  • To study the effect of functional water on the compressive strength of mortar, city water was changed to functional water through ceramics treatment. The change of characteristics of water was measured with $O^{17}$ NMR and Killian Camera. The compressive strength of mortar was measured with various curing conditions. The test results show that by the ceramics treatment the characteristics of city water was changed. At 28 days under curing condition, the compressive strength of mortar which was mix-proportioned with treated water was increased about 22 % than that of mortar which was mix-proportioned with untreated city water.

  • Evolutionary algorithms based on conventional statistical methods such as regression and classification have been widely used in data mining applications. This work involves application of gene expression programming (GEP) for predicting compressive strength of fly ash geopolymer concrete, which is gaining increasing interest as an environmentally friendly alternative of Portland cement concrete. Based on 56 test results from the existing literature, a model was obtained relating the compressive strength of fly ash geopolymer concrete with the significantly influencing mix design parameters. The predictions of the model in training and validation were evaluated. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$), mean (${\mu}$) and standard deviation (${\sigma}$) were 0.89, 1.0 and 0.12 respectively, for the training set, and 0.89, 0.99 and 0.13 respectively, for the validation set. The error of prediction by the model was also evaluated and found to be very low. This indicates that the predictions of GEP model are in close agreement with the experimental results suggesting this as a promising method for compressive strength prediction of fly ash geopolymer concrete.

  • In this study, the compressive strength development was analyzed at early ages of concrete specimens admixed with non-sintered hwangto to reduce the CO2 emissions generated during cement production. The W/B of the specimens was set at 0.41, the percentage of non-sintered hwangto admixture was set at three levels of 15, 30, and 45%, and the compressive strength were measured at 1, 3, 7, and 28 days. The results showed that the compressive strength decreases as the percentage of non-sintered hwangto increases, but the strength development rate increases, and the NHTC41-15 test specimen developed a compressive strength close to NC41 at 28 days.

  • Metakaolin is a cementitious material for producing high-strength concrete. This material is now used as substitute for silica-fume. In this paper, we tested the compressive strength of concrete according to the substitute ratio of metakaolin, silica-fume. And we did the durability test such as chloride ion diffusion and chemical attack. In the compressive strength test, the result shows that $10\%$ substitute of metakaolin & silica-fume for binder is optimum. In the chloride ion diffusion test, according to the increase of substitute of metakaolin & silica-fume for binder, the diffusion coefficient is more reduced. And in the chemical attack test, according to the increase of substitute, the resistance is more excellent. In the durability test, we recognized that metakaolin is able to used as a substitute for silica-fume.

  • Creep behaviors of Cr3C2 composites containing 90 wt% Cr3C2 and 10 wt% Ni were studied at high temperature. Compression tests at 100$0^{\circ}C$ and bending tests at 100$0^{\circ}C$ and 105$0^{\circ}C$ were done in argon environment. In all test conditions primary and steady-state creep behaviors were observed. Stress exponent and activatiion energy were determined from the experimental data. By microstructural analysis of Cr3C2 composites after creep test, the separate agglomerations of Ni phase were observed. Numerical analysis was also studied to analyze bending creep behaviors of Cr3C2 by assumming different tensile and compressive creep behavior in a bending sample. From the analysis, it was found that the stress state at the compressive region as applied stress increased. The observed creep rates were compared with the predicted creep rates by estimating power-law creep parameters from bending test data.

  • FRP confining is a widely used method for seismic retrofitting of concrete columns. Several studies investigated the stress-strain behavior of FRP confined concrete prisms with square and rectangular sections both experimentally and analytically. In some studies, the monotonic stress-strain behavior of confined concrete was investigated and compressive strength models were developed. To study the reliability of these models, thorough statistical tests are required. This paper aims to investigate the reliability of the presented models using statistical tests including t-test, wilcoxon rank sum test, wilcoxon signed rank test and sign test with a level of significance of 5%. Wilk Shapiro test was also employed to evaluate the normality of the data distribution. The results were compared for different cross section and confinement types. To see the accuracy of the models when there were no significant differences between the results, the coefficient of confidence was used.

  • This study investigates the feasibility of adopting the results of the UC (unconfined compression) test to assess the total cohesion of the unsaturated soil. A series of laboratory tests were conducted on samples of unsaturated lateritic soils of northern Taiwan. Specifically, the unconfined compression test was combined with the pressure plate test to obtain the unconfined compression strength and its matric suction of the samples. Soil samples were first compacted at designated water content and then subjected to the wetting process for saturation and the subsequent drying process to its target suction using the apparatus developed by the authors. The correlations among the matric suction, the unconfined compression strength and the total cohesion were studied. As a result, a simplified method to estimate the total cohesion using the unconfined compressive strength is suggested. The calculated results compare reasonably with the unsaturated triaxial test results. Current results show good performance; however, further study is warranted.

  • This paper discusses an experimental programme that was carried out to study the effects of specimen size-shape and type of moulds on the compressive strength of concrete. For this purpose, cube specimens with 150 mm dimensions, cylinder specimens with $150{\times}300mm$ dimensions, and prism specimens with $150{\times}150{\times}375mm$ dimensions were prepared. The experimental programme was carried out with several concrete compositions belonging to strength classes C20/25, C25/30, C30/37, C40/50 and C60/75. Furthermore, the test results were curve-fitted using the least squares method to obtain the new parameters for the modified size effect law.

  • This paper investigates the compressive fatigue behaviour of polypropylene fibre reinforced self compacting concrete with Granite Sawing Waste (GSW). An experimental programme was conducted to obtain the fatigue lives of fibre reinforced self compacting concrete (FRSCC) at various stress levels. The stress ratio was kept constant as 0.3. Compressive fatigue test was conducted on 60 cubic specimens with 100mm edge length and 0.1% of polypropylene fibres at a frequency of 0.05Hz. The test results indicate that the fatigue lives of concretes containing granite sawing waste follow the double-parameter Weibull distribution. The fatigue strength equations have been developed based on different probabilities of failure.
