  • An experimental study was peformed to investigate characteristics of an inverter driven heat pump system with a variation of compressor frequency and expansion device. The compressor frequency varied from 30Hz to 75Hz, and the performance of the system ap-plying three different expansion devices such as capillary tube, thermostatic expansion valve(TXV), and electronic expansion valve (EEV) was measured. The load conditions were altered by varying the temperatures of the secondary fluid entering condenser and evaporator with a constant flow rate. When the test condition was deviated from the standard value(rated value), TXV and EEV showed better performance than capillary tube due to optimal control of mass flow rate and superheat. In the present study, it was observed that the variable area expansion device had better performance than constant area expansion device in the inverter heat pump system due to active control of flow area with a change of com-pressor frequency and load conditions.

  • A system heat pump provides the benefits of comfort, energy conservation and easy maintenance. Recently, the system heat pump has been employed in small and medium-sized buildings. However, the performance data and control algorithm for system heat pump are limited in literature due to complicated system parameters and operating conditions. In the present study, the performance of a system heat pump with two indoor unit is measured by varying indoor loads, EEV opening, and compressor speed. In addition, the integral optimum regulator which includes MIMO control algorithm is proposed. The capacity modulation and optimum capacity for each indoor unit can be adjusted by utilizing the EEVs opening and compressor speed. The proposed scheme shows appropriate control performance at test conditions.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the performance of a two-stage compression heat pump system for district heating. The experimental setup of heat pump consists of compressor, condenser, evaporator, expansion device, intercooler, flash tank, oil separator and accumulator. The experimental evaluations on the two-stage compression cycle were carried out under various operating conditions which were heat source temperature, the degree of compressor inlet superheat, and intermediate pressure. The temperature ranges of unutilized energy as the heat source were used in the test conditions. As the heat source temperature increased from $10^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$, the COP and heating capacity of the heat pump system increased by 22.6% and 45.8%, respectively. The performance of the two-stage heat pump system increased by 5.2% with the variation of the intermediate pressure in the same heat source temperature conditions.

  • A preliminary performance test of a 30RT 2-stage screw heat pump was carried out in order to develop a high performance large-scale unutilized energy source heat pump, which will be used in district heating and cooling. Two issues on the system control were investigated in this study, A stable 2-stage heating operation is guaranteed only if the load-side water inlet temperature is over a certain value, to where the 1-stage heating operation should be done first from a cold start. An oil shortage problem in low stage compressor, which depends on the degree of suction superheat, was solved by the proper oil level control scheme.

  • This study carried out a numerical analysis on a heat pump assisted dryer using HFC134a. Under the constant degree of superheat and that of subcooling, we analyzed the performance of heat pump assisted dryer with varying an air mass velocity, bypass air ratio, compressor speed and an inlet bulb temperature of dryer. Simulation results were compared with experimental results, so they were maximally agreed in the range of 10%. There was the proper bypass air ratio with varying an air mass velocity. As for the effect of SMER having the inlet temperature $35^{\circ}C$ and compressor speed 1360rpm, bypass air ratio was 30% at the front velocity 0.5kg/s, 40% at the front velocity 0.7kg/s and 50% at the front velocity 0.9kg/s and 1.1kg/s. As the compressor speed was increased, SMER decreased and COP increased. As the inlet bulb temperature was increased, SMER and COP decreased.

  • The ambient temperature of the experimental conditions changes by varying the speed of the compressor and the electronic expansion valve opening. The effects of changing valve opening to the entire system has been investigated. The results show that the ambient temperatures of $35^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$ controlled at 30Hz must be avoided. The capacity control range of the control compressor with changing speed is about 43~100% at $35^{\circ}C$, 43~100% at $25^{\circ}C$ and 48~100% at $10^{\circ}C$, respectively. The results show the capacity control range decreases with decreasing ambient temperature.

  • The previous study was conducted to develop an air source multi heat pump system that could be operated with the solar collector and air source heat exchangers as heat source of the system. There is a winter-sowing problems in air source multi heat pump system when the outdoor temperature goes down under freezing point. The winter-sowing problem was solved by adapting R-22 refrigerant as working fluid in the previous study. However, when the system operated at high temperature, another problems are come out such as overheating of the solar collector outlet which lead to the superheat of the compressor inlet of the heat pump system. The condition could deteriorates a compressor in some case. In this study, we installed the anti-superheating devices on the previously developed system. As results of system performance test, COP of the system with anti-superheating technique is 2.4. It is a little improved COP compare to previous study's 2.23. In the results of multi heat source heating system, during operating solar collector, COP is relatively high between $200\;W/m^2$ and $400\;W/m^2$ solar intensity. It is recommended to extend the study on performance optimization with balancing the solar collect and capacity of compressor at higher solar irradiation conditions.

  • Typical temperature control methods of a cooler for machine tools are hot-gas bypass and compressor variable speed control. The hot-gas bypass system has been widely used to control the cooler temperature in many general industrial fields. On the contrary, the compressor variable speed control is focused on special fields such as aerospace and high precision machine tools which need high precision control. The variable speed control system usually has two control variables such as target temperature and superheat. In other words, the variable speed control system is basically multi-input multi-output(MIMO) system. In spite of MIMO system, the proportional integral derivative(PID) feedback control methodology that based on single-input single-output (SISO) system is generally used for designing the variable speed control system. Therefore, it is inevitable to describe transfer functions for dynamic behaviors of every controlled variables and decide the PID gains with tremendous iteration process. Moreover, the designed PID gains do not provide optimum system performances. To solve these problems, high performance controller design method based on a state space model is suggested in this paper. An optimum controller is designed to minimize both control errors and energy inputs. This method was more simple to describe dynamic behaviors and easier to design the cooler controller which is MIMO system.

  • This study analyzed facts affecting the performance of refrigeration systems after throttling actions, by changing the amount of refrigerant according to adjusting the opening of manual expansion valve to 80%, or 20% with vapor compressional refrigeration training equipment. At opening of 20%, the inlet and outlet temperature of compressor, subcooling and superheat, condenser heat, refrigeration effect, flash gas heat, coefficient of performance were higher, while at 80%, condensing pressure, evaporating pressure, compression work were higher, Thus, we could see changes in the amount of refrigerant affect the performance of the refrigeration system.
