This study was conducted to evaluate water treatment characteristics according to vegetated wetland(V) and open water(O) arrangements in free water surface constructed wetland. Three pilot-scale wetlands, V-V, O-V and V-O, were built and operated. $BOD_5$ was a slightly reduced at all the arrangements because the influent concentration was so low as background concentration of constructed wetlands. While T-N and T-P removal efficiency showed higher than 50% for all cases. The O-V arrangement showed the highest removal efficiency: 20% for $BOD_5$, 56% for SS, 59% for T-N and 72% for T-P. Effluent concentration of the O-V were significantly low compared with those from the V-O. O-V arrangement would be beneficial in the light of pollutant removal efficiency as well as construction cost.
The liquid-liquid extraction of lipase A from Candide cylindracea and lipase B from porcine pancrease was carried out using reversed micellar organic solvents. Effects of various factors such as ionic strength, pH, and species and concentration of surfactant, on lipase solubilization were studied. A cationic surfactant cetyl-trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) in isooctane/nhexanol(1:1) was found to be an effective solvent and its optimum concentration was 50 mM. KCl among various salts tested was the most effective and the efficiency of solubilization of lipase increased with decreasing the ionic strength of salts. The maximum activity and solubiliz ation of protein were obtained at pH 8. The stripping efficiency has a maximum value at pH 4 and increases with KCl concentration in the range of 0.2∼1.0 M. After the solubilization and stripping, the overall recovery efficiency of mass and specific activity of lipases was 62% and 66%, respectively.
We investigated the effects of the thickness and doping concentration in p- and n-type poly-Si layers on the performance of a solar cell based on a carbon fiber in order to improve the energy conversion efficiency of the cell. The short-circuit current density and open-circuit voltage of the carbon fiber-based solar cell were significantly influenced by the thickness and doping concentration in the p- and n-type poly-Si layers. The solar cell efficiency was successfully enhanced to ~10.5%.
A mathematical model for a three phase fluidized bed bioreactor (TFBBR) was proposed to describe oxygen utilization rate, biomass concentration and the removal efficiency of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) in wastewater treatment. The model consisted of the biofilm model to describe the oxygen uptake rate and the hydraulic model to describe flow characteristics to cause the oxygen distribution in the reactor. The biofilm model represented the oxygen uptake rate by individual bioparticle and the hydrodynamics of fluids presented an axial dispersion flow with back mixing in the liquid phase and a plug flow in the gas phase. The difference of setting velocity along the column height due to the distributions of size and number of bioparticle was considered. The proposed model was able to predict the biomass concentration and the dissolved oxygen concentration along the column height. The removal efficiency of COD was calculated based on the oxygen consumption amounts that were obtained from the dissolved oxygen concentration. The predicted oxygen concentration by the proposed model agreed reasonably well with experimental measurement in a TFBBR. The effects of various operating parameters on the oxygen concentration were simulated based on the proposed model. The media size and media density affected the performance of a TFBBR. The dissolved oxygen concentration was significantly affected by the superficial liquid velocity but the removal efficiency of COD was significantly affected by the superficial gas velocity.

