In this paper, the influence of axial compression ratio on the mechanical properties of new type joints of side span of rectangular concrete-filled steel tubular column-H-type steel beam is studied. Two new types of side-span joints of rectangular concrete-filled steel tubular column-H-type steel beam are designed and quasi-static tests of five new type joints with 1:2 scale reduction ratios are performed. The axial compression ratio of joint JD1 is 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5, and the axial compression ratio of joint JD2 is 0.3 and 0.5. In the joint test, different axial forces were applied to the top of the column according to different axial compression ratios, and low-cyclic reciprocating load was applied on the beam. The stress and strain distribution, beam and column deformation, limit state, failure process, failure mechanism, stiffness degradation, ductile deformation and energy dissipation capacity of the joint were measured and analyzed. The results show that: with the increase of axial compression ratio, the ultimate bearing capacity of the joint decreases slightly, the plastic deformation decreases, and the stiffness and ductility decrease. According to the energy dissipation curve of the specimen, the equivalent damping coefficient also increases with the increase of axial compression ratio in a certain range, indicating that the increase of axial compression ratio can improve the seismic performance of the joint to a certain extent. The finite element method is used to simulate the joint test, and the test results are in good agreement with the simulation results.

It is important to eliminate thermal bridge for achieving passive and environmental-friendly buildings. Structural members may frequently act as thermal bridges that become a conduit of energy. it is emphasized that thermal bridge breaker (TBB) system is necessary for blocking thermal bridge of the structural members. This TBB system has to maintain a performance to tensile and compressive stress which arises in member section in order to being realized structurally. Thus, it is composed with anchorage devices which obtain continuity with structural members inside building and rebar of cantilever balcony, and compression joint which resist compression stress occurring to TBB. Applying method of TBB's compression joint is designed to have high strength with comparatively small element section which can cover external load. This study carried out finite elements method based on compression experiment. Throughout the FEM analysis, this study provides information on finding optimal shape for compression joint of TBB which can suitably apply to current building balcony of Korea.
A single layer latticed dome is one of the most efficient structures because of its low specivic gravity. For easily analyzing of a single layer latticed dome, joint system is assumed to be pin or rigid joint. However, its joint uses ball whose system has intermediate properties of pin and rigid joint. Therefore this study has a grasp of bending rigidity, stress and mechanical properties through experimental and analyzing method of the bolt inserted ball joint. To analyze the stress of bolt and sleeve, this study uses through 3D elastic contact and cubic element, and then the ball and the bolt are perfectly connected for easily analyzing Compared experimental results to F.E.M, each specimen has an error of less than 12 percent. In the results of stress distribution through F.E.M, stress occurs from bottom of bolt to top of sleeve, and most of tension appears on the bolt, also compression occurs from upper parts of the bolt to the sleeve. The assumption of bending stiffness in ball joint is well known that bolt resists only tension and upper sleeve resiss compression. The results of experiment and analysis have $7{\sim}56%$ error, assuring that upper part of bolt occurs of partial compression. In the result of modified assumption have $4{\sim}20%$ error.
This paper investigated computationally and experimentally the interaction here between a notch as well as a micropore under uniaxial compression. Brazilian tensile strength, uniaxial tensile strength, as well as biaxial tensile strength are used to calibrate PFC2d at first. Then, uniaxial compression test was conducted which they included internal notch and micro pore. Experimental and numerical building of 9 models including notch and micro pore were conducted. Model dimensions of models are 10 cm × 10 cm × 5 cm. Joint length was 2 cm. Joints angles were 30°, 45° and 60°. The position of micro pore for all joint angles was 2cm upper than top of the joint, 2 cm upper than middle of joint and 2 cm upper than the joint lower tip, discreetly. The numerical model's dimensions were 5.4 cm × 10.8 cm. The fractures were 2 cm in length and had angularities of 30, 45, and 60 degrees. The pore had a diameter of 1 cm and was located at the top of the notch, 2 cm above the top, 2 cm above the middle, and 2 cm above the bottom tip of the joint. The uniaxial compression strength of the model material was 10 MPa. The local damping ratio was 0.7. At 0.016 mm per second, it loaded. The results show that failure pattern affects uniaxial compressive strength whereas notch orientation and pore condition impact failure pattern. From the notch tips, a two-wing fracture spreads almost parallel to the usual load until it unites with the sample edge. Additionally, two wing fractures start at the hole. Both of these cracks join the sample edge and one of them joins the notch. The number of wing cracks increased as the joint angle rose. There aren't many AE effects in the early phases of loading, but they quickly build up until the applied stress reaches its maximum. Each stress decrease was also followed by several AE effects. By raising the joint angularities from 30° to 60°, uniaxial strength was reduced. The failure strengths in both the numerical simulation and the actual test are quite similar.

