Column specimens were constructed with main parameters significantly affecting the strength of the compression lap splice, such as lap length, spacing of lapped bars, amount and location of transverse reinforcements, and concrete strength. An experimental study has been conducted with column specimens in concrete strength of 40 to 60 MPa. Diameters of lapped reinforcing bars are 22 mm. An axial load was monotonically applied to the column specimens. All specimens failed in a brittle sudden manner and cover concrete was blasted out at maximum load. Compression lap splice strengths of specimens were evaluated from strains measured at the beginning of the lap length. Effects of the main parameters on the strengths of compression lap splice are assessed. Similarly to strengths of tension lap slice, the compression splice strength is found to be affected by lap length, spacing of lapped bars, transverse reinforcements.

The effects of polymer-cement ratio on strength properties of ultrarapid-hardening acrylic-modified concretes. As a result, the flexural and tensile strengths of ultrarapid-hardening acrylic-modified concretes increase with increasing of polymer-cement ratio. In particular, the acrylic-modified concretes with a polymer-cement ratio of 20% provide approximately 1.5 times higher flexural and tensile strengths than unmodified concretes. Such high strength development is attributed to the high flexrul and tensile strengths of arcylic polymer and the improved bond between cement hydrates and aggregates because of the addition of acrylic polymer. However, the compressive strengths of ultrarapid-hardening acrylic-modified concretes decrease with increasing of polymer-cement ratio.

Ultra rapid-hardening cement is widely used for latex-modified mortar and concrete as repair and finishing material during urgent work. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the improvements in strength made to SBR cement mortars by the adding of various admixtures and by the use of different curing methods. SBR cement mortar was prepared with various polymer-cement ratios, curing conditions and admixture contents, and tested for flow, flexural and compressive strengths. From the test results, it was determined that the flow of SBR cement mortar increased with an increase in the polymer-cement ratio, and the water reducing ratio also increased. The strength of cement mortar is improved by using SBR emulsion, and is strengthened by adding metakaoline. The strength of SBR cement mortar cured in standard conditions was increased with an increase in the polymer-cement ratio, and attained the maximum strengths at polymer-cement ratios of 15 % and 10 %, respectively. The maximum strengths of SBR cement mortar are about 1.8 and 1.3 times the strengths of plain mortar, respectively. In this study, it is confirmed that the polymer-cement ratio and curing method are important factors for improving the strengths of rapid-hardening SBR cement mortar.
Making use of SN steel in the building structure should be a prerequisite to adopt the design strength of said steel. As a preceding study, the material properties of STKN400B/490B tubes and SPAP235/325 and SPAR295 square pipes manufactured using SN400B/490B plates were evaluated. Compared with the yield and ultimate strengths of SN400B/490B plates, those of STKN400B/490B tubes increase. Nonetheless, the yield and ultimate strengths of STKN400B/490B tubes satisfied the design codes of STKN400B/490B tubes even though the tubes were fabricated via roll bending or press forming. On the other hand, the yield and ultimate strengths at the edges of SPAP235/325 square pipes did not satisfy the design codes based on the values at the sides. The maximum tensile and compressive residual stresses at the SN490B tube were equal to and 40% of the yield strength of the SN490B plate, respectively, In the case of the SPAP325 square pipe, both the maximum tensile and compressive residual stresses were 80% of the yield strength of the SN490B plate. The axial compressive loaded column test results snowed that the buckling strengths were not very different regardless of the mode of fabrication of STKN490B tunes. i.e., through roll bending or press forming. On the other hand, the buckling strength of the SPAP325 square pipe was higher than that of the built-up square pipe.

