A research program was initiated at the University of Colorado at Boulder to develop computational models that can be used for seismic risk assessments. To assess the overall performance of bridge structures including the nonlinear effects of bridge piers, the research focused on two levels of capabilities, i.e. global and local pier levels. A 3-D concrete model was used to evaluate the behavior of individual piers under combined axial, bending, and shear loadings using 3-D finite element analysis. Whereby the response curve reached the peak strength of the R/C column under the constant axial and monotonically increasing lateral loads. Experimental results on reinforced concrete bridge piers, which were obtained at the University of California at San Diego were used to validate the seismic performance of bridge piers at the two levels, globa1 and local.

During the rapid economic growth in Korea since the 1970s, many underground facilities were constructed such as under passes and railways. Seismic design has been mandated in 1988, but the structures built before 1988 were not reflected on the seismic design. Accordingly, these underground structures require effective seismic reinforcing methods to ensure safety when the earthquake happens. By these reasons, in this study, using the proposed pre-flexed members, RC box structure was analyzed for seismic reinforcement of the corner. This method is based on a principle that enlarging the resistance against the external force by installing the pre-flexed member to the box structure corner. To evaluate validity, a newly developed member with CornerSafe was compared with traditional type reinforcement using experiments and finite element analysis. In finite element mode, nonlinearity of steel was modeled based on J2 plasticity model and concrete was based on CEB FIP MODEL CODE 1990. Also, composite ratios of box and pre-flexed member were computed for design application. The reinforcement and box structure were analyzed under the bond condition completely attached by the tie, and the results of experiment and finite element analysis were same in the force-displacement curve.

The aim of the present paper is to develop a computer program predicting ultimate fracture strength of initially cracked structure under monotonically increasing external loads. For this purpose, two kinds of 3-D isoparametric solid elements, one 6-node wedge element and another 8-node brick element are formulated along the small deformation theory. Plasticity in the element is checked using von Mises' yield criterion. Elasto-plastic stiffness matrix of the element is calculated taking account of strain hardening effect. If the principal strain at crack tip which is one nodal point exceeds the critical strain dependin on the material property, crack tip is supposed to be opened and the crack tip node which was previously constrained in the direction perpendicular to the crack line is released. After that, the crack lay be propagated to the adjacent node. Once a crack tip node is fractured, the energy of the newly fractured node should be released which is to be absorbed by the remaining part. The accumulated reaction force which was carried by the newly fractured node so far is then applied in the opposite direction. During the action of crack tip relief force, since unloading may be occured in the plastic element, unloading check should be made. If a plastic element unloads, elastic stress-strain equation is used in the calculation of the stiffness matrix of the element, while for a loading element, elasto-plastic stress-strain equation is continuously used. Verification of the computer program is made comparing with the experimental results for center cracked panel subjected to uniform tensile load. Also some factors affecting ultimate fracture strength of initially cracked plate are investigated. It is concluded that the computer program developed here gives an accurate solution and becomes useful tool for predicting ultimate fracture load of initially cracked structural system under monotonically increasing external loads.

Plastic gradient from geometrically necessary dislocation(GND) can affect material behavior significantly. In this research, mechanical behavior of polycrystalline solid is investigated using the finite element method incorporating plastic gradient from long range dislocation or GND effect. Plastic gradient effect is implemented in the analysis model by considering a long range strain term as well as elastic and plastic terms in the multiplicative decomposition. In the model, gradient hardness coefficient and length parameter are used to evaluate the effect of the long range strains and sensitive study is conducted for the parameters. It is confirmed that the GND amplifies hardening response of polycrystals compared with the single crystal.