SAR radar and FLIR images, which are taken from sensors on aircrafts or satellites, are compressed prior to transmission to facilitate rapid transfer through the limited bandwidth channels. In this case, it is important that it achieves compression ratio as high as possible as well as high target detection rate. In this paper a joint ATR-compression system based on the subband coding and VQ is proposed, which utilizes the encoder as a predictor or classifier for target detection. Simulation result shows that the proposed system achieves a relatively high level of target detection performance as well as a high compression ratio over 200:1.
A real-time joint transform correlator by using JPEG-compressed reference images is proposed as practical solution to storage problem and improvement of processing time of automatic target recognition system [1]. Effects of compression on recognition performance of join transform correlator are quantitatively investigated under situations where the target is suffered from noise and has contrast difference with respect to the reference. Two images with different spatial-frequency contents and contrast were used as the test scenes. The simulation results show that, the recognition performance of joint transform correlator by using the compressed reference images with high spatial-frequency components is more sensitive to noise and contrast difference than the low spatial-frequency image.

Biaxial compression test was conducted on a transversely isotropic synthetic jointed rock model for the understanding of the fracture behaviors of a sedimentary or metamorphic rocks with well developed bedding or foliation in uni-direction. The joint angles employed for the model are 30, 45, and 60 degrees to the horizontal, and the synthetic rock mass was made of early strength cement. From the biaxial compression test, initiation propagation of tensile cracks at norm to the joint angle was found. The propagated tensile cracks eventually developed rock blocks, which was dislodged from the rock mass. Furthermore, the propagation process of the tensile cracks varies with joint angle: lower joint angle model shows more stable and progressive tensile crack propagation. The experiment results were validated from the simulation by using discrete element method PFC 2D. From the simulation, as has been observed from the test, a rock mass with lower joint angle produces wider damage region and rock block by tensile cracks. In addition, a rock model with lower joint angle shows a progressive tensile cracks generation around the opening from the investigation of the interacted tensile cracks.
It is general knowledge that knee joint pain can be attributed to trauma and degenerative change around the knee joint. However most patients who have suffered from pain or limited range of motion of the knee joint show no definite pathology on X-ray or laboratory examination. We examined 242 patients with knee joint pain and found compression or entrapment of the articular nerve fiber by the tissue around the knee joint resulted in pain in almost all cases. Conclusion: by relieving the compression of the articular nerve fiber with just physical therapy and LASER stimulation on the identified trigger points, in conjunction with NSAIDs, muscle relaxants, were found to be very effective in the treatment of knee joint pain.
To investigate the stress-strain relation of PVC-FRP Confined Concrete (PFCC) column with RC ring beam joint subjected to eccentric compression, the experiment of 13 joint specimens, which were designed with principle of "strong joint and weak column", were presented. Several variable parameters, such as reinforcement ratio, width and height of ring beam, FRP strips spacing and eccentricity, were considered. The specimens were eventually damaged by the crushing of concrete, the fracture of PVC tube and several FRP strips. With the FRP strips spacing or eccentricity increased, the ultimate carrying capacity of specimens declined. The strain of FRP strips and axial strain of PVC tube decreased as FRP strips spacing decreased. The decrease of eccentricity would slow down the development of strain of FRP strips and axial strain of PVC tube. The slope of stress-strain curve of PFCC column decreased as FRP strips spacing or eccentricity increased. The ultimate strain of PFCC column reduced as FRP strips spacing increased, while the effect of eccentricity on the ultimate strain of PFCC was not distinct. Considering the influence of eccentricity on the stress-strain relation, a modified stress-strain model for conveniently predicting the weak PFCC column and strong RC ring beam joint under eccentric compression was proposed and it was in good agreement with the experimental data.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the degree of discomfort and to identify factors related with discomfort in patients wearing thigh-length compression stockings after orthopedic surgery. Methods: The participants were 105 patients wearing thigh-length compression stockings after orthopedic surgery at two hospitals in B city. Data were collected by the scale of discomfort in wearing compression stockings from July 5 to October 20, 2011. Results: Mean score of discomfort on wearing compression stockings was significantly higher at post-op. day 3 than day 1 (t=-2.30, p=.004). Discomfort scores for 'itching skin' and 'tightened leg' items were higher than others. There was significant difference in discomfort at post-op. day 1 according to surgical regions. The total score of discomfort at post-op. day 3 was positively related with the body mass index (r=.20, p=.041). Conclusion: Wearing thigh-length compression stockings to prevent deep vein thrombosis may cause physical and psychological discomfort for orthopedic surgical patients. To reduce discomfort in wearing compression stockings, nurses need to intervene discomfort and problems related to the stockings post-operatively.