This Study has treated the effects of fiber, surfactants, temperature, surfactant concentration, pH, electrolyte, fatty acid contents and mechanical force on the removal of particulate soil from fabric, vacuum cleaner dirt was used as model particulate soil. The fabrics were soiled with mixture of vacuum cleaner dirt and fatty soil, and washed in Terg-O-tometer. The detergency was evaluated by measuring reflectance of a fabric before and after washing. The results were as follows. 1. The fiber type showed a different pattern of soil removal with surfactants. In general, particulate soil removal increased in the following order Acetate>PET. Nylon>Cotton. Particulate soil removal, which is affected by the surfactant type, increased in the following order NPE $(EO)_{10}\leqq$Soap>SLS>DBS>Tween 80. 2. The influence of temperature on the particulate soil removal was very complex because efficiency of removal was varied with surfactant and fiber types. The washing efficiency of NPE $(EO)_{10}$ was highest at around $40^{\circ}C\;and\;60^{\circ}C$ with cotton and PET but the washing efficiency of DBS was the highest at $60^{\circ}C$ with cotton, decreased monotonously with increasing temperature with PET 3. The detergency of particulate soil increased with increasing surfactant concentration at relatively low concentration and then levelled off above some optimum concentration. 4. The removal of particulate soil increased with increasing pH and mechanical force. 5. Effect of electrolyte on the particulate soil removal was depended on the concentration of the surfactant. At low concentration of surfactant, addition of electrolytes improved soil removal but above the some concentration no effect was observed. At high concentration of surfactant, Vie., $0.6\%$ , the maximum washing effect is reached without added electrolyte. These result indicate that added electrolyte only influence the adsorption of surfactant on the soil and fiber 6. Fatty acid content in the soil did not influence on particulate soil removal without regard to surfactants.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of salt concentration and turbidity on the inactivation of Artemia sp. by electrolysis, UV photolysis, electrolysis+UV process to treat ballast water in the presence of brackish water or muddy water caused by rainfall. The inactivation at different salt concentrations (30 g/L and 3 g/L) and turbidity levels (0, 156, 779 NTU) was compared. A decrease in salt concentration reduced RNO (OH radical generation index) degradation and TRO (Total Residual Oxidant) production, indicating that a longer electrolysis time is required to achieve a 100% inactivation rate in electrolysis process. In the UV process, the higher turbidity results in lower UV transmittance and lower inactivation efficiency of Artemia sp. Higher the turbidity resulted in lower ultraviolet transmittance in the UV process and lower inactivation efficiency of Artemia sp. A UV exposure time of over 30 seconds was required for 100% inactivation. Factors affecting inactivation efficiency of Artemia sp. in low salt concentration are in the order: electrolysis+UV > electrolysis > UV process. In the case of electrolysis+UV process, TRO is lower than the electrolysis process, but RNO is more decomposed, indicating that the OH radical has a greater effect on the inactivation effect. In low salt concentrations and high turbidity conditions, factors affecting Artemia sp. inactivation were in the order electrolysis > electrolysis+UV > UV process. When the salt concentration is low and the turbidity is high, the electrolysis process is affected by the salt concentration and the UV process is affected by turbidity. Therefore, the synergy due to the combination of the electrolysis process and the UV process was small, and the inactivation was lower than that of the single electrolysis process only affected by the salt concentration.
The results of the water purification studies using water parsley (Oenanthe javanica) were obtained as follows. The removal rate of nutrient salts increased with longer plant growth periods. The results of this study use the assumption, log(T+1) = $K(C_0-C)^A$, based on Prakish's Theory. The initial concentration was calculated from experimental data. A and K are closely related to the initial concentration. It is possible to model the concentration of residual salts, as time goes by, if concentration is constant. It was observed that water parsley neutralizes acid and alkali substances promptly. The maximum suitable neutralization period is 48 hours. But water parsley withered up in strong acid and alkali solutions within a week. The removal efficiency of Cd progresses in 2 steps, which are unrelated to the initial concentration of Cd. The first part of the curve shows the concentration rapid rate of Cd removal, followed by a levelling off. The removal rate of $NO_x-N$ in the sample water tank containing 0.5 ppm Cd was between 50~80% but the removal rate was less than 20% for the higher concentration. On the other hand, increased amounts of $PO_4-P$ in the sample water tank from the third day on suspected that $PO_4-P$ was desorbed from the water parsley. The accumulation efficiency of Cd in plant was increased in proportion to the initial concentration of Cd. The accumulation phenomenon was observed in the tanks more than 50~100 times.
