizability coefficients. The methodology applied in this study can be utilized to find effective optimal measurement conditions for the mathematics teacher evaluation for professional development in Korea. Finally, this study discussed limitations of the results and suggested directions for future research.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between an infant teachers' efficacy and job stress by demographic variables to provide the data for improving job conditions and teacher education. For this study, teachers who work in the childcare center located in Gyeongsangbukdo participated in a survey. The questionnaire was distributed from March 11. 2013 to March 29. 2013. The results were as follows; first, an infant class childcare teachers' efficacy was above average and general efficacy was higher than personal efficacy. There were significant differences in personal variable(age, marital status) and working condition(the type of facility, average working hours, average wage, the number of children). Second, an infant class childcare teachers' job stress was above average and that depended on the economy, the infant's parents, work, infant, individual, administration, and co-workers in decreasing order of influence. The job stress was significant differences in personal variable(age, martial status, experience, number of completed training) and working variable(the type of facility, average working hours, the number of children, average wage). These results indicate that improvement in the infant class childcare teachers' efficacy is more important than anything else in promoting their job conditions.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the stress factors experienced by science teachers and stress related to science teaching. To do these, I have developed the Science Teacher Stress Inventory, which consisted of 50 stress factors with subcategories such as student characteristics, teacher characteristics, school environment, administrative procedures, and conditions of service. 104 science teachers have participated in this questionnaire survey. Additionally, I got 109 stress cases related to science teaching from surveys of 25 science teachers. Results are as follows: first, stress from students characteristic and administrative procedures are perceived as having more stress factors than teacher characteristics, school environment, and conditions of service. Second, stress in affective domains such as students' low motivation in science and insincere class attitude is perceived as having more stress factors than stress in cognitive domain. Third, female science teachers are significantly more stressed than male science teachers. Fourth, students' low motivation and low understanding in science learning are the most stressful factors in stress related to science teaching. Fifth, science teachers feel more stress in evaluation such as experiment test and joint-set exam questions.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the mental health and presenteeism of early childhood teachers and to explore the effects of working conditions and job satisfaction on these. Methods: Data from the 4thKorean Work Environment Survey were used. The sample consisted of 474 female early-childhood teachers from private facilities. Mental health was measured using the WHO-Wellbeing Index. Presenteeism was attributed to a participant upon indication that, during the past 12 months, she had ever attended work, despite being sick. The data by complex sample design were analyzed through the Rao-Scott $x^2$ test and logistic regression analysis. Results: 37.9% of early childhood teachers reported poor mental health and 34.2% had experienced presenteeism. Early childhood teachers in permanent employment, who did not work evening shifts, and with sustainable jobs, were more likely to have better mental health. Moreover, those in permanent employment and remunerated appropriately were less likely to experience presenteeism. Conclusion: Type of employment, number of days working in the evening, and job sustainability affect mental health. Further, type of employment, number of workers, and being well paid have an effect on presenteeism. We suggest that improved working conditions should precede the improvement of early-childhood teachers' mental health.

  • The study aims to assess needs of administrative and financial support for effective performance of teacher professionalism of gifted. For this end, practicing teachers of gifted education were nationwide selected for survey questionnaires. The first survey of five-scale Likert item was conducted in July 2005 with 236 teachers and the second survey of open-ended item was done in November 2005 with 123 teachers. All the respondents provided their perceptions to current status of administrative and financial support for gifted education and needs for their effective performance of professionalism. Suggestions for improving conditions of administration and finance in terms of effective performance of teacher professionalism in gifted education were as follows: First, teachers should be assigned as full-time for gifted education. Otherwise, their teaching hours and other related jobs should be, reduced Second, the financial support for gifted education should be increased, in particular, more in provincial areas than metropolitan cities. Third, appropriate grouping and counseling according to diverse differences of students should be done. Fourth, understanding of principals and teachers in general education as well as parents and general public toward gifted education should be improved through inservice education program and other education programs. Further, teachers of gifted education should be provided with more frequent opportunities for participating inservice programs in quality, share knowledge and experiences among teachers through network systems, and be given appropriate incentives for better performance of professionalism.