In this paper single degree of freedom macro-element model was presented to investigate the interaction between soil and the deep foundation under the lateral loads. It was made by modelling each component related to the soil-structure interaction and combining them into one piece. It enhanced the conventional method that was not able to break down the interaction components in piece due to the usage of simple spring element for interaction. A proposed macro-element classified the stress components in relation to the interaction into frictional and compressive resistance. Each component was modelled using the classical plasticity theory, and finally combined in parallel. An example study was carried out using the proposed macro-element for deep foundation embedded in three layered cohesive soil. It showed improved results compared to the conventional method by producing additional information of the interaction components as well as the overall behavior of foundation.
This paper presents practical notional-load plastic-hinge method for a two-dimensional steel structure design. The proposed method incorporates the refined plastic-hinge concept for spread of plasticity together with a practical notional-load approach. The proposed method can assess realistically both strength and behavior of a structural system and its individual members in a direct manner. As a result, the method can be used for design without tedious separate member capacity checks, including the calculation of K-factor. The strengths predicted by the proposed method are then compared with those predicted by the exact plastic-zone analysis as well as by the conventional LRFD procedure. A good agreement is generally observed. The displacement predictions are compared with the plastic-zone solutions. Analysis and design guidelines in using the proporsed method are given in detail. Analysis and design procedures are recommended. Member sizes determined by the proposed method are compared with those determined by the LRFD method. It is concluded that the procedures are suitable for adoption in practice.

304L stainless steel sheets are used as a primary barrier for the insulation of membrane-type liquefied natural gas(LNG) carrier cargo containment system. 304L stainless steel is a transformation-induced-plasticity(TRIP) steel that exhibits complex material behavior, because it undergoes phase transformation during plastic deformation. Since the TRIP behavior is very important mechanical characteristics in a low-temperature environment, significant amounts of data are available in the literature. In the present study, a uniaxial tensile test for 304L stainless steel was performed to investigate nonlinear mechanical characteristics. In addition, a viscoplastic model and damage model is proposed to predict material fractures under arbitrary loads. The verification was conducted not only by a material-based comparative study involving experimental investigations, but also by a structural application to the LNG membrane of a Mark-III-type cargo containment system.

In this investigation, a set of seismic fragility curves for RC bridges in Korea is derived by considering variations of the representative analytical model. The dimensions and specifications of the model are determined, based on statistical analysis of the inventory of RC bridges in Korea. Variations of important modeling parameters such as material properties, size of structural members, and dimension of the bridge are defined based on statistical studies of the bridges. The OpenSees program is utilized for the analysis to represent the inelastic behavior of RC members. A systematic approach is developed to perform a large volume of inelastic dynamic analysis, in which continuous variation of the modeling parameters are programmed to appropriately represent the characteristics of RC bridges in Korea.
To achieve desired microstructure and mechanical property of a manufacturing product, heat treatment process is applied as a secondary process after forging. Especially, quenching process is used for improving strength, hardness, and wear resistance since phase transformation occurs owing to rapid heat transfer from the surface of the specimen. In the present paper, a study on surface temperature measurement for water quenching of eutectoid steel was investigated. In order to determine the temperature history in experiments, three different measuring schemes were used by varying installation techniques of K-type thermocouples. Depending on the measured temperature distribution at the surface of the specimen, convective heat transfer coefficients were numerically determined as a function of temperature by the inverse finite element analysis considering the latent heat generation due to phase transformation. Based on the inversely determined convective heat transfer coefficient, temperature, phase, and hardness distributions in the specimen after water quenching were numerically predicted. By comparing the experimental and computational hardness distribution at three different locations in the specimen, the best temperature measuring scheme was determined. This work clearly demonstrates the effect of temperature measurement on the final mechanical property in terms of hardness distribution.
It is well known that the quality and efficiency of the design of metal forming processes can be significantly improved with the aid of effective numerical simulations. In the present study, a two-and three-dimensional finite element simulation system, CAMP form, was developed for the analysis of metal forming processes in the PC environment. It is composed of a solver based on the thermo-rigid-viscoplastic approach and graphic user interface (GUI) based pre-and post-processors to be used for the effective description of forming conditions and graphic display of simulation results, respectively. In particular, in the case of CAMPform 2D (two-dimensional), as the solver contains an automatic remeshing module which determines the deformation step when remeshing is required and reconstructs the new mesh system, it is possible to carry out simulations automatically without any user intervention. Also, the forming analysis considers ductile fracture of the workpiece and wear of dies for better usage of the system. In the case of CAMPform 3D, general three-dimensional problems that involve complex die geometries and require remeshing can be analyzed, but full automation of simulations has yet to be achieved. In this paper, the overall structure and computational background of CAMPform will be briefly explained and analysis results of several forming processes will be shown. From the current results, it is construed that CAMPform can be used in providing useful information to assist the design of forming processes.