The size distribution and number concentration of atmospheric aerosol were measured and compared using APS 3321 and Dust Monitor 1.108. The particle size distribution and number concentration measured by two devices were also compared at a particle generation system of standard PSL and fly ash. The number concentration of atmospheric aerosol measured by APS was higher than that by Dust Monitor in particle size range of less than $3.0{\mu}m$, but there was good accordance between them in particle size range of over $3.0{\mu}m$. In the particle generation system of PSL and fly ash, different measurement results were shown because the particle concentration was higher than that of atmospheric aerosol. The number concentration measured by Dust Monitor was higher than that by APS in most particle size ranges. However, the peak concentration of PSL particles measured by Dust Monitor was lower than that by APS. The difference of the collection efficiency in a scrubber by APS and Dust Monitor measurement was less than 10%, but in the particle size of $1.5{\mu}m$, it was over 20%.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the nitrification characteristics of biological aerated filter (BAF) packed with ceramic media, especially focusing on nitrite build-up during nitrification. When increasing the nitrogen load above $1.63kgNH_4{^+}-N/m^3{\cdot}d$, ammonium removal efficiency decreased to less than 60% and the nitrite ratio ($NO_2{^-}-N/NO_x-N$) of higher than 75% was achieved due to the inhibitory free ammonia (FA, $NH_3-N$) concentration and oxygen limitation. FA inhibition, however, is not recommended strategy to promote nitrite build-up since FA concentration in the reactor is coupled with decreased ammonium removal efficiency. Nitrite ratio in the effluent was also affected by aeration rate and influent ammonium concentration. Ammonium oxidation was enhanced at a higher aeration rate regardless of influent ammonium concentration but, the nitrite ratio was dependent on both aeration rate and influent ammonium concentration. While a higher nitrite ratio was obtained when BAFs were fed with $50mgNH_4{^+}-N/L$ of influent, the nitrite ratio significantly decreased for a greater influent concentration of $200-300mgNH_4{^+}-N/L$. Taken together, aeration rate, influent ammonium concentration and FA concentrations kept in the BAF were found to be critical variables for nitrite accumulation in the BAF system.
Alginate microspheres, containing fluorescein isothiocyanate-bovine serum albumin (FITC-BSA) or green fluorescent protein (GFP) were prepared and used as a model drug to develop the oral vaccine delivery system. The alginate microspheres were coated with poly-L-lysine or chitosan. Two methods, w/o-emulsion and spray, were used to prepare alginate microspheres. To optimize preparation conditions, effects of several factors on the particle size and particle morphology of microsphere, and loading efficiency of model antigen were investigated. In both preparation methods, the particle size and the loading efficiency were enhanced when the concentration of sodium alginate increased. In the w/o-emulsion preparation method, as the concentration of Span 80 was increased from 0.5% to 2%, the particle size was decreased, but the loading efficiency was increased. The higher the emulsification speed was, the smaller the particle size and loading efficiency were. The concentration of calcium chloride did not show any effect on the particle size and loading efficiency. In the spray preparation method, the particle size was increased as the nozzle pressure $(from\;1\;kgf/m^2\;to\;3\;kgf/m^2)$ and spray rate was raised. Increasing calcium chloride concentration (<7%) decreased the particle size, in contrast to no effect of calcium chloride concentration on the w/o-emulsion preparation method. Alginate microspheres prepared by two methods were different in the particle size and loading efficiency, the particle size of microspheres prepared by the spray method was about $2-6\;{\mu}m$, larger than that prepared by the w/o emulsion method $(about\;2{\mu}m)$, and the loading efficiency was also higher with spray method. Furthermore, drying process for the microspheres prepared by the spray was simpler and easier, compared with the w/o emulsion preparation. Therefore, the spray method was chosen to prepare alginate microspheres for further experiments. Release pattern of FITC-BSA in alginate microspheres was evaluated in simulated intestinal fluid and PBS (phosphate buffered saline). Dissolution rate of FITC-BSA from alginate/chitosan microsphere was lower than that from alginate microsphere and alginate/poly-L-lysine microsphere. By confocal laser scanning microscope, it was revealed that alginate/FITC-poly-L-lysine microspheres were present in close apposition epithelium of the Peyer's patches of rabbits following inoculation into lumen of intestine, which proved that microspheres could be taken up by Peyer's patch. In conclusion, it is suggested that alginate microsphere prepared by spray method, showing a particle size of & $10\;{\mu}m$ and a high loading efficiency, can be used as a model drug for the development of oral vaccine delivery system.