  • The purpose of this study was to survey the elementary school teachers' thoughts of the classification criteria for evaporation and boiling concept in the heating and non-heating conditions. For this purpose, we conducted a survey and interviews with 37 elementary school teachers. When the heating conditions were presented, many teachers thought evaporation phenomena as boiling. In opposite condition, many teachers thought boiling phenomena as evaporation. This means that teachers‘ thought of boiling phenomena was connected with heating conditions and evaporation phenomena with non-heating conditions. In addition, the classification criteria to distinguish evaporation and boiling phenomena depending on the heating and non-heating conditions were not coherent. In this study, we suggested that a various cases beyond the typical case must be presented in the textbooks and teaching in order to avoid confusion of thoughts related to evaporation and boiling concepts.

  • The purpose of this study is: 1) to determine error sources and the effects of each error source, 2) to investigate optimal measuring conditions from holistic and analytic scoring methods, and 3) to compare the value of reliability between Cronbach's alpha and the generalizability coefficient in self-introduction letter and teacher's recommendation letter based on the generalizability theory in identification of mathematical gifted students by observations and nominations. Data of this study were collected from the science education institute for the gifted attached to the university located within in a capital city for the 2011 academic year. Scores form two raters using holistic and analytic scoring methods in both assessment types were used. The results of this study were as follows. First, as to both assessment types, error sources for people were relatively large regardless of scoring methods. However, error sources for raters in holistic scoring methods had a more significant impact than those of analytic scoring methods. Second, to set optimal measuring conditions in the self-introduction letter and teacher's recommendation letter, if we fixed the number of raters into 2 based on holistic scoring methods, at least 5 and 10 content domains were needed, respectively. In addition, the number of items in teacher's recommendation letter should be more than 3 when we fixed the number of content domains into 4, and the number of items in self-introduction letter should be more than 8 when we fixed the number of content domains into 6 using analytic scoring methods. Third, Cronbach's alpha having only a single source of errors was higher than the generalizability coefficient regardless of assessment types and scoring methods. Hence we recommend that generalizability coefficient based on various error sources such as raters, content domains, and items should be considered to keep a satisfactory level of reliability in both assessment types.

  • The purpose of this study was to obtain basic information for novice teachers' adjustment. The data from five novice teachers were collected by in-depth interviews of each subject, as well as reviewing a memo diary, journal and class diary. The results indicated that the novice teachers' experiences were categorized into difficulties in social relationships, heavy workload, stress related to making mistakes, obtaining support and assistance, adequate understanding of their field of work and so on. The model theory for their process of adjustment was found by grounded theory approach. The causal conditions include mistakes in performance of work and immaturity of managing social relationships. The contexts include age of the children, work conditions(i.e. time and space), amount of workload, unfamiliarity of new work assignments, personalities of colleagues, and high frequency of meeting parents of children. The intervening conditions are composed of a guidance program for novice teachers, support from colleagues, work rewards, and the personalities of novice teachers. The novice teacher use three strategies: trying to ignore, sharing difficulties and accessing support from friends or family, as well as willful efforts to transfer negative emotions into positive ones. The consequences of the strategies include: successful career progression, survival, and desire for leaving the field of work.

  • The elementary schools which have played the role as core institution of farming and fishing area and the central of community are either unionized nor abolished. These appearances are showed from not only certain area but all throughout the nation. This is to investigate the abolition of elementary schools and the practical use device through the conditions of elementary schools in Chonnam area. Such problems like school carrying out or schooling course and teacher supply and demand outbreaks in the areas of school attendance population rapidly decrease. These kind of problems should be solved by linked to true character of local area, maintenance & preservation of property value, balanced expansion of the country instead of simple school attendance population decrease and abolition of school. The practical device for rapidly coming school abolition and many related problems are urgently needed. And to solve all these kind of problums, First, enough examinations before the fact and communication & agreement with local residents will be needed. Second, basic dierction of device for usage of school after abolition school should be selected.
