  • The exhaust emission characteristics of a liquefied petroleum gas-di-methyl ether (LPG-DME) compression ignition engine was investigated under homogeneous charge, stratified charge and diffusion combustion conditions. LPG was used as the main fuel and injected into the combustion chamber directly. DME was used as an ignition promoter and injected into the intake port. Different LPG injection timings were tested to verify the combustion characteristics of the LPG-DME compression ignition engine. The combustion was divided into three region which are homogeneous charge, stratified charge, and diffusion combustion region according to the injection timing of LPG. The HC emission was reduced with LPG stratification. However, the carbon monoxide and particulate matter emissions were increased. The ignition timing was advanced with LPG stratification. This advance combustion was because of charge temperature and cetane number stratification with LPG.

  • The HCCI engines have been known with high efficiency and low pollution and can be actualized as the new internal combustion engines. However, As for(??) the ignition and combustion depend strongly on the oxidation reaction of the fuel, so it is difficult to control auto-ignition timing and combustion duration. Purpose of this paper is creating the database for development of multi-dimensional simulation and investigating the influence of different molecular structure. In this research, the effect of n-heptane mole ratio in fuel (XnH) on the ignition delay from homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) has been investigated experimentally. By varying the XnH, it was possible to ascertain whether or not XnH is the main resource of ignition delay. Additionally, the information on equivalence ratio for varying XnH was obtained. The tests were performed on a RCM (Rapid Compression Machine) fueled with n-heptane and iso-octane. The results showed that decreasing XnH (100, 30, 20, 10,0), the ignition delays of low temperature reaction (tL) and high temperature reaction (tH) is longer. And the temperature of reaction increases by about 30K. n-heptane partial equivalence ratio (fnH) affect on tL.and TL. When ${\phi}$nH was increased as a certain value, tL was decreased and TL was increased.

LPG was used as the main fuel and injected into the combustion chamber directly. DME was used as an ignition promoter and injected into the intake port. Different LPG injection timings were tested to verify the combustion characteristics of the LPG-DME compression ignition engine. The combustion was divided into three region which are homogeneous charge, stratified charge, and diffusion flame region according to the injection timing of LPG. The hydrocarbon emission of stratified charge combustion was lower than that of homogeneous charge combustion. However, the carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emission of stratified charge combustion were slightly higher than those of the homogeneous charge region. The indicated mean effective pressure was reduced at stratified charge region, while it was almost same level as the homogeneous charge combustion region at diffusion combustion region. The start of combustion timing of the stratified charge combustion and diffusion combustion region were advanced compared to the homogeneous charge combustion. It attributed to the higher cetane number and mixture temperature distribution which locally stratified. However, the knock intensity was varied as the homogeneity of charge was increased.

  • As a new concept in engines and a power source for future automotive applications, the HCCI(Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) engine has been introduced. Essentially a combination of spark ignition and compression ignition engines, the HCCI engine exhibits low NO$_x$ and PM emissions as well as high efficiency under part load. In this research, a 4 cylinder diesel engine was converted into a HCCI engine, and propane was used as the fuel. The main parameters for this research are fuel flow rate and the temperature of the intake manifold, and the effects of such on a HCCI engine's performance and exhaust was investigated.

Essentially a combination of spark ignition and compression ignition engines, the HCCI engine exhibits low NOx and Particulate Matter (PM) emissions as well as high efficiency under part load. The objective of this research is to determine the effects of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) rate on the combustion processes of HCCI. For this purpose, a 4-cylinder, compression ignition engine was converted into a HCCI engine, and a heating device was installed to raise the temperature of the intake air and also to make it more consistent. In addition, a pressure sensor was inserted into each of the cylinders to investigate the differences in characteristics among the cylinders.

  • This study presents both experimental and numerical investigation of ignition characteristics of n-heptane and n-butanol mixture. The $O_2$ concentration was fixed to 9-10% to make high exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) rate condition. Experiments were performed using a rapid compression machine. In addition, a numerical study of the ignition delay time was performed using CHEMKIN codes to validate experimental results and predict chemical species after combustion process. The results showed that the ignition delay time increased with increasing n-butanol ratio and the reactivity decreased by low $O_2$ concentration.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a new method to determine a combustion phase (start of combustion and end of combustion) using a combustion pressure data. Unlike previous research method that used heat release amount, the difference between the combustion pressure measured in the combustion chamber and the motoring pressure was used to determine the combustion phase. This research was conducted using a single-cylinder diesel engine with a compression ratio of 17.7. The test was conducted under various injection timing. The newly proposed method showed high accuracy in combustion mode with early injection, as well as the conventional combustion mode. It is expected that this method will be used to study new combustion strategies such as HCCI (homogeneous charge compression ignition) and RCCI (reactivity controlled compression ignition) that are applying early injection strategies as well as existing combustion modes.

  • HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) combustion has a great advantage in reducing NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) and PM (Particulate Matter) by lowering the combustion temperature due to spontaneous ignitions at multiple sites in a very lean combustible mixture. However, it is difficult to make a diesel-fuelled HCCI possible because of a poor vaporability of the fuel. To resolve this problem, the two-stage injection strategy was introduced to promote the ignition of the extremely early injected fuel. The compression ratio and air-fuel ratio were found to affect not only the ignition, but also control the combustion phase without a need for the intake-heating or EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation). The ignition timing could be controlled even at a higher compression ratio with increased IMEP (Indicated Mean Effective Pressure). The NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) emission level could be reduced by more than 90 % compared with that in a conventional DI (Direct Injection) diesel combustion mode, but the increase of PM and HC (Hydrocarbon) emissions due to over-penetration of spray still needs to be resolved.