In this paper, the effect of compression levels on the strengths of porous concrete using bottom ash aggregates was analyzed. Coal bottom ash (CBA) was used as aggregate in porous concrete in this study. The aggregate size types used in the CBA concrete mixtures were catagorized into two different ones. One included only a single aggregate particle size and the other included hybrid aggregate particles mixed at a ratio of 8:2 volume proportion. The water-binder ratio was fixed at 0.30, and the compression levels were applied at 0.5, 1.5, and 3.0 MPa valu es to fabricate a porou s concrete specimen. The total porosity, compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural tensile strengths were tested and analyzed. When the compression level increased, the total porosity decreased, meanwhile the compressive, split tensile, and flexural tensile strengths increased. The total porosity of concrete using hybrid aggregate was lower and the strength was larger than those of concrete using single-type aggregate. Finally, the correlation between the total porosity, compressive, split tensile, and flexural tensile strengths of porous concrete were presented. The total porosity and strength characteristics showed an inversely proportional correlation.
Fire is one of the most destructive powers to which a building structure can be subjected, often exposing concrete elements to elevated temperatures. The relative properties of concrete after such an exposure are of significant importance in terms of the serviceability of buildings. Unraveling the heating history of concrete and different cooling regimes is important for forensic research or to determine whether a fire-exposed concrete structure and its components are still structurally sound or not. Assessment of fire-damaged concrete structures usually starts with visual observation of colour change, cracking and spalling. Thus, it is important to know the effect of elevated temperatures on strength retention properties of concrete. This study reports the effect of elevated temperature on the mechanical properties of the concrete specimen with polypropylene fibres and cooled differently under various regimes. In the heating cycle, the specimen were subjected to elevated temperatures ranging from $200^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$, in steps of $200^{\circ}C$ with a retention period of 1 hour. Then they were cooled to room temperature differently. The cooling regimes studied include, furnace cooling, air cooling and sudden cooling. After exposure to elevated temperatures and cooled differently, the weight loss, residual compressive and split tensile strengths retention characteristics were studied. Test results indicated that weight and both compressive and tensile strengths significantly reduce, with an increase in temperature and are strongly dependent on cooling regimes adopted.

Fly ashes mixed with clay as 70:30 weight percent were sintered by microwave energy and a 2.45 Ghz kitchen model microwave oven was used. Samples were sintered at $1,150^{\circ}C$ and kept at that temperature up to 50 minutes by 10 minutes intervals. Microstructures were taken by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (EDS) analysis of a raw fly ash was taken. X-ray diffraction analysis was done, and compressive strengths and apparent densities were measured. Pore sizes of the samples became smaller as time passed by, but compressive strengths and apparent densities did not change much. Numerical analysis on the microwave heated system was carried out in order to figure out heat transfer phenomena in the cavity.

This paper discusses a study of cement mortar reinforced with Graphene Oxide (GO) flakes carried out at the University of Plymouth. Over 60 specimens were prepared and tested to obtain the tensile, compressive and flexural strengths of cement mortar with/without 0.5% GO flakes by weight of cement. The dispersion of the GO flakes and the effect of the use of polycarboxylate ether superplasticizer (0.2% by weight of cement) on the material strength are discussed. Images of the particle sizes of GO are presented from the transmission electron microscopy analysis. In addition, the images from the field emission scanning electron microscope analysis are also presented to show the difference of the microscopic structure of cement mortar with/without GO. The results of the strength tests are presented. It is shown that the inclusion of the GO flakes in general led to positive results, which suggest that GO improved the tensile, compressive and flexural strengths of cement mortar.

Recently, the pile driving or blasting works are increasingly done in many areas to perform large scale construction projects. The vibrations from these blasting works may affect the properties of concrete, especially young concrete. The purpose of present study is to explore the effects of vibration at early ages on the properties of concrete. To this end, comprehensive experimental study is conducted in the present study. The major test variables are peak particle velocity or vibration velocity and the age at vibration. The compressive strengths and bond strengths are measured for all the specimens at 28days after casting. The duration of vibration is fixed to 30 minutes for all cases. The results indicate that the strength increases for vibration velocity less than about 0.25cm/sec and decreases for vibration velocity larger than 0.5cm/sec. The effect of age at vibration is not pronounced and shows almost similar behavior for the age at vibration of 0 to 12 hours range. The present study provides some important guidelines to control the construction or vehicle vibrations for the concrete at very early ages.
I n this paper, an experimental research was carried out to investigate the confinement effect
of spiral reinforcements in concrete column specimens subjected to t.he concentric axial corn
pressive loads. Main variables were the compressive strengths of concrete of 27.2, 62.4 and 81.2
MPa, and the spacings of spirals of 120, 60, 40, 30, 25 and 20mm. and the yield strengths of spir
als of 451 and 1375MPa, respectively. For the same volumetric ratio and yield strength of spir
als, it was shown that the strength increment of confined concrete was almost same regardless
of the strength of unconfined concrete, however, the axial stram at maximum stress was decreas
ed with increasing of the compressive strength of unconfined concrete.
